He'll play next week regardless because even if he misses the cut, he'll still have a high enough ranking.

Better long term to keep playing and get more points.

Even through 9 today (played the back first), but nothing even about his round so far (4 pars, 3 birds, 1 bogey and a double).
-1 overall, projected cut is currently E.

According to the pgatour.com, he'd rank somewhere around 105 in FedEx points if he misses the cut this week. That would not get him into Boston.

Six birdies through 16 holes, and he's 1 under for the round. Crazy ride for Jason today.

PMI
08-23-2013, 03:51 PM
Crazy ride is right. These last couple days have been a roller coaster. He's simply not hitting fairways. It's very, very difficult to score on the Tour when you keep driving into deep stuff and bunkers.

GoMuskies
08-23-2013, 04:36 PM
That's a wild 2 under. T24th at the moment and obviously making the cut. He's now all but assured of playing in Boston next week, too.

His card looks like a bag of Skittles; made only 7 pars, lost 1.5 strokes to the field in putting, hits 13 greens and moved up the board. Really could have gone low and let it slip away. Still in good position to play well for the weekend.

GoMuskies

Nice start today. 2 birdies in the first 8 holes. Tied for 16th at 5 under. He's got a great shot at this point to move way up in the FedEx Cup standings and put himself in good position to qualify for the BMW.

Now 25th.

Double eagle on the par 4 3rd hole according to pgatour.com. He's 3 under through 7 today and 7 under overall. Tied for 6th at the moment.

GoMuskies

Meant eagle, not double eagle. He didn't get a hole in 1 on a par 4.

I think that double bogey on 17 yesterday pissed him off.

PMI
08-25-2013, 03:00 PM
Yea he holed out from the fairway. Amazing to think that if he could've avoided a couple of those bogeys, he'd be right there. Of course, I expect some of the later groups to get a little further into the red, but Jason has a chance to shoot up about 40 spots or so if he finishes strong. That would be HUGE.

GoMuskies
08-25-2013, 04:02 PM
In the clubhouse at -8. He'd move up to 49th in the FedEx Cup standings if the Tournament ended now.

Projected now to be 54 in the FedEx Cup. The way the final groups are throwing bogeys on their cards can only help. What are they thinking?

These playoff events are worth 5X the FedEx Cup points of a normal event. They are designed so that even the guy ranked #125 coming in has a shot at winning the title.

Barclays Leaderboard (http://www.xavierhoops.com/showthread.php?24116-Official-2013-Jason-Kokrak-thread&p=403072#post403072)

Not only does he move on to the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, that gives him a little breathing room for advancing to the BMW Championship (Top 75 needed)

Jason's been fine today (-1 through 15), but the story is obviously Mickelson. Clearly picking up where he left off in the final round last weekend. -8 through 12 holes, so he's got a shot to have one of the better rounds of all time. 28 on the front is just sick.

I can see making the points greater at the playoff events, but maybe 5X's is a bit much? I don't know.

Just trying to get my mind around it. Bob Estes is having a good round today so far. Projected to go from 86th to 10th in like 12 holes of golf. After almost a full season that seems a little off. Maybe it all comes out in the wash though.

If anything, I'd rather they keep it as is, but have fewer players qualify for the playoffs off the bat. I don't want to see them change the format enough to where ANY player who makes the playoffs has no shot at winning the FedEx Cup.

The "projections" are based solely if the player -and everyone else in that snapshot in time- remains in that same position throughout the tournament. Obviously that never happens.

In tournament "projections" are useless..and stupid.

On day one it's pretty meaningless, sure. But on days 3 and 4 I like seeing where Jason is going to move in the standings if he maintains his ground. It's also interesting (to me) if he birdies or bogies a hole how much that affects his potential place in the standings.

I don't think it's any more meaningless than noting that Jason is currently tied for 33rd in the Tournament. That has probably changed five spots since I started typing.

My point was based on Waggy's comment above about Estes 12 hole "movement" . Of course when you get to the back nine on Sunday, there is some significance, but at that point, it's almost real.

The BMW in two weeks is top 70, so he is good for that regardless of score today, is that correct?

Looks like Jason needs at least a 9th place finish this week to get into the top 30. Hell of a season for him. Over $1M in earnings. Playing in 3 of the 4 FedEx Cup tournaments. Wouldn't surprise me if he finally wins a tournament in the 2013-2014 season.

Jason had a pretty nice day today. He was +2 on his round when it was delayed yesterday and finished up the round -2 to end at even for the round and 1 over for the tournament. A respectable middle of the pack finish for Jason and an end to a very respectable sophomore season on Tour. Hopefully next year is the year he wins and gets to play in the Tour Championsip.

Jason shot 73 today to finish T41st. Bad finish for Jason.

Bigger news is that Tiger just walked off the course on the 13th hole. It will be interesting to see if the PGA has the balls to penalize him if there's not a legit reason for walking off. My guess is that a BS excuse will be made up by Tiger's team and immediately accepted by the Tour. It's also possible, of course, that he actually is hurt.

Sounds like the typical round for most of us hackers, except the birdie part. For me it is usually a couple pars that make up the bread of my crappy golf game sandwich. I haven't broken 100 at Valhalla yet but I would love to take another shot some time. That 18th hole is one of my favorites (that doesn't have an ocean behind it).

Yeah it is all over the place but they do a good job of getting people in quickly. Best place to stand I think is 12 tee box. Get to see the player's approach shot on 10 and their tee shot on 12. I pretty much just stay on the back 9 whenever I'm out there. No real need to get out to the front.

At least for me, seeing a golf tournament live is something that I can scratch off my bucket list because I have done it once, and don't really feel the need to ever do again unless it is maybe the Masters. To see it once live is pretty awesome though. Just to see these guys hit the ball so long and so straight is pretty amazing...and then have the precision to consistently hit GIR and within 10-15 feet on what seems like every time. However, for me, seeing it once (and in a major) is good enough for me. This is one sport I actually enjoy watching on tv more than I do live...just because you get to see multiple groups, you know the standings at all times, and the walk to get food/beer is a lot shorter at home.

At least for me, seeing a golf tournament live is something that I can scratch off my bucket list because I have done it once, and don't really feel the need to ever do again unless it is maybe the Masters. To see it once live is pretty awesome though. Yeah, I somehow lucked out and won 2 final round tickets for the Masters from the Masters lottery. Cannot wait to finally go in April. I just need a US Open and an Open Championship to have a lifetime attendance of the Grand Slam.

I've played Valhalla once. I birdied #1 and #18 (the relevant golf balls are sitting right next to me) and shot about 105. So I hit a bit of a rough patch during my round.

Well, clearly you were not using your "exclusive and special clubs" like you should have been.

The latest:

"Kokrak 'about 75 percent,' but will play PGA
Jason Kokrak fully intends to return to competition at next week's PGA Championship, Rotoworld has learned in an email from Kevin Canning of The Legacy Agency, Kokrak's management firm.
"Jason is playing next week," Canning wrote on Tuesday. "First week back. He hasn't walked 18 holes yet, but he has played a full round. He’s probably about 75 percent but he wasn't going to miss a major so we will see how it goes." Kokrak has been out of action since having surgery for a sport hernia. He last pegged it at THE PLAYERS where he missed the cut. Thanks to two top 10s and another six top 20s, he's still 73rd in the FedExCup standings. While he's perhaps not a wise fantasy investment at Valhalla, it's good news that he's far enough along in his recovery to give it a go."

Given the long layoff, I think it would be a minor miracle if Jason was able to make the cut this weekend, but I'll be cheering like hell for him.

Triple at the second for Jason. The good news is that he's tied with John Daly! That's also the bad news.

Projected cut is E, so Jason just needs to shoot 64 today. No big deal.

Jason is playing this week in the first round of the playoffs, by the way. So far, it looks like he may have his game back after the long layoff. He shot a one under 70 today in Paramus, NJ. One birdie and 17 pars.

It wouldn't be the first time that he's had success at the Barclays; he parlayed a Top-10 finish last year into the 3rd round of the playoffs (BMW Championship). At the moment, he's tied for 19th behind the leader (-5).

Hopefully Jason can keep it together today and at least make the cut. He's -2 overall (-1 for the day) through 8 holes. The cut line is at +1 right now.

Bogey on 11 and birdies on 12 and 17 (he started on the 10th hole).

The cut line has briefly dropped to +2, although I think Jason should make the cut as long as he doesn't have any disastrous holes to finish his round.

And Jason finishes his round even par and is still -1 overall. That will move him into weekend play.

It's great news that he made the cut. Hopefully a couple of nice rounds this weekend put him in good position to make the third round of the playoffs (he's basically sealed a trip to Boston).

Smooth 65 for Rory today. He doesn't suck.

Jason could never really get anything going this weekend. Finished +1 and will likely end up around 60th. He''ll need a very strong showing in Boston next weekend to jump into the top 70 in FedEx Cup points to advance to the third playoff weekend.

Great start for Jason at the OHL Classic, sitting at -5 and one stroke back after Round 1.

It's rough out there in Playa del Carmen. Jason is 2 under through 6 holes and has lost 7 spots on the leaderboard. Luckily just about everyone who is ahead of him has already finished. He's 5 shots behind the leader (-12).

Looks like the PGA is sort of half-assing it this weekend, too. They apparently didn't take the necessary shot tracker technology on the road with them to Mexico.
