The SEC claims to be a football conference, and when it comes to this season in basketball, they have done a lot to hammer that point home.
It is currently the 9th rated conference in the RPI.
In the past two weeks, Mississippi State has lost to Alabama A&M, Auburn has lost to Winthrop, Alabama has lost to Mercer and Tulane, and Texas A&M has lost to Southern.
They currently have five schools outside the RPI top 50.
Of the 161 games that SEC teams have played, only thirty have been against the top fifty, and they've won eight of them.
This is why I cannot stand labels like "BCS Conference" or "Major Conference" or "Mid-major." The Mountain West isn't considered a major conference, yet it is tearing the SEC apart. for that matter, so is the Missouri Valley.
Kentucky, Mizzou and Florida are the only teams that have solidified themselves, and they haven't even solidified themselves that much. Kentucky's best win was against Maryland in the season opener, and it is questionable how good that win will end up being. Florida's best win to date is against Middle Tennessee, but at least they've avoided bad losses. Mizzou has a nice win against Illinois. Other than that, there's nothing, and the only opportunities those teams have remaining to get quality wins are against each other.
I know Xavier doesn't have room to talk, but wow, what a shit show the SEC is this year.
