The girls high school score spread quickly across social media Tuesday night … with the outrage right behind it: Bloomington South (http://www.mccsc.net/subsite/bhss/page/bhss-athletics-basketball-girls-3947) 107, Arlington (http://www.usatodayhss.com/team/arlington-high-school-indianapolis-in/girls-varsity-varsity-basketball) 2.
First-year Arlington coach Ebony Jackson said she respected the Bloomington South program but was disappointed with the way it handled the game hosted by the Lady Knights.
“No it’s not OK but (Bloomington South coach Larry Winters) will have to live with that,” she said. “If that’s how they want to carry themselves, that’s fine. I’m focused on me and mine and we’ll just keep going.”

Thoughts? I think at some point someone on Bloomington South's staff should have called of the attack. I'm not sure if bench players were in or what. Guess I would need to know more.

The score is definitely shocking at first glance, but these games can happen sometimes. If a coach takes his starters out, it's difficult to make JV players stop scoring. My father in law is a coach for a really good girls high school team. Last year, they won a game 92-12 in which a varsity starter didn't score after the first quarter.

If the coach was still pressing with his starters in, though, he's a dick.

And the two points were free throws...ouch

I'll have to check the archives, I thought we discussed a game quite similar to this not long ago.

But yeah, even if you pull your starters and put in 5 bench warmers, they are going to want to get score in the stat books when they can get it.

Mind you when you get what 40 or 50 up, maybe tell your team, don't even bother to defend them until this gets within 20 or 30...

I will not form my own opinion on this game until Dee Davis weighs in on it.

Apparently Bloomington South did not have JV players available.

That's rough.

Was playing in a YMCA league in which my team was getting blown out in the 3rd quarter, down like 65-35 or something crazy. Well, the a-holes on the other team began full-court pressing and slapping at the ball (or mostly our arms) to try to get to 100. It was enfuriating. The technical fouls started adding up on both sides but they still went for and got to 100. I hate losing and I am just plain impressed that no player or coach on the losing end of this didn't completely lose their mind and do something crazy or walk right out of the gym.

I don’t think this is as unusual as it sounds. 107-2 is a bit to the extreme, but looking through Cincinnati.com you can find quite a few single-digit scores or 50- and 60- point margins. Gamble Montessori’s girls beat Riverview East, 75-0 (http://preps.cincinnati.com/BasketballGirls/Boxscore?gameid=150617), but neither of those schools has any kind of following like Bloomington South. I think that may play a part in the outrage.

If there's a 30 second shot clock, and two 8-minute quarters in the second half, and you score burn off 27 seconds before scoring every time (because the team can't stop you), and they turn it over within 3 seconds in spite of themselves, that's 32 possessions in the half, and 64 points to be scored.

This is about the most extreme example, but at some point, when the talent disparity is that huge, you can't help but score points even as you try to end the game.

How can you teach the "never let up" attitude if you teach your team to let up? How about the other team recognize they aren't on that level and reclassify to a different level, not schedule the game if it's non-league, or suck it up?

You can't tell players not to try their best. But you can make coaching moves to lessen the damage. Once you realize, if not before the game, then certainly by the end of the 1st quarter that the game is in the bag, you do the following:
- bench your starters, only play those that get limited time
- do not press
- no fast breaks, let them set up their defense and then run your plays/motion
- defensively, no steals; play good position defense, hands up, contest the shots and rebound

If you do that, you are still getting what is essentially a good practice in (not as good as a competitive scrimmage, but better than a walk through). Your lesser players get to play in a game and score.
And, while you will still blow out the other team, it does not become a "story."

That reminds me of a game I was playing in as part of a casual tournament where we were about to solidly lose, no question about it near the end, and the opposing team held the ball for the last shot. I mean, what the fuck?

Live in southern indiana and here's what I have found out. Arlington didn't have a jv team and only had6 varsity players. Arlington's players were not very skilled and the referee's stopped calling traveling and double dribble on them shortly after the first quarter. Arlington full court pressed up until the third quarter which opened up easy layups for south. Coach should have had them pass the ball around more, but thought that would be more embarrassing for arlington's team. Keep in mind-@6 years ago Arlington put a 100+beating on another Indy team and no one said a word. Game should have never been scheduled with the huge difference in attendance drop(Arlington was taken over because of poor performance and attendance dropped to @500 students). South's got a lot of good kid's-raised over $ 60,000 for Riley's this year and does a lot of charity work.
