Rick Majerus could be a weird dude, and because he did weird things, I think some people concluded that he was a bad guy. I don't really think he was malicious or mean spirited. He could be hardass at times, but what coach isn't?? It's just that when Majerus was a hardass, he was a hardass AND he was weird about how he went about being a hardass, so those stories tended to resonate more. In reality, though, I don't think his antics were any more mean spirited than any other coach's.
He was different, but he was personable. He was funny. He was also passionate and knowledgeable. He didn't win at an elite level all of the time, but for the programs he coached at he won at a higher level than what they were typically used to.
I always liked him. I guess part of that is due to the fact that I'm often drawn to like different types of people. I'm genuinely sad that he's gone.

I don't know him. But I've met people who played for him at Utah and they absolutely loved him. Then again, they went to Utah so take that with a grain of salt.

Whatever you think about Majerus go to 6:40 of this video with Conklin speaking. This may give you a different perspective.

So sad to hear this news. I listened to the portion of the press conference when Conklin spoke about him and it's really touching. I'm sure there are a lot of tears in St Louis tonight.

Not the best human being on the planet by any means.
But he would put a middle finger in my face and tell me he didn't give a damn if he heard me say that.
Have to respect that.

That video is outstanding. Gives a great insight into what Majerus was about and how his kids felt about him.

Not the biggest Digger Phelps - but he has some interesting things to say - very nice - on ESPN this am. Gave him a lot of credit for Marquette's success under McGuire, particularly the 77 championship team.
Also said he originally got out of the game to take care of/be near his mother and only came to St. Louis after sister convinced him mom was well cared for - but it was hard on him.
Gotta credit the dude for that kind of affection for his momma.

It's clear that he was a great coach to those guys. But wow Rick is stone-faced when Conkin is next to him balling his eyes out. Kinda awkward.

Anyone who lived in a hotel for the maid service, clean towels, and mint on the pillow at night has figured out how to work the system.
Strange fat man, great fat coach.
Hate to see a fat man go so early like that.

He pretty much dragged St. Louis into relevance. Too bad he didn't have the chance to do more with them, for a variety of reasons.

We had a lot of fun making fun of him, but no doubt, the man could coach.
And he had just about brought St. Louis back into the spotlight. Let's hope his successor can keep the momentum going.
Class move by SLU with the Victory Light in his memory.
