Just curious- what’s the story behind the holiday tournaments having extra games not at the tournament site this year? Is there some new NCAA rule or other reason for this?
For example, before Butler played Xavier, they played Elon in an “Opening Game” of the Maui Invitational. If Elon had won, would they have gone to Hawaii instead of Butler? It looks like Butler was going no matter what, so what was this game?

We did one like it a few years ago - the Chicago Classic. First we hosted two pastry cart level opponents at Cintas Center under the banner of the Chicago Classic, then went to Chicago to play two more games against real competition, including that glorious game against Indiana.,

They included Elon and 3 other low-majors as part of the "Lower 48" bracket as it related to the Maui Invitational. It's meant to give more exempt games to low-major teams that otherwise wouldn't be invited to these exempt events. They'll have 4 games count as 1 game just like Butler would for purposes of scheduling.
