This is truly great news for X.

That's great. Should be a good thing.

"The Montgomery Road retail space, which is across the street from the existing Betta’s Italian Oven restaurant and cafe and Stones Lanes, will include outdoor dining, bars and shops, Ackermann said."
Looks like Dana's will have some competition for students walking from the campus area.
"Other than the land it’s leasing to Danamont, XU will not have an ownership stake in the new project."
This is a little bit dissapointing to me that Xavier doesn't have a stake in this. I'd be more willing to shop and eat at the new places if it was benefiting XU. It is still cool though.

Build the hotel and I will be the first guest!

This is a good thing. I know BJ may not like someone saying this, but everytime I have visited Dana's over the last few years after a game, it is always obscenely crowded. Xavier needs more than one freaking bar...and "Ryan's Pub" doesn't count.

XU doesn't want to be in the business of owning/managing retail development. This is a win-win for the university. They get new mixed use retail/housing development on campus -- essentially a university village -- without the cost of developing it. This is the way most universities now develop the ancillary aspects of their campuses.

Agree completely.
A developed area, even if not controlled by XU, will benefit the university in so many ways. Maybe someday Xavier can have a real "college town" aspect to it. Ok, probably not.

Exactly.
Also, recall that the article noted that all this development will appear to be a part/extension of campus.

A hotel on that spot would be totally awesome. Get a shake at the UDF there, Dana's up the street...perfect.

You guys are probably right...I was thinking too much like the world is the TV show Shark Tank and thought XU should have 5% equity in the businesses so they can profit off of what happens around there campus. But I understand them not wanting to be in businesses other than that of running their school.

If there's a hotel, restaurants and bars (and of course Cintas), you could have one heck of a day and night there without walking more than a couple blocks. So it'd be kinda like a "college town" feel to it.
Looking forward to all this.

Well, this only works for us old guys if there's a Walgreens there; so I assume it's in the planning/protest stage.
(Plus, I need to stop there after a couple hours at Dana's)

You need to buy your soldier suits before you go to the bar to pick up ladies.

They may have an interest in the upside. We don't know the terms of the land lease, but it wouldn't be unusual for a lessor to get a percentage of the lessee's profits.

I love that they are building the Norwood portion first. This should put an end to any lingering whining from that quarter about XU creating work but not contributing taxes.
