Both teams are in Richmond and now both are in the A-10, so CBS Sports did an article on the topic.

How far apart are Stanford and Cal?? I know both are in the Bay Area, but don't know where they are in proximity to each other.

Also in the Bay Area are Saint Mary's and San Francisco, although I don't know at what point a school is no longer considered relevant. Those two are only twenty miles apart. The greater San Francisco area actually has two sets of teams that are bitter conference rivals.

I guess Houston and Rice are not relevant, especially in basketball. Houston is leaving for the Big East anyway.

Richmond and VCU have always been rivals. They were old CAA rivals. Granted, it's not the same when it's not a conference game, but it was still a big rival. VCU and Old Dominion was also a good rivalry. I hope that one continues as well.

Stanford (South Bay) and Cal (East Bay) are maybe 10-15 miles apart.

I think VCU and Richmond is one of the best non major conference rivalries in hoops. Rivlaries are unique, especially geographic ones, because as intense as it is to the people within the region, most people outside the region hardly care. I mean, most people are probably aware that Washington State and Washington are rivals, but are still oblivious to the game itself.

VCU vs Richmond is a big rivalry that people outside the Richmond area probably aren't familiar with. The article is pretty spot on. When you talk about non major conference rivalries, it's probably up there with Nevada vs UNLV and BYU vs Utah. Gonzaga vs Saint Mary's is good too. The fact that they're once again in the same conference should jack it up even more.

There was definitely a buzz around the city last year. The rivalry will just keep getting better if the programs continue their upward trends. I definitely plan to attend this year.
