A friend of mine (who is an avid Butler fan) and I had the pleasure of discussing this game the other night. He had told me that he had spoken to one of the referees, Bo Boroski.

Boroski claimed that it was the hardest and weirdest way that he had ever seen a game end. He understanded how difficult it must have been on Xavier players/fans, but still maintains that it was the right call. Apparently the 10 minute delay that ensued was due to Hinkle not having a functioning stopwatch at the scorer's table (among other things).

Interested to hear everyone's views/memories from that day. I was in the stands with my grandfather (also avid Butler fan) going ballistic and shouting my lungs to exhaustion. Never have I felt more frauded or robbed about the ending of a game, and more than likely never will.

Thoughts?

Still one of the toughest losses to swallow I can remember, aside from the heartbreaking NCAA games. I remember really hating Butler before that game. I hated that they got every single call against us down the stretch in our own building to end our win streak the year before. I hated that flopping rat Matt Howard. I hated Butler and I wanted to go in there and knock them off as they were already becoming a darling of the college basketball season being nationally ranked and all.

And then THAT happened. I was absolutely furious and will never forget it. I would've ripped that goddamn water fountain out myself if I were there. Seeing all those fans provoking a 19 or 20 year old Holloway, the same fans who ride their moral high horses on this board about our guys being thugs, it took my hatred to a whole new level. They are right there below UC and ud for me. Right there.

It all started with that ridiculous held-ball on Lyons. The ref behind makes the call with absolutely zero view of the ball. It was all downhill from there.

I know..whatever!

Yea, whatever. But...

That game may well have changed the rest of the college basketball season drastically. Suppose we win, and both Xavier and Butler are one seed different than they were in the tournament. I wonder what would've happened in that parallel universe. F that clock.

This was trully the worst call down the strecth of that game. There is no way that way a held ball. Total BS. Butler did not deserve that win.

I am about as mad about this game as the tackle by Oden.

My thoughts exactly. The game angered me more than any in my life. I already hated Butler going into the game. They got a million breaks to make it to the title game the year before, Matt Howard is a giant doofus, they win their league every yr and go to the title game but can't fill their stadium, etc, etc...

How is it that they were coming off a NCAA title game appearance and we were the only really good team coming to their dumpy arena all year and they couldn't even sell it out? Xavier had to have had thousands of fans there too.

What pissed me off more than anything was what happened after the decision was announced that the game was over. All these d-bag Butler fans who knew they just stole the game from the better team ran in front of us (we were in the first row of a section behind some railings) and flicked us all off as they ran by us. I'm positive they only did it because a large obstacle was between us and them. They saw the shock/anger in us and just acted like tools. There were also some other Butler clowns talking trash about Xavier after the game outside the stadium that I didn't appreciate.

I vowed to never go back to Indy and haven't been back since. Yes, that's a dumb thing to do; I'm sure I'll go back at some point. One thing is for sure...

Don't forget though, at that point they had not yet been to their first title game. That was the year they knocked off Syracuse and we would've faced them again in the Elite 8 if we had won that 2OT thriller against Kansas State. I have no doubt we would've beat those bastards. But in any case, that single game, may have been enough to reverse our seeds, making us a 5 and them a 6 in that region. That Kansas State game could've never happened, and who knows how the rest would've panned out. Interesting to ponder I guess. All because of one little clock.

Ah, you're right about that. Sorry, got my years confused. But yep, I agree, who knows what would've happened with the seeds, could've been us getting the cupcake walk to the final four.

I was traveling and didn't see this game live. My cell phone started blowing up, which gave away the ending before I could see it. I think I was as upset about the spoiler as I was about the result.

Anyway, it's several years later, and I still have one question that I would love to know the answer to. The timekeeper did not have a stopwatch. What the hell was he doing during the timeouts?? Counting to himself?? I have this scenario in my head where the timekeeper shows up without really wanting to be there, realizes he doesn't have the stopwatch, decides that he can get away with it and that no one will notice if he just counts to himself, and then almost makes it but screws it all up in the last minute and everything goes to shit.

There was nothing unlucky about this from Xavier's standpoint. Butler's preparation met it's opportunity. If you win, you deserve to.

Speaking of broken clocks, this is a similar story from the Olympics today

I wonder what the reaction on the Butler board would be to such a story.

Paging Fired Up Karen...

I was there. I st next to some Butler fans high up in the lower section, midcourt.

First and foremost, it was a thrilling game. I loved that there were vocal supporters for both teams, so it was an audible overload you seldom get in college games any more.

X was not scoring early, but scrapped and stayed in the game. When Crawford started throwing things in from 25 feet under pressure, it was as good as it gets for me in the college game.

The end was disappointing. but I don't think the officials made a wrong call given the errors on the part of the clock guy. The Butler fans around me were as mystified as we were about what had happened.

I just agree to disagree that pulling a water fountain out of the wall was justified or appropriate. It's a game, not a mortal combat.

There is a subtext to the Holloway post game theatrics about going into the stands for some ahat, and the water fountain outburst. Why wasn't that a learning moment for the Xavier staff and players about how to handle adversity? Three years later, Holloway is still using bad judgment at the end of the UC fiasco, then absolutely botches the presser. Urban Meyer, in disciplining Stonebreaker at OSU, has talked about the 10 second rule.......count to ten before you do something stupid. I would hope that part of a Xavier education for athletes is to find appropriate outlets for frustration.

I'm still going to go to Hinkle for games. W can get tickets in numbers and make a lot of noise on the road. Boycotting really helps no one and "punishes" no one.
