View Full Version : More Flyers in NBA will lead to wins at Xavier

While broadcasting the basketball games for the past three decades, I have shared fans’ anguish when the Xavier Musketeers have gotten the better of the Dayton Flyers.

Starting in the 1990s the rivalry became lopsided on the court, and while Dayton has regained the ability to hold serve at home, its losing streak in Cincinnati continues.

Dayton’s NCAA appearances have been episodic compared to X’s, and the reason behind the disparity between the two programs may be evident in the hallway outside the home locker room at the Cintas Center.

Former Flyer Brian Roberts will be playing on the New Orleans Hornets team in the Las Vegas summer league. He and Johnson both have legitimate shots to make a roster while Wright impressed coaches and peers with his work ethic and character, and his 25-point performance in the regular-season finale should help secure his future with Golden State.

Three Dayton players on NBA rosters would do wonders to raise the profile of the program in the eyes of recruits, which in turn could lead to wins at Xavier — on a road to the Final Four

Wright started with 5 rookies after coming from Dakota the week before. The Spurs had sent their entire starting team home to rest. 'Bout the same as a Devores league game.
After the draft prospects come in, don't see any of these guys sticking.

the fact that the city of Dayton has more players in the NBA than UD will ever have shows how far behind they are....its funny to me that they think they are a few non roster invites away with competing with Xavier.

One of Dayton's problems is their fixation on Xavier. Cross referencing everything you do with what everything someone else is doing isn't going to make you better. It will just reinforce an unhealthy obsession.

Former X players in the NBA won while they were at X. It's the "winning at X" part that we built on. Georgia Tech has several former players in the NBA as well, but you can't build a long-standing successful program around just that. IE, just look at the current state of Georgia Tech's program.

Summer league roster is NOT an NBA roster. Are we kidding? If those are the standards Xavier could claim Jason Love (76ers) Justin Cage (Bulls) and probably other players I cannot think of.

This is funny. It's not close and hasn't been for quite a while.

Since 1990, Dayton has 4 tournament appearances. Xavier has 17. Xavier has 6 Sweet 16 appearances. Dayton has 0. Since both joined the A-10, Xavier has 4 tournament championships and 9 regular season championships. Dayton has 3 and 1.

What I find the stupidest is the idea that beating Xavier at Cintas is going to be the watershed moment, the Battle of Midway, in Dayton's eternal struggle for basketball recognition.

Seriously, if they beat XU this year, it will merit a four-second mention on SportsCenter, and that's it. No one outside Southwestern Ohio will care. It doesn't clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament, or the Sweet 16, or the Final Four. It doesn't win an Atlantic 10 championship. Now, it certainly will cause every Xavier fan in America to rip tufts of hair out of his/her head, scream obscenities, and hurl feces (their own, and potentially any other feces within easy reach) in all directions, but even that can't really make up for the last quarter century, can it? It's not like this would be the first time in recent history that Dayton has had a better team than Xavier - Purnell's teams turned that trick a few times and yet it didn't do enough to move the needle.

Quit acting like Fredo Corleone and maybe people will stop treating you like him.

This.

Though I wouldn't say this is "one of" Dayton's problems, but the root of their problems.

Same point, great explanation for why Dayton's program has been stalled for the last 20 years.

It's all about "beating Xavier in Cincinnati" and when it will finally happen for them. What difference is it gonna make when they lose the following year?

Not to rain on your parade, or anything, but you really think that 3 potential NBA players is going to compare to our walls filled with posters of X grads playing in the NBA? Really? Let's pretend for a minute that Brian Roberts overcomes his permanent, terminal case of the "flu" and makes it onto an NBA team (if I can suspend belief to enjoy Batman or Spiderman I can do it here too). Okay. So "BRob" is on a team. So what? You're still ud. You still play in a subpar arena in a sub-sub par city with a coach you hired so you could pretend that you're Xavier. But, we're still the real Xavier. We're better in every way possible. We'll see your Brian Roberts and Chris Wright and raise you a David West, Jordan Crawford, and Derrick Brown. Then just for kicks, we'll throw in Brian Grant, Ty Hill and James Posey. There is no comparison. Comparing ud to X is like comparing apples to a fighter jet.

The sooner you deal with your jealousy and inferiority complex, the sooner you'll be able to find happiness in your mediocrity.

I feel like after Prosser's last season at XU, UD had like a 30-game lead in the series on Xavier. Now it's at 10, apparently.

These things can dwindle when you lose season series to your rival. From the 2002 to 2008 seasons, I think UD was something like 3-15 against Xavier. Someone may want to check me on that, though.

X has picked up an impressive 15 games in the all-time series since the 2001-2002 season, which was Matta's first year after Prosser left for Wake Forest. The past eleven seasons, Xavier is 22-7 against Dayton. It's pretty remarkable to average two wins per year against any opponent at all, better yet versus a team that considers you to be their biggest rival.

That first season when the domination began in 2001-2002, X went 3-0 against UD and ever since that time they never looked back and have continued to thoroughly own the series.

If Stats-R-Us were still alive, he could easily look at other series in the college game and figure out the biggest historical turnaround in a series. Dayton had at its peak something like a 30-35 game lead. Ever since the Thad Matta regime, that deficit has been slashed considerably.

So we just got back from vacation and flew into Dayton. As we were exiting, the Stewards/Stewardess were talking and I heard them say that they've never been to Dayton but it didn't look very great. I turned around and smiled and said well there isn't anything to do in Dayton, that's why the people in Dayton go to Cincinnati for a good time.

Like. =^
