I know that Notre Dame generates a lot of eye-rolls on here, but I thought this quote from a Fox Sports article by Sean Keeler was interesting, discussing football's prominence at Notre Dame and how such emphasis would prevent it from joining a conference.

His article did yield this quote, however:

Not this time. Not this dance. With football, Notre Dame is Notre Dame. Without it, it’s Xavier. If I’m Big 12 acting commissioner Chuck Neinas or his successor, Bob Bowlsby, I’m chasing an all-or-nothing deal here. Either you’re all-in or you’re not.

Not sure what to make of this quote, aside from that without football, Notre Dame is just another hum-drum Catholic university like little old Xavier. Honestly, I can't think of any similarities between ND and XU, aside from the fact they are both Catholic. I highly doubt Keeler is attempting to draw any academic parallel.

Thoughts?

Essentially, it means that if ND dropped football they'd be awesome. As it is, ND kind of blows.

You know, I think you're right.

ND drops football and becomes the team that beat them?

I'm so confused.

I think what the writer meant is, without ND FOOTBALL, you are just getting pretty good bball, and olympic sports. Xavier has good athletics but no football. Don't think it was meant as a slight, for all you thin skinned folks who see disrespect at every turn, in the media.:sword:

Oh, people, know the writer. I worked with Sean Keeler for his entire stay in Cincinnati which Thank God was brief. He is the lead sports columnist for the Desmoine Register, a Gannett Newspaper. That appears to be one of those "You need to expound on this" columns. Yay. And Sean, who regarded all other spots department employees as his personal slaves, was in his way trying to complement and degrade Xavier at the same time.
But know two things about Notre Dame. Hell will freeze over before Notre Dame joins a conference for football. Like the mafia they'd rather eat their young than part with money. They don't share. They are part of the BE for all sports except football simply because they can and will. If the BE ever issues an all or nothing order, "Hello, A10." :D
