Florida International is a very tough gig. I'd rather be the associate head coach at Louisville than the head coach at FIU. I understand wanting to be a head coach, but better opportunities (being just about any other opportunity) would have opened up if he waited.

This whole interview is odd. Why would Pitino say anything at this juncture?? The deal isn't finalized. It's obvious neither FIU or Richard Pitino wanted it in the media until it was, yet Rick Pitino is talking about it. So, in addition to making it about him, he was premature in making it about anything. Hasn't Pitino been around long enough to know that just saying "No Comment" was the way to go??

You're questioning Pitino being premature?

Has Isiah Thomas ever been successful in anything he has done in his post playing career? It seems he's been a miserable failure at just about every job he's had, whether it's coaching, GM or running the old CBA, which I think went bankrupt while he was commissioner.

He has been successful in adding diversity, which is our overall goal. Diversity makes us stronger.

He was so-so to below average with the Pacers for about 1/2 a season. The rest of the time he was awful.

It's more of a mess to accept because everybody wants to transfer out of the program and he's going to have nobody that's on scholarship than anything.

I think that's a good thing, actually, for a team as bad as FIU. Gives the new coach a chance to completely start over.

I agree. When a team's only won eight games, it's not that bad if those players want to leave.

He's managed to make this story about him:

Go, that's always been his style. Sat through a corporate speech of his back in mid-'90's while he was still at KY, and his entire motivational speech was about himself. He used several examples of how people were motivated from his players, to his assistants to his family. Yet every story was about how HE did it, not the individual who the story was about.

I recall a major argument after the dinner between executives about how awful the speech was. The quote throughout the week became "While there's no I in TEAM, there's lots of I's in Pitino".

This could make the job easier. He has a built-in 4 year excuse.

He's coaching FIU. Given their history that should be a lifetime built in excuse.
