Accoding to Goodman, Weatherspoon is leaving OSU...
Jeff Goodman@GoodmanCBSReply
Ohio State's J.D. Weatherspoon is transferring out, sources told CBSSports. High-level athlete who barely played for Buckeyes.
I wonder if the coaches will want to make a run at him again or if it won't even be considered due to the two guys we have on campus this week. Its hard to tell if he has progressed at all since he never really saw the light of day at OSU.

No. He is 6'5/6'6 with no jump shot, no ball handling ability, very little offensive skill. He can jump out of the gym though.
He probably wouldn't get off the bench at Xavier either.

Well, let's all go back and review all the posts about how Xavier just had to have 'Spoon as a Musketeer because of his player recruiting rankings, shall we?
Uh, maybe not.....

How did those computer rankings work out for Kentucky?

I don't see Sibert leaving, but maybe Weatherspoon. However, if Sullinger stays, 'spoon may stick around because that's really the guy who got him the scholarship to OSU.
My post from 3/21 in a different thread. Sully didn't stay so neither does 'spoon...and I'm sure OSU doesn't give two craps (at least as far as JD goes).

I just brought this up the other day......the raccoons class in 2010 would have been Latham (bust), kyrl (bust), weatherspoon (nothing after 2 years), and parrom (good but injury ridden). Mack can definitely be excused with the 2010 class.....and for a bonus we have justin martin, who hopefully will turn out to be solid.

After the top top players in classes it's much more hit or miss with these guys based on whatever their rank is. We're not Kentucky, we (our coaches) have to be very smart about who we recruit so we can avoid another class like 2010.

I'll never understand this thinking. Miller's guys were also Mack's guys. Mack was his #1 assistant.

I think the 2011 class worked out pretty damn well, Dez had a great season, and we saw the emergence of Dee towards the end of the year, Trav's transfer wasn't the best, but there's still hope in my opinion. Mack's recruiting here very well, and I think part of that comes with the growth of the program. Xavier's starting to be more prevalent in the basketball community, making it easier to get good recruits. We'll have our share of top 10 prospects soon. I'll bank on it.

Doesnt mean Mack had a good relationship or helped bring in all the recruits Miller was after. Book Richardson was Latham's lead recruiter, not Mack. One of the reasons Mack hired Bino Ranson was to get Latham back in the fold. Kevin Parrom's lead recruiter was Book and he left to go to AZ with them. Ari Stewart's main recruiter was Mack, had we landed him instead of Parrom I think Stewart would have stuck with X during the coaching change. Just bc he is the #1 assistant doesnt mean he played a part in bringing in every player. I'm sure Chris didnt agree with every guy Sean offered a scholarship too.

That may be true as to a very small percentage of players, but it's absolutely not true as to the vast majority.

Nothing completely fact based or anything, but I think JD was more of a guy that Sean Miller wanted and not someone Mack actively pursued after getting the job. I wouldn't expect to see us go after him at all. I think a MAC school might be a good fit for him and his athleticism though.

Just because Mack was Miller's assistant does not mean Mack would have given a scholarship to ONE of the guys Miller did (if he was the head coach).
By the time Mack took over in April he didn't have many choices.

It could be argued though that Mack was recruiting players for Miller's system, instead of his own system, which has its differences.

The same is true of Matta-Miller. If I recall, Miller wanted Kyle Lowry over Churchill Odia. Lowry was even ready to commit to X but Matta wanted to hold out for Odia.
Lowry's currently averaging over 15 points, 5 boards and 7 assists per game ... in the NBA!
Odia? I'm still waiting for him to "shock the world."

I certainly don't know of one, especially when you see what look at his 4-year stats (http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/22189/churchill-odia).

Where was Odia ranked? Walley Judge I believe was a top 10 recruit maybe top 5.

Far, far lower than Judge.
I doubt MAck is even willing to entertain the idea of taking Weatherspoon and I hope he's not. Weatherspoon is a good athlete, but seemingly not a very good player. I think he's like Keith Jackson. His ability to throw down some dirty dunks makes people think he's got potential to be a great player, but it really isn't there. We are way too loaded on the wing over the next few years for it to be worth pursuing him. Wherever the kid lands, it's going to be somewhere not nearly as good as Xavier.

This pretty much sums up my thinking exactly.
Definitely not the type of player I want tieing up a scholarship for 3 years so that he can play for 2.

He's a typical Brian Gregory type of UD player: very athletic with a limited skill set.

Looks like Matta told Weatherspoon he needed to get a fresh start somewhere else. I don't see anything wrong with Thad telling the young man this.

Good luck to the kid. That is life.

I would be shocked if Weatherspoon ended up at Dayton. I believe Archie has 5 scholarships to give between this spring and next year. Four of them will almost certainly have to go to guards, with two of them being legit PGs.
Archie is hot after Ryan Taylor this spring, so that would be the third guard spot. And unless things change in the near future, there's a pretty good chance (some say it's a lock already) that Jordan Sibert takes one. It all makes sense at least. Archie was his main recruiter at OSU, and he knows Kevin Kuwik from his time at OSU. One guy I know said Sibert almost left for UD in December, but was convinced by Sullinger to stick around for the rest of their last season as teammates. If by some chance Sibert goes elsewhere, you never know who may be calling now that his release is official, his spot will have to go for a guard. Sanford is the only guard on the books for 2014. UD recruits in the near future have to be guard heavy.
The last spot is almost certainly being held for Maverick Morgan. People say he's leaning Dayton, even his dad in a DDN article, but this summer could see a big swell in interest for him. I'm still not sure how I feel about him, but there's no question he's the top target in 2013, and likely the only non-guard type getting the full recruiting press right now. I think Archie likes his potential, but I also think he knows the value of locking down the home front, so to speak. Getting the two Columbus kids, potentially Sibert and then Morgan (and even Kevin Johnson or Jaaron Simmons if he doesn't get better guard options elsewhere) would really do the trick.
There is also Willie Moore from Aiken, now a free agent so to speak. I'm led to believe there is chatter behind the Rivals pay wall that there may be mutual interest, but I'm not behind that wall so I really can't speak to that. Certainly wouldn't be surprising if he ended up at UD. He needs a school and UD needs guards.
Never say never, but I don't see Weatherspoon at Dayton. Perhaps Akron/Kent State/Miami/Cleveland State. The only way he becomes an option for UD is if Ralph Hill decides to leave within the next few days, which appears unlikely from the lack of talk. Archie just needs a different type of player.

This is a combination of recruiting classes. Kyrl and Parrom were 2009 and Latham and Weatherspoon were 2010.

If he picked OSU over Xavier coming out of high school and we offer him again I would get sick to my stomach. We shouldn't be anyone's blatant second choice if the 'bigger school' didn't work out for him.

You can't let ego get in they way of putting our best team on the floor. I think we were Drew Lavender's 10th or 11th choice out of high school.
That being said, I don't think you need to worry. He's too similar to Travis Taylor to offer a scholarship.

JD won't be at X next year. It's not because he chose OSU over us last time. It's because he's just not good enough to play here. He actually wasn't good enough to get legit minutes at OSU either. He was extended the scholly because of Sullinger and because he was a hometown kid. Anyway, I have no worries that X would actually consider bringing Weatherspoon into the fold.

Yeah, if there is one spot we are totally legit, it is the 3 spot. Weatherspoon isn't worth a scholarship at X and he knows that. His first 2 years aren't gonna help anything regardless of whomever offers him.
