Ok. The Mods may flog me for not putting this under the Coaching Carousel thread, but Miami is a rival.........isn't it?

Anyway. The Redskins.....errrrr.....RedHAWKS hired John Cooper today. No not the John Cooper who is so loved and revered at Oh-ho-ho State, but the John Cooper who had a 43-52 record at Tennessee State.

Yeah. THAT's the kind of guy that will cause the Millett Mausoleum to turn to Millett Mania.

Here's what Coach Cooper had to say at his Press Conference:

“I feel honored and I’m gracious for the opportunity,” said Cooper, 43, as his father, John, and step-mother, Milly, looked on. “I stand before you because I believe this place can be special.

Yes. You're gracious for the opportunity. Sounds about right.

And you stand before all because you believe that the place can be special. Wow. Any more cliches you want to use other than the "special place" one? Oh, you did. The "right way" cliche. Yep. Used that one too.

And this guy was allegedly a former Rhodes Scholar candidate. Are we sure that he was not a "Road's Scholar?"

Well done Miami. How very MAC of you. (Mediocre And Common)

One of only two teams to beat Murray State last year.....that's all I've got.

Good. Nothing like hiring a coach based upon one game where everything went right.

Murray State played them again in Nashville in late February. Murray State beat them by 18.

I can't believe Jeff Boals did not get either job.

Remember when he was a candidate for the job that ultimately went to Kelsey? I'm sure he thought getting the number 2 gig at OSU would land him a head coaching job quicker.

Meanwhile, Kelsey takes the Xavier job, quits basketball altogether for a year, and lands a head coaching job at a pretty good school.

I'm not laughing at Boals, don't know anything about the guy. Just surprising.

I hope he runs an actual offense.

MoR : You could be a school that hired a coach based on the fact that he is the brother of the guy who coached the school 50 miles from you.

He was quoted in yesterday's Enquirer as saying he "likes to get up and down the court" which apparently drew a round of applause. I guess they want something different than Charlie Coles' methodical, half court offense.

The article also said Miami averaged 1,797 fans last year. Don't know if that's a typo or not, but seriously, only 1,797 fans? That's embarrassing.

I'd be shocked if it was even that.

I believe it. When X plays up there, it feels at least a third of the fans are there for Xavier.

I think people just want something different than something that loses.

If Miami won the MAC every year, they'd be fine with a slow tempo.
