Honestly, I can't count the number of times I was underage in a bar or club before I was 21. That said, if I had ever been a scholarship basketball player on a Top 10 team, preparing for a Sweet 16 game in the NCAA tournament, I doubt very seriously that I would have deigned to be out drinking at a club mere days before the game, let alone getting in a fight with teammates in so doing. Buzz may have some serious work to do in terms of realigning this group's priorities ...

They fought in a bar on Janaury 29th. January 29th was during the season!

If they had shown this fight at noon on ESPN, Jason Whitlock would have awakened froma a deep food coma to write about his outrage.

Nevermind. I now see that the incident took place on January 29th, not on March 20th, when the incident was first reported. At this point, they were in the middle of Big East play. Regardless, I would probably generally abstain from drinking while in season if a d1 basketball player, but I'm sure most don't ...

I have no idea what Roach is saying, but I hope it has something to do with not being Catholic enough.

Bar fight? Nobody complained? "Tickets issued". Newsworthy, I guess. As usual I don't see any need for moral outrage. Kids got in a fight. Big whoop.

Did this occur at a Cooters?

I saw the word "abstain" in his post - that's pretty Catholic :D

For the record, my posting about it had absolutely nothing to do with moral outrage on my part.

I put it up here in the context of how it may or may not affect Marquette's reputation with some people, thinking about the crap we've had to put up with, because a couple of our kids were allowed to sit in front of a microphone when they were overheated - especially considering that the intent of their message was good and otherwise misused and misquoted.

Overall, none of this is a big deal to me, but I found it interesting that it happened. I don't recall hearing much about it when it was finally revealed.

I'm sure the reaction will range how it normally ranges with this stuff: from who cares to a highbrow sense of moral indignation on the part of some hypocrites.

Man Todd mayo was a 20 year old freshman. The mayo's love holding their kids back multiple years. I think I going to tell the wife we are holding back our kids 2 years starting next year. They will dominate.

Massillon Ohio has been perfecting that move for generations, and yet they still suck at football.

As a person w/ son who plays competitive AAU, you would be surprised how often this happens and it has to be for sports. You cannot convince me otherwise.

I don't look down on it too much. A lot of schools and players, including Xavier, end up with the same situation -- a player using his first year of eligibility in his age 20 or even 21 season.

Imagine a player with a June birthday. They turn 19 the summer after graduating from high school. But they go to prep school to develop for another year, and so enroll at college at age 20. But they're a partial qualifier, so they sit their first year, and bam, you're 21 the first time you play a minute of college basketball.

Oh I know. I coached a team in a 5th grade AAU league this year. Sometimes the kids we played against looked like they were in high school. Played 1 team with a kid who was from out of the country and they said he never had a birth certificate, was adopted or something. I think I saw him driving home after the game. Saw another game where this team was really good. I really thought they were impressive for an 8th or 9th grade group. Had guys playing around the the backboard on layups and rebounds. One of their parents told me they were 5th and 6th graders. I told her i'm not that dumb. Unless the kids from Louisville, KY just mature at a very young age.

I know, I know. It's sick, really.

20 year old freshman is not that outrageous. I turned 19 in October of my Freshman year. If I had gone to prep school, or been redshirted I would have been a 20 year old freshman my first year of basketball.

Then again, I never played college basketball, but the point still stands.

I thought AAU was done by birthday, not grade. Is that wrong? Maybe it's only soccer.
