Charlotte seems to be shopping conferences. I hope we have VCU and speed dial.

The A10 does not need CAA, MEAC, MAAC, etc. schools in the A10. Losing UNCC is addition by subtraction.
Now can someone start a football program at Fordham, please.

wow the sun belt conference. That is a significant step down. My how they have fallen.
Forgot about them starting a football program. I guess the Sun Belt would be good for that but it is still a really significant step down in terms of basketball.

They have one. It plays in the Patriot League, which really is the perfect basketball conference for them.

I meant a DI program so that they would be able to leave the A10 for a football playing conference. The A10 gets to rid itself of UNCC because they want DI football. I fear that is the only way the A10 can get rid of Fordham.

Duquesne is now in the NEC, which is a scholarship conference. I can't say for certain, but I don't think the Patriot League is. Fordham has won it, and even been ranked in the top 25, but I don't think they give scholarships.

Personally, I'd be happy if they left for the Patriot League, or any league. I also think it would be better for them. Playing against natural rlivals like Holy Cross, Bucknell, Lehigh and Lafayette and actually having a chance at being competetive will be much better for them than the Atlantic Ten. The Patriot League is div1. It's not FBS, but it is div1.

I'm sure Alan Major will love playing in the Sun Belt.
It is crazy how football dominates tis country.

Charlotte is looking at the Sun Belt because football dominates. There is something very ironic about that.

No kidding. Is anyone at Charlotte really going to care about the big Charlotte/North Texas football game? And then on top of that Charlotte will play a bunch of basketball games that no one will are about either.
It must be nice for Charlotte to get all that taxpayer money to funnel to their football program which will lose millions of dollars the next few years.
Any chance UMASS, now with Temple leaving, takes all of their sports to the MAC?

Sunbelt is a decent place for football and basketball. A lot of good coaches move up the ranks through the Sunbelt. I doubt Charlotte had a lot of options for FB if they wanted to stay in the A-10 for BB.

In basketball they average about one at-large bid every ten years or so. If anything, a team like Middle Tennessee may have gotten a bid had they not played in such a weak conference. This is the second straight year the tournament winner has gone to the play in game.
I remember Troy getting into the top 25 in football the year they beat Missouri. I think it was 2004. That is the only time I ever remember a Sun Belt team in the rankings. It lasted a week. The MAC isn't strong, but it is substantially more accomplished than that. There are 11 football conference, and the tenth best league is usually quite a bit better than the SBC.
If Louisville gets the B12 invite they have been hoping for, is UMASS next in line for the BE?

UMass will be an affiliate member of the MAC for football, which is probably better than being a full member.
As far as UMass eventually joining the Big East, why stop at 37 members?? (or whatever the hell it's up to now).

UMass is playing in the MAC for football. I hate to ever agree with LH, but it would seem to be a logical move at some point for them to join the Big East, who is desperate for programs that have a heartbeat.
Whether they would want UMass for basketball is a different story. But with BC out of the picture, I don't see why that would be a huge hurdle.
(I see Brew beat me to it.)

How many people attend UMass games and how many people are Charlotte expecting to see their games?

I guess it depends on your definition of decent. For example, the Super Bowl Champs had 3 players from Troy on their roster. That is pretty decent. The top football teams in the league will definitely get your attention when you play them. BCS teams dominate the Sun Belt, but it isn't unusual for Sun Belt teams to win a game or two along the way, and they rarely get to play these games at home. They do take a lot of C-USA and MAC teams to the woodshed.
They didn't have a great basketball year, but USA, A-State, WKU, ULL, MTSU, and a few others are pretty good year-in and year-out. They aren't great... just decent.

Has everyone forgotten about the elephant in the UNCC living room, the NFL Carolina Panthers??????????? Remember what happened to a football program in 1973 after the advent of the Bengals five years earlier????Wasn't that program Xavier of Ohio????? I remember December 1973. Damn. Charlotte football has about as much chance as a diauretic dog of succeeding. Their basketball program will win the NCAA before their football program goes to a BCS bowl game.:mad::confused:

Fair enough.
It isn't unusual for the SBC to produce a good team that is tournament caliber. Middle Tennessee was pretty good this year, but their profile wasn't quite good enough to make the NCAAs.

"Q": Need to lean w/ "Go" et al on your point. XU football was in deep decline well before the Bengals arrival. With no league affiliation football was too expensive a proposition. Remember in 1973 XU was barely 2000 enrolled, a tiny stadium, again no league, no TV etc. I have the fondest memories of Carroll Williams, John Shinners, Danny A, Jim Stofko, Walt Meiner, et al, but the Athletic Board surely saw the handwritten red ink even before the NFL arrived.
But your inferential point is (per usual) most valid. Charlotte is a market with limitations translating to limited dollars to be spent. UNCC will not see real big time football for a lengthy generation, and even playing in a SunBelt, C-USA level is very costly.
Personally, I think UNCC wanting football is more a handy harmless excuse for them to exit the A 10. They really have not performed very well, as a state school lack commonalities with most A 10 schools, have not developed the rivalries w/ Richmond or GW, and overall lack some direction to their athletics. The above is not to say UNCC is no longer welcome in our league. Rather wanting to start football is a polite means of exiting from a situation which may never pan out.

Supposedly, they are building the Charlotte FB stadium in such a way that it is expandable to 40,000 (from the 15,000 that it will be to start). So if the 9'ers enjoy as much success after about 5 years in as UMass has in recent years, I could see where CUSA could come calling.

You're simply kidding, right? I presume you understand McShane's disposition about sports.

Yes.
Charlotte leaving hurts Butler more than the A10. If we get down to 12 members there will be no need to invite anyone to join.

I was thinking the same thing, Charlotte announcing (or hinting) it wants to leave, is bad news for Butler.
For some reason the A12 has a beter ring than the A14.
I know you hate divisions, but with 12 teams you could have two 6 team divs - play each team in your div twice, and the 6 from the other div once for 16 games.
GREAT MIDWEST
St. Louis
Xavier
Duquesne
LaSalle
St. Joseph
dayton
EASTERN SEABOARD
St Bonnie
Fordham
Rhode Island
U Mass
Geo. Washington
Richmond
Of course setting that up, knowing U Mass is the next likely exit is also bad for Butler, since that would mean we would need to replace an EAST team. (And it would be stupid to split LaSalle and St. Joes).

UConn will do all they can to keep UMass out of the BE. But once UConn leaves, UMass is a strong candidate.
