South Bend does suck. I grew up just 30 miles from there and the ND fans are even worse than the city, if that's possible. I don't know what possessed my parents to move from Springfield, OH to Goshen, IN when I was younger, but I sure don't miss the stupid obsession in northern Indiana with their crappy school now that I'm in Minnesota. Besides, what a bunch of pathetic underachievers in the Dance. I can't wait to knock them out early again.

My own personal interactions with Notre Dame are limited. On one hand, when I was in undergrad and visited a few friends who went there (visited for a football game--a hilarious 38-0 drubbing by USC in 2007), we were throwing a football around before the game and I found $20... pretty good.

On the other hand, I have now graduated and made the insane decision to continue my education, and it seems like nearly half our class is made up of "golden domers" (damn, that's annoying). The old joke, "how do you know if someone went to Notre Dame? ........ Don't worry, they'll tell you" is definitely rooted in reality, and trust me, it gets old quickly.

$20 can't buy my love... I HATE NOTRE DAME.

As far back as I can remember, I wanted to go to ND. All of the cronies around our Irish Catholic neighborhood and at St. Joseph's parish convinced me that it was the only place to go. I applied, and they said "Come on down" so I was all set and ready to attend.

My dad then, for the first time (and the last) spoke up on the matter. "Me boy, your sainted grandmother was a long time member of the Rosary and Altar Society at St. Xavier, and if you will honor her memory, go to Xavier."

My Dad was a wise and very well educated man, who graduated from UC and then UC Law School on the GI bill, long before it was subsumed into the dreaded State of Ohio university system.

And the rest is history....

I have LOATHED notre dame since grade school, when all the boys in my class talked about nothing but notre dame football in the fall and uc basketball in the winter. It was mind-numbing in so many ways. I HATE notre dame. I hate their mascot. I hate how their alumni think they're all geniuses and first in line for heaven. I hate notre dame!

When I worked, my joy from my grade school years continued because I had two bosses who were UC trustees and one who was neck deep in notre dame alumni crap. Losing to those leprechauns in '01 was abysmal for me when I returned to work after the game, but my boss didn't even care because basketball doesn't even register on the radar for most nd alumni. However, nothing pleased me more than getting to come in on a Monday morning knowing full well that notre dame had tanked again in football on Saturday and asking my boss "Did notre dame win this week? No? Oh. That's such a shame!" Bwahahahahahahaha! LOSERS!

My disdain for Not-re Dome is legendary.

I'm glad that your disdain for a school is so legendary that you've taken it upon yourself to speak for a twenty year old kid who lost his life in a tragic accident. To be honest, it is pretty cool that Mr. Sullivan's spirit has chosen you - of all people - to communicate his hostile feelings toward the school that Xavier happens to be meeting for a basketball contest this Friday (and a school that you have a childish distaste for). Classy.

In the interest of full disclosure: yes I do have connections to Notre Dame but Xavier will always and forever take priority in my heart. However, this has little to do with any allegiances and more about what is tasteful and decent. You, sir, are making light of a tragic accident that left an entire school community reeling and an entire group of people in mourning. This isn't about a team or an institution that you may or may not like; but real people with real emotions. It is about kids who lost a friend, a family who lost a member way too soon, and others who will be tortured by the incident for the rest of their lives.

It is a bit different when you look at it that way, isn't it?

Look man, I have no problem with your attempts to twist the words "Notre Dame," "Fighting," or "Irish" into some lame form of an insult. Hell, I don't even care that you dislike Notre Dame grads or the football program. That being said, know when to draw the line when it comes to subjects.

This is a place to discuss young men playing the game of college basketball for a university that stands for good. Our kids are doing their best to uphold the image of that school. I suggest you remember that you're also called to do the same.

Go X; beat ND.

I am a die-hard Notre Dame football fan. My oldest sporting passion. I have no problem with the Sullivan reference. Any joke at the school's expense for that tragedy is fine in my book.

It's one thing when s player gets a DUI or players trade jerseys for tattoos or get in a fight. Most fans know the game and know the players are held to a different standard and we look the other way a lot when it comes to their indiscretions because we love the games so much.Very little of what they do off the field affects the program long-term.

But when a student manager's passion for being part of the program is manipulated and exploited to send him into a situation he was terrified of and that results in his death? There's not enough shame in the entire sports world for that. Sullivan probably loved Notre Dame far more than most of the players that go through there and that was taken advantage of and led to his death.

I love Notre Dame but that is a black mark that should never leave the program. As long as its st the school's expense, I'll never have a problem with people bringing that up.

I have all the sympathy in the world for Declan Sullivan and his family. There is nothing worse than losing a child.

But when a child is lost because certain people who are charged to be protectors of those children have so much self absorption and so much hubris that they order that child to insert themselves into a very dangerous situation, and ultimately that child is lost, there is no sympathy. Notre Dame always likes to make itself out to be a "cut above". Well, they are not.

The "tragic accident" that you speak of was totally preventable. All that had to be done was that the ND people in charge acted like they cared for their charges. They did not. This "accident" responsibility is all on Brian Kelly and the atmosphere that has been created at ND.

I do not joke about Declan Sullivan, but pointing out the horrible foibles of Notre Dame is appropriate, especially when it involves a totally unnecessary death.

OK, so I make the annual visit to the bookstore to see what's going on.

Good news? They actually had a Xavier jacket. Cutter-Buck heavy windbreaker type. Got it.
After the other stuff I needed to replenish my supplies, I see this green Xavier St. Patrick's day type tee shirt they are selling.
Can't even tell you what it said, but it was a lighter shade of green, white lettering, and had Xavier printed on it and a big white shamrock.

Said to another guy, what the hell is this? How could you wear this shirt knowing who we are playing tomorrow night. Course he had kids at X and ND, so he didn't even understand my question.

I'm very Irish, but I'm not wearing their logo this weekend for anything.

All that had to be done was that the people in charge had to act like they cared? Did you read the letter written to the entire Notre Dame community from Fr. Jenkins? Are you aware of the scholarship fund? I think it is obvious that the school cared. You can read it here: http://www.ndfootballhistory.com/JenkinsLetter.html

I also like that you know that Brian Kelly was personally responsible and that this accident is a result of his hubris and a culture that he has created at the school. Please explain to me your inside knowledge of this culture and how it contributed. In fact, I'm sure the Indiana Department of Labor and OSHA would love to hear that because their report missed that. You can read it here: http://www.in.gov/dol/files/Notre-Dame-safety-order.pdf

Clearly, lots of people made mistakes in this situation. I'm sure this is one that tears them up. Hubris, however, is assuming that you know exactly how something happened and how someone feels about it when there is evidence to the contrary.

You're obviously passionate about this topic, and that's fine, but you're bringing us all down. The intent of this thread is to hate on Notre Dame for valid and also completely made up, stupid reasons. You're getting all worked up over a few posts in what is basically a pep rally thread. This really isn't going to be the best place to change people's minds about Notre Dame or what happened to Sullivan, and anything that has been posted in here was not meant to be taken personally and was not meant to offend anyone's personal sensibilities. It was meant to be fun. Going forward, I wouldn't take the things posted in a thread like this so seriously.
