After a rough start to the season, Jason is back at it again this weekend in Pebble Beach. This event will also mark the debut of Tiger Woods on the PGA Tour this year.

Hopefully a good showing for Jason and some movement up the money list is in store.

I know it is a business, but I hope that he takes time to enjoy the event. It's fun, but very odd. When you are at Pebble, it is kind of a circus because there are fans there that just want to see the celebs, and when you aren't at Pebble, there are only a handful of people watching.

Jason's pro-am partner today is an executive VP for sales at FedEx. Jason must be thrilled.

Knowing bigwigs is a good thing. FedEx guys are especially good to know. I think being a really nice guy is a requirement to get an exec position with FedEx.

The course that he is playing today is one of my favorites. I wish, for Jason, that Cypress Point was still a part of the rotation, but the Shores Course isn't a bad substitute.

Inauspicious start with a bogey on his first hole. +1 through 3.

-1 now through 7, which is in the really, really, really super early top 70 (a 38 way tie for 42nd).

He's also tied with Tiger Woods FWIW (nothing).

Even through 10. Dustin Johnson is -6 through 7. If he keeps up that pace, he will be hard to beat.

-2 is a pretty solid day. Looks like he will be around the top 40. Even par tomorrow (maybe even one over) should make the cut. Hopefully he'll do better than that.

They have to play all 3 courses with their am partner. Cut is after Saturday's round.

That killed him in the last pro-am. Hopefully that doesn't happen again!

Jason is 2 under through 6 today, 4 under overall. Currently tied with a couple guys named Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods (among others) for 19th, 6 strokes off the lead.

Who is Charlie Wi, who apparently shot the best first round at 9 under. Maybe he finished very late yesterday.

Who is Charlie Wi

Charlie is a 40 year old journeyman on the tour. He has lived in the US since he was 10, and many people would recognize him from the Stack and Tilt commercials. He has never won on the US tour, but he makes a pretty healthy living from playing golf. ($1.19M last year.)

Stupid ESPN leaderboard. Has Tiger (-4 yesterday) at -2 today for a total of -6.

Jason has exactly the same score so far, but they still list him as -4.

Thats because they're playing 3 different courses for this tourney.

They likely didnt play the same course yesterday.

Jason and his partner are T10 in their tournament. That is good because there are 2 ways to make the cut in this tournament. Jason is -5 for the tourney now.

...and yes, they use "Masters" scoring. The top 3 guys after yesterday were tied at -9 although one of the scores was a 61 and the other two were 63's.

All that has only more confused me. Thanks for that.

I don't want to jinx the guy, but he's kind of making Pebble Beach his bitch right now. -5 through 16 and 7 under overall (T10 with, among others, Hunter Mahan, Padraig Harrington and the former Mr. Nordgren).

It would be fun if he was playing with Phil (who he is currently tied with) or Tiger (who he is one stroke ahead of) on Sunday. He'd get a lot of TV time that way (not that they would actually show any of his shots!).

Anyone know who is caddying for Jason these days? Any XU ties?

Jason birdied the first hole but then had back to back bogeys on 4 and 5 to be +1 for the day after 6 holes.

Considering that he's playing at Spyglass Hill today, I wouldn't expect him to get any TV time today in either event.

Still, top 20 ain't too shabby at the moment, although the cut line for pros is Top 60 after the end of the day today.

Four birdies and four bogies through 11 holes. Quite the roller coaster.

Six birdies now through 15 holes....even par.

-9 under and on Page 2 of the leader board.

what a great achievement, given the place and the field.

Phil going deep today and Tiger on cue to lose it.

Very happy to see Jason do well. Hope this gives him some momentum going into the rest of the season.

One reason he did so well this weekend I think has to do with the fact that he lead the field in GIR at 77.8%.

Money aside, which I know he wants and needs badly, the fact that he finished as he did has to be a huge boost to his confidence.

Jason tied for 2nd in birdies this weekend. The 4 bogeys and double bogey that he made on Saturday kept him from being in the middle of the action. Great, great week though. Hopefully a sign of good things to come.

$153,600 for the effort this weekend. For comparison's sake, he make $338k last season on the Nationwide Tour. A top ten this week at the Northern Trust Open might put him ahead of last year's total by mid-February.

I guess this is a side note. Phil's 64 was one of the best rounds of golf I have seen in a while. He hit fairways and missed very few greens and putted like a machine. Tiger, on the other hand, was not very good, and it will be interesting to see if there is any long term damage to his psyche.

Quote of the day for me. When Charlie Wi was leading and Kevin Na was in 2nd, Kelly Tilghman said, "Wi in first. Na in second. Wi Na, Wi Na, chicken dinnah."

If Jason is smart he would skip LA Open as he is not the horse for that course and has played 4 straight weeks.

He is safe for the re-shuffle and might make field for US Open and Players if he can assemble a couple more Top 10s in Florida.

Needs more consistency and bogey avoidance, but the first taste of success should calm his nerves and boost his confidence.

He generally struggled after big weeks on the Nationwide Tour last year, so this is probably good advice. He also said in an interview before the season that he wasn't going to play too many weeks in a row.

Those dollar signs have to be tempting when you're on a roll, though.

PGATOUR site says he will tee it up in LA; Riviera is classic, short by modern standards, tricky, tight track, not well suited to bomb/gouge. But as "GO" says when you get on a roll it's no time to rest.

I fret a bit about the mental fatigue as playing every week can be a real drain, and the tour heads to FLA in 2 weeks. Jason needs to pace himself a little bit for a long season. He is probably re-playing those bogies (and a double) from last week, thinking a shot here or there would have meant that much more $$$. Hope he plays his best.

XUglow

Riviera is really tough when you are playing from the rough. The kikuyu grass is unlike anything else that you play. The ball sits up on it OK, but if you don't pick the ball off of the grass cleanly, the grass will play havoc with your club. If the grass is thick enough, it will stop your club in the middle of a swing. You would think short, straight hitters would have an advantage here, but Riviera plays longer than listed and is a pretty good test for all of the golfers.
