Just finished watching the Murray State/SEMO game from this evening. Not particularly impressive for Murray other than the 24-2 run that turned an 11 point deficit into an 11 point lead early in the second half. But this Canaan kid is just ridiculous. I'm not sure there's a better player in college basketball. I think of him as Tu Holloway....if Tu shot threes like Brad Redford. He's fun to watch.

I saw some of the game and Canaan is very good. If you have a chance to watch Iona play please do. Scott Machado might be the best PG in the country. Mike Glover, Momo Jones and Machado are a deadly triple threat and if they get into the tourney I think they are going to win a game since they'd be in that 12/13 range.

That name alone is worth one game.

If you remember Momo played for fat raccoon face last year out in the desert but got to transfer without sitting out because he had a sick family member back home and got a waiver.

Looks like Murray is about to go down. Losing by 3 with 3.5 to go with the ball. Tenn. St. would be crazy not to foul. Murray loses 72-68. Or for Coasterville 68-72.
And Murray States bubble might have just burst. THey will have an RPI north of 50 and it will only get worse in conference play. They have to win their tournament.

If I remember correct, Canaan had 31 points last night and the rest of his team had 37 points.
Glad to see Mick Cronin's old team go down in flames.

I think that's overstating it a bit (especially if they beat St. Mary's). But they should win the OVC Tournament anyway. Now that the pressure is off and no one will be paying attention anymore, I bet they start killing OVC teams again.

You guys think a school from the OVC that will have an RPI probably north of 60 by the time the season is over can get an at large?
I think you guys are the ones smoking crack. Teams from a conference like the OVC have no room for error.

They are a LOCK
drudy23
02-10-2012, 11:41 AM
I wouldn't say they're a lock, either. If they lose to St. Mary's, lose another regular season conference game (@ SEMO and @ Tennessee Tech could be tough) and lose in the OVC Tournament, they'll be NIT bound for certain.
Sure, IF all that stuff happens, then MAYBE.
But to say losing last night may "burst their bubble", which the original post said....that's just stupid. For one, they aren't even on the bubble. If the season ended today, they are a LOCK.

The season doesn't end today. I hate that argument. I am holding firm to the fact that if they do not win the OVC tourney they will not be in. I guess we will see if that happens and who is right.

I can't remember who it was, but a couple years ago someone was in the Top 25 and went to the NIT.

Canaan had 32 or 33 points and the team lost. Just terrible by the rest of his squad. Granted, Canaan did turn it over with a chance to win late.
That was one of the more blatant uncalled fouls I've seen this year.

I don't think that Murray can beat St. Mary's. Murray is pretty much a 1 man show and they are small and extremely skinny. When I flipped them on last night I thought I was watching NKU with the exception of the Canaan kid. I don't see Murray doing much in the tourney if they make it.

$20 bet...I'll even give you 2:1...bet is, if they lose in the OVC tourney, and make the NCAA tourney, you owe me $20...if they lose in the OVC tourney and don't make the NCAA tourney, I owe you $40?
If they win the OVC tourney, bet is off.
I actually bet someone on here a few years ago, and they actually sent me a $20 bill in the mail...I was shocked.

That's not how they define lock. Lock is defined as being in the bracket even if you lose the rest of your games...that's how you become a lock.

OK, I'll take the bet (hoping you're right, because I'm a big Murray State fan) on the condition that you take the following bet (which is actually a great bet for you given where you stand already):
If Murray State loses three or more of its remaining regular season games (4 or more total losses) and then loses in the OVC Tournament, they will not make the NCAA Tournament. I will lay 10 to 1 on it. Thus, I am betting 100 to your 10 that Murray will not make the NCAA Tournament with five losses. No action (on this bet) if Murray wins the OVC Tournament or finishes the regular season with 3 or fewer losses.
Essentially, I am willing to give you 10 to 1 odds that Murray is NOT a real lock.

No usually I am borderline mentally handicapped but this one is to easy to be dumb. Look they play in the OVC and if they lose say 4 more games that will be some major bad loses. They would not be invited. It's just the way it works. So in all honesty I feel they will not lose 4 more games and I feel pretty confident they will make the tourney but to say they are a lock if they lost out is asinine.

I think the guys at the bubble watch said that if Xavier lost to SLU, they were out. That's ridiculous. It's one thing to say that you don't think a team is good enough to get the wins they need. It's another to say they're out no matter what. They were saying the latter. No one can make definitive statements about locks with this much left to play. I think Murray has SOME margin for error, but not so much that they'll get in if they lose all their remaining games. If the people at the bubble watch are saying that, I'd stop listening to them.
I believe it was 1997 when Murray finished the season with three losses, and was ranked in the top 25 and earned a #9 seed. They ended up getting squashed in the first round.
Ivan Aska is also a good player, but he hasn't been the same since he broke his hand in the middle of the year. They've got some other guys that can play too. In the last few games, it's been all Canaan. I don't think it's quite to the level of the Davidson team where it was Stephan Curry and a bunch of other guys standing around watching. They've got other players that can and do contribute. Just not so much lately for some reason.
What's crazy is that they actually appeared to be far more talented a year ago. They returned pretty much everyone from the team that won against Vanderbilt, and finished the regular season with just three or four losses. Then last year, they just fell way short for some reason. Then they lost most of their good players, as well as their head coach. I don't see them doing a whole lot in the NCAA Tournament, but for a team that wasn't picked to win the OVC, and I don't think many thought they'd do much better than third (well, no one except GO).
According to this, they're a LOCK right now:
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bubblewatch
This is full of idiots then. There is absolutely no way in heck that Murray St could lose every game from here on out and still make the tournament.

Uh that would only be 3 more games. They have to play 2 more road games, a game against St. Mary's and the OVC tourney. I hope they make it because I like Murray but you watch if the big wigs get a chance they would love to have a reason to screw Murray to get a 9-9 team in from the Big East or Big 10.

Exactly. You mentioned earlier in this thread that they were a lock according to Espn. Then you told me to start my own bracket. That was really my point exactly. These bimbo's throwing around locks on a team like Murray St. are clueless. History tells us that if you are not in a power conference you have little margin for error. The OVC is rated 21 in strength of conference and if they have a team with 4 or 5 loses that does not win the conference tourney they will not send 2 teams. It's just reality. Murray has a 55 RPI right now. If they lose to St. Mary's, drop a game at Tennessee State and then lose in the conference tourney they will have an RPI in the 70's. That would not be good. With that said I think Murray will roll so this should be a pointless thread.
