View Full Version : Jim Rome Rips Cronin

Jim Rome's discussion today of the fight was that although Holloway should not have been running his mouth, and he and Lyons should not have been on the floor, he said that 6 game suspension for Gates and Moudj was a joke, and the height of hypocracy considering Cronin's commentary immediately following the game. He said he was excited when hearing Cronin's commentary about seeing who is on the team, etc.etc., because Rome said "finally a guy who gets it" and then the next day the bogus suspension. He said Gates should have been gone for the rest of the year. Rome also said that if the Xavier suspension of Holloway was light, it was probably because they watched what UC did to Gates and thought "Well if they aren't doing anything why should we?"

It was kind of refreshing to hear someone make an accurate priority of physical violence being worse than talking and "inappropriate" use of the word "ganstas".

I sincerely hope that our suspensions were not based even a little on what UC did or did not do.

Otherwise, I agree with him (except for believing what Cronin was dishing out Saturday night. That was clearly nonsense as it was happening and I'm still in disbelief over how many people thought he was sincere.)

We'll never know, but in my heart, I know they aren't.

Once again, Cronin was caught with his foot in his mouth. Either his post-game statement was total BS just to made himself look good, or that the UC AD/president was not backing him up for more severe penalty. Six games.....really? Nancy should be gone for at least 10 games, if not kicked out of the team entirely.

I have spent a good amount of my career assessing the believability of witnesses. I have to say, Cronin came across as genuine. I think that's because in the heat of the moment he truly believed what he was saying. But a day later, he has convinced himself that XU started it all, and therefore has minimized the reprehensibility of his players' conduct.

UC's suspensions are joke. Unfortunately, it's par for the course with them.

Well, then I guess I'd be a better judge of people than you because I didn't believe one word he was saying and it turns out I was right. Some people are just really convincing liars - even if it is to themselves.

Be that as it may, his failure to levy the appropriate punishment is still a failure, irrespective of whether his initial words were genuine. My impression was that he was simply in damage-control mode, saying what he thought necessary at the moment when most ears were listening. It's a somewhat akin (though of completely lesser moral gravity) to the Pakistani ISI promising the United States that they're on our side in fighting terrorism, when in actuality they tolerate (if not condone) it. At the end of the day, they don't do the right thing. Who cares whether statements are genuine. I hate to be cliche, but actions speak louder than words ...

This is a good nuance you raise, and it should be something that everyone considers. I'm not sure if UC has been as specific about their decision making process as Xavier was yesterday.

Maybe you are. Although 1 is a pretty small sample size.

You won't hear an argument from me. I wasn't trying to defend him. If anything, I was trying to defend those (like me) who actually gave him credit for a few moments in time.

Mick said all the right things post game.

Many applauded his comments....both local and national media.

But when he and the UC administration had to back it up, they didn't.

10 games minimum for Gates.

You cant sucker punch someone who was going in to break things up and only get 6 games. ?

Cronin said the right things because it was in his own best interest to do so. That's the way it works with Mick.

Man, today is turning out worse than Saturday. People I can't stand (Jim Rome, Skip Bayless) are the ones echoing some of my opinions on the manner. Wow, that's depressing.

Mick was already upset about his teams performance losing to X by 23 points so it was very easy for him to make an impassioned speech throwing his players under the bus before he accumulated all of the facts. Mack didn't look good because he was not willing to go off on his team before he accumulated all the facts. Xavier waited until they knew what the facts were before they addressed the issue in detail and then acted accordingly. This is not a case of one upmanship and penalties should not be based in any way on what UC does. Each case should be evaluated independently and penalties handed out accordingly. I am totally against trash talk in sports, but, there is a big difference in trash talk and a bad choice of words and physical assault. Tu may have characterised himself as a gangster, but, there is no evidence that he is a gangster either on or off the court.

I believe MicK was sincere when he spoke. He just spoke without thinking first and getting all the facts. He then had to backtrack.

I laugh sardonically today because little Mickey just can stay away from dissing the A-10 and pumping up the Big East.

His press conference today included the tidbit that the officials were assigned by the A-10 only because the past system of assigning refs to the game had been "discarded" and the Big East had no involvement. He said that if there had been Big East officials there, that it never would have gotten to a fight because it would have been controlled better. All of this, of course, turned out to be false.

Below is a story from the Sporting News this afternoon. The crew that worked was a "blended crew" whose members work both A-10 and Big Least games. They had also had experience in working NCAA Tournament games.

Mickey, just shut up and worry about your own issues, dude.

You know how you can tell Mick Cronin is bullcrapping you? His mouth is moving. Mick Cronin said what he did in order to keep his job and to save (some) face. That's it. It has nothing to do with anything else. He's a weasel and does things commensurate with that.

I hope the local media picks up on the hypocrisy. It seems they are determine to let UC off the hook.
