Apparently Recruiting Isn't For Recruiting Players - Only to "Look Good"

I’ve gotten several e-mails from UC fans concerned that Mick Cronin has not signed anyone so far in the early signing period.

Here’s Cronin’s explanation for why the Bearcats might not sign anyone until next spring. UC has two scholarships for next year.

“We don’t sign guys for no reason,” Cronin said. “Some people try to sign recruiting classes to make themselves look good. We’re trying to build teams. Part of our situation with all of our new guys is until they play a year in your program, you can’t evaluate what you think you need. We took a run at a few guys early. We’re definitely looking at a big guy. It’s just for us some of the big guys we’re recruiting decided to sign late. There’s still a chance we might sign one guy early, but he might not sign early. He still hasn’t decided. You can’t control that. We’ve been very selective about who we give scholarship offers to because we have 11 guys returning. With Shaquille Thomas (sitting out), if you redshirt one of these guys you already have two freshmen coming in next year.”

Those comments were a crock of shit. He just didnt find anyone stupid enough to commit to uc. Nice try Mickey....

Everything that comes out of his mouth is a rationalization/justification for something. I dislike him more and more every day. I do not think a lot of UC fans are all that enamored with him either. He did a pretty good job coaching last year and instead of commenting on a good season and looking forward to this season, he has to comment about how they still are not getting enough press, a revamped (ahem...weaker) Big East would be the best thing for them, and how a lot of coaches only recruit the early signing period to "look good". This guy sounds dumber by the day. He's better off saying something like "we are involved with a number of recruits that haven't made their final decisions yet" or not comment at all than spew the shit he does.

If your really look at what UC did last year, they had most of their Big East wins against the bottom feeders of the conference. They had maybe 2-3 good wins in the Big East. Yes, they did paste us, but overall it wasn't an overwheming year.

I personally think if UC struggles in the Big east this year, he's going to catch a lot of heat. I've spoken with several UC fans who are pissed about the OOC schedule.

Mick Cronin is a piker when compared to Gary Barnett. What he said was unbelievable under any circumstances. Cronin might not be the best PR man. I accept that. But I do give him credit for bringing and absolutely moribund program back from the dead. Let's hope we 'look good' in the Crosstown Shootout this year. I don't want to go through another season being second in town to them. We did that for far too many years, and it would be so easy for the media to relegate us to there scrap heap if we lose two in a row. :mad:

Funny thing is, Cronin did have a 6'9" PF committed, Devon Scott (now a Dayton commit) but he decommitted when it became obvious Cronin was ignoring him. Why did he ignore him? Because he was making a huge run for AJ Hammons...to make his recruiting class look good.

Cronin has never been wrong or made an error in any way. Just ask him.
