I believe he is going to be a Junior this year at Akron and it will be his first year in the lineup for the Zips.
Opening this thread to keep tabs on him and I'll update it throughout the year. I like to root on former X players and maybe you do to.
Anyways, I couldn't find any season previews for the team, so I'm not sure how involved he will be and how much playing time he will command. If I do, I'll update you.
I'm sure you are all pretty anxious about it.

If I had to guess, I'd say he'll be a nice role player. Maybe 22 minutes a game and 7ppg.

2011-2012 Akron Zips Basketball Preview
Akron Zips - Mid-American Conference (MAC)
2010-11: 23-13, 9-7
2010-11 postseason: NCAA
Coach: Keith Dambrot (162-75 at Akron, 270-145 overall)
Akron is rarely the same team in November as they are in March. This is a team that has been to the Mid-American Conference Championship game five times in a row. That was the case during the 2010-2011 campaign as the Zips struggled early in conference play, but Coach Keith Dambrot once again had his team ready to play down the stretch. The result was an average finish in conference play, but a great run through the conference tournament that resulted in an NCAA Tournament berth.
Who’s Out:
Again it may take some time for the Zips to adjust as they lose starters Steve McNees and Darryl Roberts, as well as sixth man Brett McKnight. McNees was the point guard who did a superb job running the offense and leading the defense. He was a decent scorer with most of his shots coming from beyond the arc. When he got into the paint, he would look for one of his teammates instead of finishing himself. Roberts was a do-it-all wing player who averaged 8.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists last season. Despite his ability to do a lot of things, Roberts was a great pure shooter. McKnight, who has been at Akron for seemingly the last decade or so, finished off his collegiate career as the Zips second leading scorer. Mike Bardo provided some much needed depth and Dakotah Euton could have seen some more minutes had he opted to stick around.
Who’s In:
Chauncey Gilliam, a transfer from UMBC, and Brian Walsh, a transfer from Xavier, highlight the group of newcomers. Gilliam is a big 6-5 wing who had a ton of success during his two years with the Retrievers. He will be a great small forward in the MAC. He can attack the basket, hit the glass and play pretty good defense. He likes to shoot from long range and does it quite well. At Akron everybody seems to shoot well from beyond the arc, so he may be inclined to work on that dynamic of his game even more. However, he will also use his size to attack the basket and that will earn him a starting job right away. Walsh has less experience after suffering through some injuries at Xavier. He is a good shooter and should be able to provide a spark off the bench during his sophomore season.
Nick Harney highlights the group of incoming freshmen. The 6-7 small forward would likely be starting if it were not for Gilliam. Either way, he is a great talent. Due to his size and wingspan, Harney could also spend some time at the four spot. He lacks the strength to do that against some opponents, but Coach Dambrot will want to get him in the game as much as possible. Demetrius Treadwell will add more depth in the frontcourt. Adedeji Ibitayo and Blake Justice will look for minutes on the perimeter. Ibitayo is a versatile player who will emerge as a superb defender because of his wingspan. Justice is pretty much a pure shooter at this point in his career.

He would have gotten plenty of minutes last year. He certainly would have helped a helluva lot more than Jay Canty.

Akron got a big road win against the SEC. Brian Walsh led Arkon in minutes and scoring off the bench. I am glad to see him getting playing time and hope he has a great season.
He outscored the two guards that started, and his 1-2 from three point range looks pretty good compared to the rest of the team going 1-8. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get even more playing time if he keeps it up. Go Brian!
Actually watched the entire second half of the game.
Can't help but pull for Akron to win that conference.
Brian saw the writing on the wall here and he quietly moved on. I'll continue to root for him.
I never remember him playing like that when he did get in the game for X, but that is likely because he was coming in the game cold. He really looked confident, by his senior year he could be a name in the MAC.

Walsh put in 14 pts in a 95-65 win over Hiram. Yeh, Hiram? WTF?
Anyways:
23 minutes
14 pts (5-8 from the field including 2-4 from 3pt land) (2-2 from the line)
5 boards
2 assists
1 steal
Brett McClanahan is their SR starting shooting guard and has struggled mightily. I wonder if Walsh will eventually take over his spot if the struggles continue.

just found this article about coaches leaving schools, which references Walsh towards the end saying how he was upset when Miller left and that he didn't have a good relationship with Mack.
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/s_772836.html
Brian Walsh signed with Xavier following a standout basketball career at Moon. When Coach Sean Miller left Xavier for Arizona, Walsh tried to stick it out before transferring to Akron.
"When I signed with Xavier, Coach Miller signed a (long-term) extension. He came to the house and he said, 'I'll be here for all four of Brian's years,' " said Walsh, a sophomore. "He got offered a great opportunity at Arizona, which bettered his family, so I can't be too upset about that. What I learned is, college basketball is more than a game, it's a business. If I could do it all over again, I might change where I went."
Overlooked in selecting a college is not only the athlete's choice of schools, but his relationship and comfort level with his coach. Walsh said he didn't have the same relationship with Xavier's new coach, Chris Mack, that he did with Miller, or that he now has with Akron coach Keith Dambrot.
"It was a weird feeling when Coach Miller left," Walsh said. "He took all the recruiters with him. Coach Mack stayed, but he wasn't really my recruiter, so I didn't have that good of a relationship.
"I'm just happy that I'm at Akron. I love Coach (Dambrot), and we have a really good relationship. That's what was missing when I left Xavier. It's humbled me a lot. It's also driven me. It makes me want to work harder, because I felt like I got snubbed by my old school."
Brian obviously had challenges due to lots of other talent on the roster and getting hurt, but I wonder if things would have been different for him had Miller stuck around. I'm not going to call out Miller for promising what he did to Brian because I'm sure every coach in the country tells their recruits the same thing. But it is tough for kids to understand the business side of the sport when they are still in high school or Freshmen in college.

Walsh has hung on to his starting SG role for Akron.
Averaging:
8.4 pts
3.2 rebounds
1.1 assists
Shooting 55% from 3-point land. (22-40)

Too bad Brian Walsh left XU. Last year he would have gotten a lot of minutes with the injuries we had. This year he would have lended a lot of extra 3 point ammo.
Walsh led the MAC in 3 point FG percentage this year I believe at 45.7%. I know he was Akron's team leader in 3 pointers. XU could have used some of that.
I thought he had potential to be a really good role player for XU. I'm sorry he left.

When he transferred, I thought Walsh made a good decision. He was already low man on the depth chart and we had Martin and Canty coming in. Well, Canty didn't work out and Martin hasn't produced much so far.
According to an article I read, he left after Mack told him he wouldn't be playing much in the future. I agreed with that assessment at the time. But knowing what we know now, he'd be getting some PT had he stayed.

I think he left based on the anticipation that Martin and/or Canty would be ahead of him on the depth chart. IMHO, he would be ahead of Martin at this point. Would he be starting? No. But I think he'd be getting some minutes.
That said, based on the info we had at the time, he made a correct decision.

I think Justin could average 8 and 3 in his 4th year at Akron as well. Brian Walsh is not very good and he would not have helped this Xavier team.

Brian Walsh is still crappy, playing at Akron, and would still not help this team much.
Is this why this thread was resurrected? To say how Walsh still wouldn't be getting playing time? If Justin Martin is the 7th or 8th man on THIS Xavier team, which is what he was in the exhibition on Saturday, Walsh would be even deeper.
It's great to bring these threads back from the dead so we can blast the kid some more. Nice work.

No, I don't think that's right. He sat out a year and lost a year of eligibility in the process. He played a few games his first year at X and then took a medical redshirt. He barely played his redshirt freshman year. He sat out the next year as a transfer and lost his sophomore year. Last year he was a junior. This year, he's a senior, and he would still be a senior if he had stayed at X.

After medical redshirting his freshman year, he joined Mark Lyons' class (which Redford later joined after his own injury). Now Walsh may or may not be eligible next year, seeing as he is in fifth year of college. Usually players have to get a waiver to get a sixth year if they haven't exhausted their playing eligibility.
