Going to the new Nets arena. I would have liked Pittsburgh, but basketball and NYC go pretty well together.

Despite my awful memory of being there for the Duke game, and Jersey in general, I'll take this over AC. NYC trips are always fun. But seriously, is there a worse state for Xavier to play basketball in than New Jersey? Man that state blows.

Different arena. The Izod Center was horrible in every way (including the result). The Nets arena will be in Brooklyn.

Probably. On the other hand, getting from Cincinnati/Dayton/St. Louis to NYC is a lot more convenient than those locales to Atlantic City, so maybe more folks will travel from the league's western outposts?
Well that's awesome that it's going to be in Brooklyn. This is a major upgrade for the A10, even though there will be lots of empty seats. My only fear is that Fordham will have a major home court advantage, with the thunder of the entire metropolitan area behind them.

I love this deal for a lot of reasons. Conference realignment could make me love this deal even more. Who knows if 3, 4, or 5 years from now we are playing in a "new" version of the A-10 with some of those non football big east schools like Providence, St. Johns, ect. That would make this move into the New York market a slam dunk.
Also, Scott Van Pelt just called this A-10/Barclays deal a "stroke of genius" from the conference.
Awesome stuff

Per Wash Post.....
Jay-Z: Brooklyn Nets to debut at Barclays Center in 2012
In a move that just about everyone in basketball anticipated, New Jersey Nets part-owner and hip-hop mogul Jay-Z announced the team will officially change its name to the Brooklyn Nets for the 2012-13 season.
The Nets will relocate to Brooklyn’s new Barclays Center, which will fittingly be christened by one or a series of performances from Jay-Z himself in late September of next year.
The New York Daily News reported the concert series will include eight performances and that the rapper’s wife, Beyoncé — currently pregnant with the couple’s first child — will likely join him on stage for at least one of the shows.
Jay-Z even took a slight dig at LeBron James — a player who the Nets tried but failed to land last summer — when he pondered the number of performances.
“Maybe one, maybe two, maybe three — I sound like LeBron,” he quipped in reference to James’ much ballyhooed NBA titles prediction upon joining the Miami Heat.
The franchise — owned by Russian billionaire and new Right Choice party leader Mikhail Prokhorov — is already marketing $15,400 all-access passes to the area that include courtside seats for 44 games along with admittance to clubs, free food and first priority on tickets to other events at the arena.

There's no guarantee that the ACC would have access to Madison Square Garden in the future, so that's why they were looking into the Barclays Center. I gotta imagine that any facility fees being paid to rent out the new arena will be steeper than Boredwalk Hall, though.

The ACC plays their tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina. It's population in 2010 was 269,666.
I mean basketball fans usually go to their conference tournament because they want to see good basketball. Fans of the A-10 usually bitch about how far it is, or get excited because there are things to do OTHER then watch basketball.
Seriously it's a funny argument to make that people will be fired up to go to Brooklyn. Why? Because it's Brooklyn. Who cares about the basketball? It sucks anyway, right?

I don't see how that's relevant. We aren't the ACC. Even if that was relevant, Greensboro NC is within an easy drive of several huge ACC programs.

Fans travel to see good hoops, but will travel better when the destination has some added value. NYC has a tad more added value than Pittsburgh.

Have you ever been to New York City? If not, it's more fun than Pittsburgh, so don't be so quick to poo poo Brooklyn.

That's your argument? We aren't the ACC? Well no shit. In case you haven't noticed and judging by the responses you haven't, Pittsburgh is an easy drive to the two biggest A-10 programs.
Fans travel to see good hoops, but will travel better when the destination has some added value. NYC has a tad more added value than Pittsburgh.
Nope, fans generally go to watch good hoops. I have yet to read any response from a fan from an A-10 school that says it doesn't matter where the tournament is, because what matters is the basketball. Just the fact we are going to Brooklyn shows the A-10 cares more about what the "added value" is then the actual hoops. If not, there would be no need to move it to Brooklyn.
I mean the tournament has been in Atlantic City. The only reason people wouldn't like it would be they don't like to gamble. It's not like there wasn't "added value." It's just personal perference and you aren't going to please everyone. In the end, the basketball is the selling point.
Have you ever been to New York City? If not, it's more fun than Pittsburgh, so don't be so quick to poo poo Brooklyn.
Yes, I have been to Brooklyn. I have been there when there wasn't basketball. But let's not say Brooklyn is Vegas.
What are you going to do in Brooklyn if you get tickets to the first session? The Brooklyn Museum is only open during the session. You going to go to bars? Yeah, they don't have those in other cities.
If I were you (God forbid) I would want the tourney in DC before I'd want it in Pissburgh.
Well here's another awesome analysis. Of course I would love to have it in DC. But that's not going to happen. Good point though.

It was played in Tampa. Tampa, Florida.
I mean the ACC was looking to hold their tournament in Brooklyn. Who do you think would come closer to selling out the arena? A-10 fans, or fans of the ACC?
Especially an ACC with Syracuse and Pitt?
Think that might be some good basketball? I doubt fans from Pitt would be excited to go to Brooklyn because Brooklyn is so much more exciting then Pittsburgh. They might be interested in watching excellent basketball. Just a guess.

Why would anyone travel to Pitt? Dayton might take 1500 people. Xavier might take 1500 people. When Dayton flames out in the quarters, that leaves 1500 total fans, because no one else is bringing anyone other than family and bands. Pitt is too far to expect much of a Xavier or Dayton contingent. Hell, even in Cincinnati the attendance was pretty weak.

The ACC can hold the tournament in a town of less then 3000,000 people. Oh wait it does.
The argument was it does well because it was a short drive to many programs. I merely pointed out they went to Tampa and had over 22,000 people attend. Tampa is not really close to any ACC programs. And the ones that are close, don't care about basketball.
The A-10 used to have it's tournament within a two hour drive of four programs. No one came. They only came when it was in Ohio. Somehow Pittsburgh is the same distance as Philadelphia and won't come. But somehow if we market it well, people ill travel all the way to Brooklyn.

I personally don't give a shit if DC or 20,000 other people are there or not. I don't attend conference tournaments to make the league look good, or to "watch great basketball". I go to watch Xavier win and to have a good time in the host city.
I can't wait to see my Muskies win the A-10 tourney in the greatest city in the world, NYC.
And it looks like I can take the R train there directly from my apartment in the Financial District. It might take all of 15 minutes.
Well there you have it. Xeus LIVES in NYC. No wonder he has such a hard on. And apparently he can only have a good time in NYC. Screw this other places, he can take the R Train!
And actually the conference DOES give a shit if no one else shows up but you. They need to make money. I'd be interested to see their books after the first one.
I really think it's funny that some of you guys think this is a big time move, then you don;'t care if people don't come, have no idea how seating works at these actual big time tournament, and then simply ignore the facts...facts of attendance in smaller cities that host big time tournaments, and facts about attendance in the A-10 tournament in any city not in Ohio.
Take the R Train! 15 minutes!
Sorry. Believe it or not I was eating a homemade burrito. (shredded beef - I have a great crockpot recipe if anyone is interested...)

Ummm...what? you said you would not go to Pittsburgh for the A-10 tournament. But you MIGHT go if that same tournament was played in Brooklyn. And your argument is you would go to Idaho to watch Xavier in the Final Four.
And my analogy of Pitt and SBU was far fetched? Okay Kansas.
My excuse is apparently I don't live in NYC and there is no R Train to take me from the Financial District to anywhere I want in the greatest city.
Pitt fans will travel to watch good basketball. The ACC plays good basketball. Pitt isn't going back to NYC after joining the ACC. At least not until 2017, unless the ACC can get out Greensboro.
I really don;t think it's so hard to figure out...The ACC plays in no where North Carolina and sells out. They market good basketball. Hell they don't even market it really.
The A-10 fans get excited about going to Brooklyn. Hell some people are so excited they MIGHT go. It's not because of A-10 basketball....it's because they can ride the R Train.
Sad.

Does the Diamond Classic have an attendance problem? Do you think people want to go there because they get to watch good basketball around Christmas or Thanksgiving while sitting on the beach? At the same time it's at the beginning of the season?
That's another perfect example of our non attending conference tournament in the second week of March.

The cost of staying in NYC will at least double compared to staying in AC. The A10 tried AC because the location had just a little bit more going on besides basketball. And PMI, just because Duke schooled us in NJ doesn't mean the state sucks. Afterall, MD has Elkton on one side and Cumberland on the other. Maybe we could play the tourney in Perryville.

The cost won't double. Do your homework and you"ll be able to find comparable accommodations for similar rates.
AC can't even hold NYC's jock when it comes to having more things going on besides basketball. Other than my spectacular bachelor party in AC in 2010, there isn't much going on there.

That my boy, is just for lodging. Wait until you see the cost of a good meal there. Also, I never compared AC to NYC, I just said that the A10 tried AC as opposed to Philly or other locations because of the proximately of casinos with gambling and late night entertainment.

Not sure I follow your logic here. I know Maryland has its boring parts, but let's look at Jersey for what it truly is. Aside from the fact that Xavier NEVER wins important games in that miserable state, New Jersey is still, and will always be the cesspool of America. I don't mean to offend anyone by that, but I have to call it as I see it, and I see that god-forsaken piss-hole, where people aren't even allowed to pump there own gas so as to let their own mutant species feel like they have a purpose in this world, as not only a poor place for Xavier to play, but a poor place for people to settle. But fear not, the A10 tournament is in the real city, not New Jersey. I'm not just talking shit for what it's worth. Being an Italian-American, I obviously have plenty of family from Jersey. It sucks raunchy balls, and in all likelihood, always will.

There is no mysterious logic here little man. Have you ever been to Elkton or Cumberland? Talk about cess pools, these lovely towns seem to be right up your alley. Talk about skid marks. I bet your relatives from NJ would bitch slap you if you talked your shit to them. You must really believe the Jersey shore represents the people of the state. My local gas station is owned by an Italian American and he does indeed, pump my gas. So according to you, it gives a mutant species a purpose in this world. Nice. I am sure your relatives are proud of you.

Dude, go defend Jersey to someone whose mind you have a chance of changing. I've spent way too much time there in way too many parts not to see how awful it is. Yes, I've been to both Cumberland and Elkton. Cumberland would suck to live in, no doubt. Elkton is hands down the most bizarre town I've ever seen in my life. I've often thought about writing a creepy horror novel based out of that town. When the common man thinks of Maryland, neither of those two shit holes come to mind. Not ever. The triangle of DC, Baltimore (the least of the three) and Annapolis are what most people think of, and then maybe other towns on the bay and eastern shore. I'm from Montgomery County. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montgomery_County,_Maryland Most people I know from my part of town have never been to Cumberland, other than passing through, and have never heard of Elkton, other than me describing the insanity I've personally experienced there.
I get it. You're probably from Jersey. I'm very sorry for you. We both can see that you haven't turned out the way any of us would've liked. But defending it only digs your hole deeper. Anyone who's even passed through that ass-backwards state can see it too. It blows. It's seriously illegal to pump your own gas there. It's basically an entire state of Philadelphia filth. Keep defending it if it makes you feel better, or if it makes your fat four-foot guido queen proud, I don't care. But don't try and convince anyone that Cumberland and Elkton represent Maryland. The Jersey Shore represents Jersey a hell of a lot more than those two off the radar places represent MD.

I looked at some hotel prices as a quick comparison and this was more than true. I too have traveled extensively for many years on the company dime so I do know something about hotel rates in major cities versus small cities. Yes, I am from NJ and Tony pumps my gas for me and his guidette (guido is male dummy) wife would kick your ass for laughs. Just like parts of MD (Annapolis) are quaint, so are parts of NJ. Why do you think they call it the Garden State? Oh well, enough arguing with an idiot, bring on the basketball season.

If I go to Brooklyn I will definitely be staying with someone up there rather than buying a room. When it comes to everything else (food, drinks, etc.) New York is very expensive, but living in DC, it's nothing I'm not used to. Per Carroll Gardens Patch.....
A Sneak Peek Inside Barclays Center
***article page includes video & pix...
A tour of the future home of the Brooklyn Nets yields some surprising elements—both large and small.
What seemed like a dream, then an idea and finally a proposed plan of action that pitted a small group of determined residents against a mega-developer in a bitter battle for the future of a borough, is now here.
The Barclays Center has risen.
With steel installation 97 percent complete, the future home of Brooklyn's first major league professional sports team since Walter O'Malley swept away the Dodgers in 1957 is today a brick and mortar reality.
A tour Friday of the still very active construction site revealed not just the biggest elements of the basketball arena and events center, but also smaller, yet vitally important, details as well.
That list includes ground floor retail with street access to Flatbush Avenue, the first "green roof" proposed for an MTA subway entrance and Ipe wood benches lining the plaza of Barclays Center.
And then there is the colossal: 18,000 seats for basketball games in a "tight bowl" configuration meant to provide a sense of being on top of the action—even in the highest and cheapest rows.
"There are no bad seats in this arena," said spokesman Barry Baum of the Brooklyn Nets, the team that will play its first preseason game of the 2012-13 season here in October.
Over it all, a massive steel roof temporarily held up by three shoring towers was 80 percent complete as of last week, according to Forest City Ratner senior vice president and deputy director of construction Linda Chiarelli.
In the vaulting main entrance, glass panels look out to the bustling traffic at the intersection of Atlantic, Flatbush and Fourth avenues, with the beginnings of an 80-foot cantilever roof beginning to take form.
Outside, despite the declared bankruptcy last December of the Indiana makers of Barclay Centers' aged steel exterior, work on the panels enclosing the arena is expected to be complete by March, Chiarelli said.
But for area motorists, what is perhaps most notable at the enormous construction site is what is not here—namely, a surplus of parking spaces.
With almost 20,000 capacity for events at the arena, Chiarelli confirmed only 1,100 spaces planned for the block bounded by Pacific and Dean streets and Carlton and Vanderbilt avenues.
That has some residents and elected officials concerned about a flood of cars taking up valuable street parking space in the blocks around Barclays Center.
Baum said area parking garages would be able to pick up the slack—with the rest of Barclays Center visitors coming by commuter train and through a subway entrance that will be only 350 feet from the platform to the arena's entrance.
"We expect most of our fans to come on the train," Baum said.

Like I said before, sounds pricey to me compared to AC. Can't wait to see the attendance from outside of NYC.

More importantly... we still don't have this mysterious taco recipe from Xeus?

I really do have a great crockpot recipe for shredded beef tacos (you can also do it with chicken), but I might be accused of making the board girly ;) Still, if you want it let me know.

What's girly about beef tacos?

I meant that talking about recipes could be construed as girly.

Not if the recipes are for something as manly as beef tacos!
New Jersey is so awesome.

Easy flight for me to JFK from Charlotte....alot easier and actually alot cheaper than AC. And while NYC hotels are generally expensive, thre are good deals to be had. There are even a few right in downtown BKLN that would offer a great savings over Manhattan.

Power of X, most people going to AC fly into Philly, another USAIRWAYS hub, a take the hour drive on the AC Espressway. If you find any good hotel deals in NYC, please pass the info along. Thanks for the compliment PMI, Maryland is awesome too.
How come I am down to one red box?

Not sure of bkln hotels, but will look into it. For any NYC trip over a weekend always look at the Jersey City waterfront. There is a Hyatt, Westin, Double Tree, Embassy, Candlewood...always good rates on the weekend as rooms are free with the area financial offices closed on the weekend. Then an easy PATH trip into the city. Or take the light rail to Hoboken and eat/drink/shop on Washington st. for the day.

He said any NYC deals. I don't think we will be looking up this thread in a year as the authority on where to stay for the tourney. BTW, I spent 2+ years in the 'Boken while working in midtown so ease up on the Jersey bashing.

Just got a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath condo in Ocean City for the A10 tourney, not a bad deal for $125 a night. Try to get a deal like that in the Big Apple. Now, all we have to do is get there!

SPV,
As U know...U won't find a deal like that in Brooklyn, NYC...
However, oc surely pales in comparison to "The City --- NYC"....

Luther, thanks for the link. Barclays is going to be sweet. Looks like a road trip next year. AC has always been convienient for me and OC is dry but a stones throw from Sommer's Point, Strathmere and plenty of taverns. I will spending some time in the AC Irish Pub.

Try the Hotel Le Jolie in Brooklyn. Stayed there last month. Excellent boutique-type hotel. Continental breakfast included.
