...with written permission from any male relative...including their sons.
So progressive of them. In 150 years or so, they'll be allowed to wear t-shirts!

It may seem absurd to Americans, but this is a tremendous step forward for women's rights in Saudi Arabia.

That really is an unbelievably positive step forward for that country. Congrats. Women unfortunately have very few rights in the Muslim culture, but this is a positive step by a large and influential country in the Middle East.

On a more serious note (from me; everyone else was serious in this thread already), some of the guys I work with have been spending some time in Saudi recently, and they have been told by the younger generation that they have been meeting with that change is definitely on the way in Saudi Arabia. The government knows that it's inevitable, but they are taking on the difficult task of trying to bring about change at a manageable pace. Apparently, there is a long tradition of Saudis with money moving to Europe and New York and blowing their money on hookers and blow (not sure where the problem is, but the Saudis think this is bad) when they encounter societies so different from theirs. The Saudis want to pace their changes to attempt to avoid the "preacher's daughter away at college" problem that all of us who have lived in a dorm have seen.

Nah, not quite yet.
With all due respect (which means that someone is about to get disrespected) to XUAB, Blobfan and other distaff members of this board......
The end of the country will come when they grant women the right of free speech. :D

So does the lady have to make her request to vote annually?

I thought they would allow women to drive first before letting them vote.

In certain specific locations within the Muslim world yes. I agree this is a very positive step for SA and women in the conservative areas of Islamic culture.

"Grantled" does sound like something the Saudis would make a woman do before she voted. Sounds like it hurts.
