Oh, wow. I am an admitted Sci-Fi geek, and have played more than an everage person's share of video games, and even some role playing games. (Can anyone else tell me what game features the Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord?)

I've never heard of this particular game, or the concept of "the fledgling spectator sport of pro gaming, which has struggled for years to be recognized as a real sport."

I think even these guys would find that nerdy.

One of the old Wizardry games back in the floppy disk days? Crusaders of the Dark Savant or earlier?

All the way earlier is what I was thinking. I was a big original Wizardry fan, and the next two. Not even sure what the Crusaders of the Dark Savant is, but you had the series correct.

Blizzard came out with a new version. My bother-in-law is hooked on it, as he was on the original when we were college roommates.

I think from an overall life productivity standpoint, I am fortunate that video games weren't multiplayer online when I was in college. I think the MMOs are cool, but I don't like playing with people I don't know. If it had been a thing when I was in college, it's pretty likely that I would be pretty addicted.

We had massive Super Nindendo NHL'92 tournaments and Super Tecmo Bowl tournaments instead.

These were the last couple of Wizardry games that expounded on the original. Pretty good stuff for when it came out. Sad thing is, I knew it was Wizardry immediately when I heard the Proving grounds of the mad overlord.

Correct, Starcraft II came out only recently (more than ten years after the original), and I'd say professional gaming and the televising of it as growing trends have been around for maybe five years.
