Good to see Tiger out there playing again. He is -2 and 6 strokes off the lead after the first day, but is hitting the ball very well.

I look forward to watching the young guns play with a healthy Tiger in the field.

Sould be a great few days of golf.

Why are so many people fans of Tiger? I acknowledge he is more talented than any living golfer, and has a strong work ethic. After giving him his due for those facts, I have felt for years that he is an arrogant, self-absorbed dude who has a terrible temper, rarely signs autographs, and is a notorious tightwad. He is widely known to be a lousy tipper and treats most people like crap. Hell, even his bro, Charles Barkley, says Tiger has dissed him for the past 2 years. Barkley now says that firing Stevie Williams is the last straw for him.
Welcome back? I gotta say I haven't missed him. BTW: check out his short presser on SC tonite...as usual, more arrogance from Woods.

Since when is arrogance a deterrent to being a great athlete and attracting fans? Exhibit A, Pete Rose. Demanding that a person who is great at one thing be a model citizen and conform to our preferred personal etiquette is a sure formula for disappointment.

How about Steve Williams, however. I am violating my pet peeve by even talking about it here, but he's sure managing to eclipse even his new employer will all the spouting off yesterday. I don't get how caddies are even in the mix for publicity. Shut up already.

You're right, athletes are not perfect and should not be held to that standard. However, Tiger is surly, mean and trite with fans and the press. I think expecting someone to be decent to people is not asking to much for anyone - athlete or otherwise. Tiger is not a decent person to fans, the press or most anyone as far as anyone can tell. At least Pete Rose, for all his faults, is decent to people and will actually carry a conversation with a fan.

I do agree with your assessment of Steve Williams, though.

Golf holds itself out to be a game of sportsmanship above all other games. I don't think a Pete Rose to Tiger Woods comparison is relevant at all.

I've never really liked Tiger. His domination of his sport was impressive, and I have nothing against that as an achievement. Early in Tiger's career, he was in a Nike ad that intimated that there are golf courses that wouldn't let Tiger Woods play because he is black. I never liked that, and I think it tainted my view of Tiger. I don't mind at all that other people are fans of his though. My criteria for being a fan of someone's are my own.

Tiger probably deserves the needling he's getting from Williams, because he did royally screw him it appears. But Williams should shut the hell up, because the win was about Adam Scott, not Steve Williams.

I can see why Tiger and Stevie parted on such nasty terms and frankly I'm amazed at how long they were able to stay together based on their collective egos. The interview with Stevie after the tourney yesterday was a joke.

Adam Scott played his ass off for 4 days and ran away with a WGC title in a 'major worthy' field. He shoots a lights out 65 yesterday and not once did I hear Stevie mention him during the interview. I was waiting for him to give Adam Scott all the credit, instead he told us how good of a frontrunner he is (speaking of himself).

Note to Stevie: Telling someone where to hit the ball and executing shots are two entirely different things. Get over yourself and try this next time "Adam was spectacular this week and I'm happy I was a part of it."

I don't care what Tiger is like as a person. I don't care what he says in his press conferences, to the fans, to his caddie, or to the whores on the street.

When he is playing well, it is fun to watch. With all the new guys that have come on to the scene the past 2 years, I want to see Tiger and his "A" game play with the next generation on tour. This is why I am a fan of Tiger Woods.

I am not asking the man to babysit my son, just want to see the guy return to form. The PGA tour will be even more exciting to watch on a regular basis.

Damn if this week's PGA isn't going to be telling.

If he starts pumping his tee shots left and right at the AAC, then good night Tiger. The rough in Atlanta can rip him up physically if he has to hack out of it too often. That and the heat, which, in fairness, everyone must face, will present a tough mental and physical challenge.

Frankly, I can't see him being in the running for it on Sunday afternoon.

So, in other words, if a guy is an exceptional athlete, but a total a**hole, you root for him to "return to form" and win more and more tournaments?
I prefer to root for underdogs and guys that are known to be good guys. There are a bunch of Pros on the tour who have a lot of class and treat us fans with respect.
Tiger has no class.

I prefer some of that "class" in persons I associate with.

But as a sports fan, I like to watch skill and achievement above all else. I know I get it mixed up some times in my own mind, but most of the time, I want to see athletic skill and strategy. Watching Woods play golf in his prime was a revelation, a pleasure. He was immune to pressure in the way of most mortals, and golfers. If you can't enjoy that 90-degree left turn putt at the Masters because Tiger is a douche some times, ok, but I don't have that problem.

I hated Rose's Charlie Hustle persona, but I still liked watching him do the hardest thing in sports, hitting a hard little ball thrown from 60-6 away.

OUCH!!! Somebody got their feelings hurt. This is starting to remind me of that South Park episode when it was Giant Douche vs. Turd Sandwich.

Although, when looking back on this thread, even though I'm a huge fan of golf in general and will love golf either way, I have to agree with nuts, Tiger being good is better for the game. It adds a certain level of entertainment when he is in contention. I would have liked to see how he would have done against Kuchar, Bradley, Donald, Simpson, etc. this year.

Is it racist to call someone black? Calling him an asshole: fine. Calling him a black asshole: racist?

If he gets canned it won't be the perceived racism; it will be his insistence on upstaging his player. Scott doesn't deserve this with the year he's had.
