DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke is investigating whether an NCAA recruiting rule was violated when coach Mike Krzyzewski reportedly offered a scholarship to a recruit during a summer tournament.

Forward Alex Poythress told CBSSports.com that Krzyzewski spoke to him earlier this week while he was in Orlando, Fla., for a tournament with his AAU team, the Georgia Stars, and offered him a scholarship.

NCAA rules prevent coaches from contacting recruits before they are finished playing in tournaments.

Duke spokesman Jon Jackson said in a statement Saturday that the school is gathering facts and that "proper adherence to NCAA bylaws has always been, and will continue to be, a cornerstone of Duke Athletics."

Poythress is a 6-foot-7 forward from Clarksville, Tenn. He is considered one of the nation's top high school seniors.

Wow. That is a violation?

C'mon, NCAA. While Calamari seems to get away with murder, K has a violation for trespassing after stepping half a shoe on someone's property.

yeah, this is so small, I don't think any thing major will happen to Duke and Coach K.

Most likely, they will receive a letter notifying them of the violation. That will be the extent of it.

He's had the success.

He has money.

He'll goes down into the books with an iconic standing.

At which point does crap like this, and the knowledge that the HC position requires so much stamina and groveling, does he finally say screw it.

Minor. Minor. Minor.

This is not a big violation by any means. Possibly a fine but I doubt anything else.

Like him or hate him, there's no denying that the guy can coach. His legacy will not be affected by this whatsoever.

At worst, they lose a recruiting day or two.

At some point, someone has to tell the NCAA to "GET REAL."

If their is one coach in the USA that I think is clean, (Other than C. Mack, of course.) it is Mike Krysewski. Over the years, he has run a super clean program. His players go to class, they comport themselves in an upstanding manner, they learn team basketball, and they graduate. Except the ones who, in recent yeas have opted out early for the NBA. Sometimes I wonder how guys like 'Calamari' can get away with it, and they find something like this to nail on Coach K.
Go Coach K
& of course,

GO MUSKIES!

Looks to me like Duke self-reported. Does Coach K not have to follow the rules? It's minor, of course, but if he violated a rule he violated a rule.

Don't forget that the NCAA is just enforcing rules that the schools put on themselves to keep each other in check. Most of these rules can probably be traced back to a few shady coaches and then the rest of the schools wrote legislation in a reactionary manner to try to counteract what the coaches were doing. There is a saying for when this happens in law, "tough cases make shitty laws". So while we rail against the NCAA, just remember the schools made most of these rules.

And this just proves, there is no program out there that doesn't break NCAA rules. If you show me a school that has reported 0 NCAA violations in a given year, I can show you a compliance department that is sweeping their coaches and staff behavior under the rug.

I wonder what the kid's chances of ending up on Duke's campus are now?

In all reality, this is so minor, it wouldn't even be mentioned had it been just about any other coach. But since it is the closest thing to resembling a blemish on Coach K's record, it will continue to be blown out of proportion.

Not really. The rules committee puts the rules in place. They consider (at least they day they do) input from the coaches, athletic directors and presidents, but it's not a democratic process.

The schools have an opportunity to reject a rule, but only if 75% of the membership decides to do so. The reality of the situation is that most people don't even read the minutes or the legislation that the rules committee passes.

Your average American citizens don't make the laws, nor do they read the legislation behind them. Same with the NCAA.
