I saw this on the other X board. It looks like Mike is one of many candidates for the A.D job at Illinois. Hopefully, Illinois hires somebody else.

I think we'll be okay with this.
They'll emphasize someone with football experience at a high level - that should keep the responses containing "what about his time at Akron" to a minimum.
BTW, they have a thread about Christon and a few guys slamming Xavier as compared to Illinois, until this guy - DaytonIllini - comes into the thread, professes to hate Xavier, and lays out a litany of reasons why Xavier probably could be regarded as good as or better than Illinois as a place to go to school and play.
The ignorance of some fans is almost amazing. And the entire notion of "BCS" is pure crap.

Anybody have any idea how his appointment as NCAA tourney chairman for next year plays into this? Would he have to remain at X to retain that or could he still be the chair if he changed jobs?
I have no idea, but would guess he'd have to remain at X. If that's the case I would have to think he wouldn't consider a move until after next year's tourney.

It seem to me that starting a job at a new school while working on the selection committee would be very difficult, let alone chairing it.

Not to go OT, but an Illini poster stated that Oden and Conley would have gone to Xavier if Matta didn't leave. This has been a pretty persistent rumor...I wonder how much truth is in it. How would history have changed if we had those two?

Oden would have pushed Cage but no foul would have been called since they would have been on the same team thus creating a really confusing situation for those involved in and watching the game.

Couldn't resist pushing that button, could ya Juice.
This thread is nominated for Fasted Thread OT for the 2011 Off Season.

If Bobinski goes to Illinois, either he or Gene Smith would be removed from the committee and someone else from the Atlantic Ten would take their place for the last two years.

A) Gene Smith is already off the committee.
B) It's not directly tied to conferences, per se.
C) With UCONN's Jeff Hathaway looking like he could be on borrowed time, I would guess there is a decent chance Mike could actually serve as Chairman this year.
D) I can't believe anyone would seriously think Mike would turn down what would have to amount to at least doubling his pay to remain on the committee. Given that he has been "involved" in numerous searches over the last few years, I can't believe being on the committee would get him to pass up a Big 10 AD job and a HUGE pay-raise.

I'd forgotten that last year was Gene Smith's final year, but they're not going to put someone from the Big Ten on there immediately afterwards. Chances are they'd replace him with soemone else from the Atlantic Ten. they've been kind of sensitive about that since 1999.
To be honest I can't think of an example where that's happened in basketball, but I can thinhk of several where it's happened in other sports, meaning a committee member left to take a different job, and someone from his old conference replaced him/her for the rest of their term.
...and I COMPLETELY agree. Maybe he'll take the Illinois job and maybe he won't, but I don't think his seat on the committee will weigh into it all that much.

I dont get Bobinski looking for other jobs at this point. He has to be in his early 50's.
Why not finish out your career at X and retire in 5-8 years ?
Just seems late to start over when he is in a great spot at X.

Let's face it. Bobo could get any AD job in the country if he wanted it. Hell, he could be the Baseball Commissioner or take Goodell's job.

Would have never happened in my opinion. With LN's coach involved, those two were going somewhere Big 6 and close to home.

Except for when a head coach does it, apparently.

I want to play the Illini. They have great fans. They rooted hard for us against Duke down in Atlanta and I was sitting in their section. Wonderful fans and great people.
I think they played us at a neutral downtown and then in Chicago. Great time for a home and home with them. I have much respect.
I am biased because of Atlanta, but those fans treated us well and we had a great time. For that I am forever grateful and I will pump up the Illini until the bitter end.
Bobinski is priceless and a class act. I pray that he never leaves. He is exceptional, in the top half of the top 1% by my calculations. I just made that up, but I will still stand by that account.

Mike's been at Xavier a long time. He's not Thad Matta or Sean Miller.

I think the evidence of his failed efforts the last few years would cause one to disagree with that sentiment.

Who has said Bobinski didn' turn the offers down? Also, there is a lot more to life than money. If Bobinski wanted more money at another school, he could have gotten that years ago, yet he is still at X. Some people value things more than just money. He makes a lot of money as it is. Not saying he will never leave, but money certainly does not buy happiness.

A lot of chatter coming out of Illinois that this thing could be coming to a head within the next 7 days.

You would have to pay me a sh*t load of money to live in Champaign, IL. There's nothing there, but I guess a lot of NCAA coaches and ADs do it. Get the big$$$, but live a small college towns.

I don't know about Champaign, IL, but a lot of small college towns are phenomenal places.
