ESPN.com - GA Tech to get 4 years probation (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/6769894/ncaa-places-georgia-tech-yellow-jackets-four-years-probation)
Both the football and basketball programs get dinged; the penalties are relatively minor in that their summer evaluation days were reduced and they also had a reduction in official recruiting visits. It does shed some light on why Paul Hewitt was fired back in the spring. They didn't lose any scholarships or face any postseason ban for the BB team.

Gregory must be pissed. He probably only took the Ga. Tech job because there would be 0 pressure to make the postseason once they were banned from it. He could permanently live in the fairy tale land of preseason championships. I could see his first press conference:
"It is a real shame that we aren't eligible for the post season. We have probably the best team in the ACC, too bad I won't get an opportunity to prove that on the court due to the restrictions. But trust me, once we are eligible you will see some serious postseason results. Until then take solace in these preseason and recruiting rankings."

I'm sure that they briefed Gregory quietly about what was going on at Georgia Tech; it's not as bad as it was at Ohio State when Thad Matta took over that program. The fact that Gregory would choose to go to a program facing sanctions instead of staying on a sinking ship (plane?) says volumes about the Dayton job.

Paul Hewitt was fired because he was an abysmal coach. Not because of probation looming. Lots of coaches keep their jobs when a program gets placed on probation.

Did you all see that Paul Hewitt was the head coach of our under 19 national team?
Who decided that? Paul Hewitt was the only guy available.

All hail mediocrity! Gregory coaching GaTech... Hewitt coaching the U-19 team.... This is WTF-thread material.

Here is a response from former G Tech football player Sean Bedford. http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/26443/former-gt-center-sean-bedford-responds
Kid has a point, vacating wins is one of the most pointless things I have ever heard of. The NCAA should reduce scholarships or impose financial damage, but taking away wins is futile imo.

The number of official vists was reduced from twelve to ten. They only have one senior on the team. That's not even a real punishment. It's a punishment for show, but does absolutely nothing to actually impair the team. Chances are they won't even come close to using the ten official visits that they're allowed to use.
If I receive a sanction that prohibits me from running more than fifteen miles a day, that's not really a penalty because I never come close to running that far anyway. That's kind of like what Georgia Tech got. Gregory won't even notice it.
