Always on the lookout for new, creative stuff, and it is becoming increasingly hard to find.

I really like The Suburbs by Arcade Fire (not a bad song in the bunch- and very eclectic with no derivative tunes) but that is now almost a year old. Johnny Marr has been playing with the Cribs recently. The Strokes have a new album out that is interesting.

Talk to me and let me know what is fresh. And, no, please no Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Despite his attempts to be a rock star, he's a better Nascar driver- barely.

Golfitup Cody got me into the band Dawes. It's pretty delicious. Kinda remind me of the band but like... newer and young. Good times. They got two records out, both good.

I've been relistening to the Alternative Routes record Good and Reckless and True again recently. It's an awesome overall listen. You most likely don't know who they are. Also, if you're into stuff known as alt-coutnry rock and roll, try Columbus-based Matthew Hoover's record Talking to Ghosts. I love it.

OH YEAH, and Tom Evanchuck. He's really really really good.

If rap is your thing...

Honestly, don't usually listen to much of it, but this one artist, is pretty sweet.

Childish Gambino.

go to iamdonald.com, and you can download all his music for free. Donald Glover is his real name. He's a comedian and a writer on NBC. He stars on the NBC show Community, and used to write for 30 Rock.

He's a little vulgar, but also has some good lyrics.

If you like the pop/electric sound of the 80's I'd recommend Adventures in Space and Time by The Apples in Stereo. It came out last year but it's still new to me.

Another one I'd recommend that came out last year is Intriguer by Crowded House.

Anthony da Costa. Young dude from NY. REALLY good singer/songwriter. Had the pleasure of opening for him in Cleveland. He is super good and has gotten really good reviews. Don't know who to compare him to. But spend the 10 spot on iTunes and buy his album Not Afraid Of Nothing (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/not-afraid-of-nothing/id331419953). For realsies. If you don't like it I'll make a video of myself punching myself in the face and I'll send it to you. It's got some really really good tracks on it. My faves are 'If You Want It', 'Love Is Not Enough', 'Maybe I Should Lie', 'I Am Way Too Much', and 'For A While'. Just buy the whole record, ya cheapskate. Sheesh. I am so sick of arguing. Why can't we just have a normal conversation anymore? I really don't think this is working out. Maybe we should take some time apart. It's not you, it's me... I don't like you.

For those of you who like the Southern rock, bluesy sound...think (North Mississippi All Stars) check out the Sheepdogs.

For straight rock and roll I think the new (newer) Foo Fighters album Wasting Light is strong as hell.

Despite your incoherent rambling about some narcissistic tendencies late in your original post, give me a heads up when you are playing or "opening" for someone again in Cleveburg.

I need a live music fix, since the last show I went to was to see the consumate musician Bruce Hornsby. Gawd I wish I could play piano like that dude.

My Morning Jacket isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I like their new CD Circuital. It takes a couple of listens, but they offer a variety of different sounds throughout the CD.

On a side note, MMJ is coming to Riverbend on August 17th. Whether you like their studio work or not, they are exceptional live and I would suggest anyone give them a chance live, especially if you have nothing better to do on a Wednesday night in August.

Toro y Moi.

He/they are going to be a MPMF this year in Sept and you all need to go to this show. Saw him/them last night here in Nashville and they straight up killed it. Best show I've been to in a while. Two albums are currently out, Causers of This and Underneath the Pine, get them both and you will not be disappointed.

Most won't say this is new, but R.E.M.'s Life's Rich Pageant has been remastered this year and should be part of everyone's library. Talk about a stellar album that rocks.

If you like acoustic-y stuff...

- (Right from Cold Spring KY) Daniel Martin Moore, In the cool of the day
- (One of the band's I've enjoyed more recently) The Civil Wars, Barton Hollow
- Jessica Lea Mayfield, Tell Me (go to her show, compliment her, and you might get lucky *wink* she's playing at MPMF)
- Ha Ha Tonka, Death of a Decade (more americana)

If you like awesome indie rock...

- Tapes 'n Tapes, Outside (These guys are great live BTW)
- Gomez, Whatever's on your mind
- Destroyer, Kaputt (from Dan Bejar, one of the songwriters in New Pornographers)
- Cake, Showroom of Compassion

If you like clean, songwriter pop...

- Adele, 21 (it just kind of sucks cuz it's getting over saturated.)
- Teddy Thompson, Bella (not as crazy as his dad, but still writes catchy pop tunes)
- The Feelies, Here Before (this would have been punk years ago, no longer)
- The Cars, Move Like This (only heard one song but loved it)

If you like heady, know it's good, but not sure why stuff...

- PJ Harvey, Let England Shake
- Kurt Elling, The Gate (gotta have one jazz album here)
- Noah and the Whale, Last Night on Earth
- The High Llamas, Talahomi Way

I also really dig that newer band from England, The Joy Formidable, who will also be playing at MPMF in September. Lots of good music this year.

Was helping my pal cut up his Irish band's live album at a local recording studio and as the entire disc was finishing we stepped into an awesome hot dog and music bar called The Happy Dog for a Guiness and a whiskey and saw this girl performing. Wonderful, unique voice and I really dug her songs. Please give it a listen.

I don't know if this band has been brought to anyone's attention, but it is a travesty of a sham of a mockery if they have not. Maybe they have been mentioned on another thread, but I will press on anyway.

The National

I believe they are made up of 4 homegrown boys that have relocated to Brooklyn. Two are twins and went to Elder and a third, Matt Berninger, went to high school at St. X and was a year ahead of me. You can't go wrong with any one of their last three albums: Alligator, Boxer and High Violet.

I don't know if they haven't been mentioned on this thread because their last album came out one and a half years ago, but I am still going to give them high praise. One of the best indie bands going.

"I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees; I'll never marry but Ohio don't remember me."

Also, one of my favorite lyrics bar none:

***Leonard Cohen has new release on 1/31/12 --- Old Ideas***

new Leonard Cohen
(listen to 3 songs from the new album)

Leonard Cohen is releasing his first album since 2004's Dear Heather this month. The album, titled Old Ideas, comes out January 31 via Columbia (currently up for pre-order at Leonard Cohen's webstore). That's the cover art above. Towards the end of last year, he revealed the piano-led, "Show Me the Place." He followed that with the album's second single, "Darkness," a smokey blues tune that fits eerily well with Cohen's aged voice. The most recent offering from the album is the whispered ballad, "Going Home," which The New Yorker posted along with a poem, which is also the song's lyrics. Listen to all three songs and check out the album's full tracklist, below...

First Listen: Leonard Cohen, 'Old Ideas'

In a recent public conversation with fellow rock bard Jarvis Cocker about the new recording Old Ideas, Leonard Cohen answered the younger man's suggestion that his songs are "penitential hymns" (a phrase Cohen himself employs in his new song "Come Healing") with jocular humility. "I'm not sure what that means, to be honest," Cohen reportedly replied. He continued, "Who's to blame in this catastrophe? I never figured that out."

The catastrophe he mentions is life itself — a description Cohen probably picked up from a fictional character he admires, Zorba the Greek, who embraced the "full catastrophe" of a well-connected, joyfully physical existence. The Buddhist teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn has also borrowed it for a book title, which is relevant, since Cohen's writing is famously philosophical, connecting his Jewish heritage to years of Zen meditation and an enduring existentialist bent.

But this spiritual master is a sensualist, too: His artistry is grounded in the careful examination of how the body and the soul interact. Old Ideas, his 12th studio album, was recorded after a triumphant world tour that had Cohen performing three-hour shows night after night — no mean feat for a man in his late 70s. It throbs with that life, its verses rife with zingers and painful confessions, and its music sounds more richly varied than anything Cohen has done in years.

Its depth comes in the tenderness and refined passion Cohen brings to his thorough descriptions of being human — a state in which pain and failure dance with transcendence and bliss, as he growls in harmony with his angelic backup singers in the beautiful "Come Healing," "The heart beneath is teaching to the broken heart above."

Old Ideas provides plenty of new lines like that, worthy of a Quotable Cohen anthology. (My favorite right now is from the folksy waltz "Crazy to Love You": "Crazy has places to hide in that are deeper than any goodbye.") But what makes this album special is its sound, which steps back from the synthesizer-heavy arrangements dominant on Cohen's other late-period work and explores a range of styles, from countrypolitan twang to gypsy jazz to Dylanesque blues.

Bobby Zimmerman, in fact, is a clear reference point throughout Old Ideas. At times, it seems like a response to Time Out of Mind, the 1997 release that marked the beginning of Dylan's epic lion-in-winter phase. (That he was only 57 when he made it shows how long a pop star's old age can last.) Like that album, Old Ideas contemplates mortality in the bitter light of failed romance; it fearlessly broaches emotional extremes while still dropping the wisdom of an elder who should know better. "The Darkness," with its funky undertow, and "Banjo," an easy talking blues, are especially Dylanesque, with Cohen adding tartness to his own gravelly growl and his band getting into a loose Americana groove.

In the end, of course, Leonard Cohen remains his own man, with a unique sound that brings the temple to the cabaret and a sensibility balancing humor and profundity on the crystal stem of a glass filled with red wine of an ideal vintage. In "Going Home," whose words were recently featured in The New Yorker by poetry editor Paul Muldoon, Cohen's inner spirit pokes fun at his pop-star self: "He's a lazy bastard living in a suit," the enlightened voice says. But you know what? That suit still fits, and the cut is perfection.

Which music streaming site rocks hardest?

Maybe you’ve been enjoying the era of all-you-can-pirate music and how plugged in to the culture it makes you feel. Problem is, now you’re running out of hard drive space and you just know everyone’s going to be talking about how bad Lana Del Rey’s debut album really is when it comes out in two weeks. The Internet, as usual, can fix your problem with its variety of big-music sanctioned streaming sites, which have popped up like mushrooms now that all those labels are getting a cut of the action. Which one is the best? We compared free and paid plans at Spotify, Grooveshark, Pandora, Rdio and Rhapsody. Read on to find out which one wins.

Whatever happened to knights? We live in an age where guys like Elton John and Paul McCartney have been knighted. We used to have guys like Lancelot killing hundreds of warriors and banging the kings younger hot wife. Now we have gay pianists and old Beatles. I feel like if we ever get attacked by a dragon and he captures Kate Middleton, we're totally screwed.

Kate Middleton doesn't need a knight. She'd kick that dragon's ass all by herself  She's a modern princess!

I refuse to use Spotify because I don't want it integrated with my facebook account.

I use it without fouling up either my Facebook or iTunes accounts. Just downloaded onto my iMac and started using it. I have to endure some occasional commercials, but that's better than having it integrated with everything else.

Saw Gotye the other night and I was really impressed. I have listened to his stuff beyond his big hit and liked it but his live show took it to another level. Walked in not expecting much and left a big fan.

Saw Naked and Famous tonight and they were one of the tightest acts I have seen in awhile. I caught part of their show at Lollapalooza and liked it but the show they put on tonight really showed their full range.

My favorite new albums at the moment:

1) Young the Giant by Young the Giant. It's a fantastic debut albut from this Bay area quintet. Hard to really compare them to anyone in particular. It's alternative rock, but with indie sensibilities, with good melody. "My Body" and "Cough Syrup" have gotten some mainstream radio play. "I Got" is my favorite track. I'm hooked on the whole album, though.

2) Strangeland by Keane. Just when I was about to give up on Keane for experiementing too heavily with weird British synth-pop garbage, they return to their Brit piano-rock roots with Strangeland. It's a welcome return, and a long album at 16 tracks (Deluxe version). Great, great album. "Disconnected" and "Neon River" are my favorites.

3) Landline by Greg Laswell. Anyone unfamiliar with the San Diego singer-songwriter's music needs to check him out. He's best known for a slow, melancholic version of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", but that song pales in comparison to his original music. He wrote his recent album, Landline, with his wife, Ingrid Michaelson, also a well known singer-songwriter. Stand out tracks are "Come Back Down", "Dragging You Around", and "New Year's Eve". On prior albums, be sure to give "Comes and Goes (in Waves)", "The One I Love", "Days Go On", and "Sing, Theresa Says" a listen. Also, he released a haunting version of "Into the Mystic" as a single. Most Van Morrison purists will probably dismiss it, but it's one of my favorite songs of all time, and most certainly my favorite cover. In my book, a cover is only worthy of a listen if it adds something new to the song or changes it in an effective and pleasing way. Laswell's "Into the Mystic" certainly qualifies in my book.

Most local indie pop fans know of Cincinnati's The Minor Leagues", who will be playing at the Bunbury next Friday night.

What many might not know is that the band's great 2006 album, "The Pestilence is Coming" is the basis of a musical play of the same name, which is opening next weekend at the Magic Futurebox Theater in Brooklyn. All the songs on the album are featured in the musical.

Ben Walpole, who with Patrick Helmes started the band years ago, wrote all the songs. Ben is a grad student at XU, and is a huge Xavier basketball fan who follows and contributes to our discussion boards and is a regular at the Cintas for home games.

Their most recently released album, "North College Hill" may be their best yet. There are many interesting songs on the album; I especially like "Home" (powerful), "Ghost Maps", and "Secret Codes". At Bunbury and other local venues you'll be able to hear songs from their recently recorded but not yet released album "Northside". If you like melodic, lyrical, and often emotionally rich pop music, try out The Minor Leagues, (minorleaguesmusic.com).

Ah, yes. Subdivisions. I likely....a lot.

The best thing about the song is Geddy Lee moving from bass to synthesizer at various points of the tune. The entire album Signals is excellent.

As we have discussed before, why Rush, Yes and Moody Blues are not in the Rock Hall of Fame is an absolute disgrace.

I can't recommend their EP that's on Amazon and itunes though as I don't think it fairly represents them - it's kind of generic. Supposedly a new album is coming soon. Just got back from watching the Neil Young Movie by Jonathan Demme. Outstanding.

I already have my tix for the Great Man and Crazy Horse up here in Cleveburg on Monday October 8.

New music, yes, But the old geezers make great new music too. I have over 150 Neil Young songs on my IPod. The guy is amazing.

Check out this video from You Tube. It won't let me embed. This video is exactly why Neil Young is and always will be my favorite musical artist. He is real, raw, and will put on record whatever he feels like- most of which he writes in minutes and is almost always genius.

This video is just Neil and his guitar doing a song from his latest album- Le Noise. it's called The Hitchhiker. It is an incredible open autobiographical song about his life.

He's 66.......and still got it. He'll never burn out....and his rust never sleeps.

Spent a superb Wednesday night last week with Golfitup's Brother's band Houndmouth and Dry the River in Washington, DC.

Houndmouth is a New Albany/Louisville based band with a downhome country rock sound, tight musicianship and quality vocalists. They've got an EP out in stores right now and are on an International Tour. A full blown album is in the works. They'll be in Texas this weekend.

Dry the River is more hard rocking, but with a cool twist of a violin in the band. I haven't seen quality use of a violin/fiddle since the days of Seatrain and Hot Tuna but I was impressed by their vibe. They have a new full album out. I'm buyin'.

Live music on the schedule in the next week and a half for me. Ledgewood's band- Smug Saints on October 3 at the Grog Shop in Cleveburg then Neil Young/Crazy Horse in Cleveland on October 8.

Like Neil Young's lyric goes "Live Music is better...bumper stickers should be issued!"

TONIGHT!!! I'm there!

Leggggggggo!!

Great show last night by Ledgewood's Smug Saints. That boy Ledge sings a mean tune. Was also very impressed by Jack & the Bear. 2 violins, mandolin, banjo, accordion, brass, keyboards, acoustic guitar (that I swear the guy ripped off from Ledgewood) bass and drums. Good stuff from the Monroe, Michigan based band.

Bought the Smug Saints CD. Looking for Jack and the Bear material.

Check 'em!

This video has 360 million views on Youtube. I head it is the "most liked" video in the sites history.

My kids were watching it. They said a Bengal did the Gangnam Style horse dance after a sack. Is that true? I would like some confirmation. Have any of you done the horse dance?

I have no idea how an over-weight middle aged Korean man who can't dance got such quick fame, but I admit that the beat is catchy and addicting. It is even fun. And if you haven’t seen this video, don’t be surprised if you find it running through your head later today if you watch it…

Is this a sign of the apocalypse?

On the heels of seeing Neil Young & Crazy Horse in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago, I finally picked up their brand new CD Psychedelic Pill yesterday and listened to it driving back up I-71. Perfect cruising music.

Just Classic Neil Young. Stream of consciousness White Man guitar rock by the greatest Garage Band ever formed. Ever hear of an opening tune that lasts a full Twenty Seven minutes and thirty seven seconds? Even more. Ever see anyone who could actually pull it off to where you wished it never ended? That would be Mr. Young and Company on Drifting Back. These guys have played together for over 44 years, and they are still as fresh as in 1968.

Oh yeah. There are a couple of other epic songs over 12 minutes long...that never get tedious- Ramada Innat almost 17 minutes and Walk Like a Giant at over 15 minutes. Tasty.

Yep. 66 year old guys can still rock it out...and other 60 plus guys can turn it up loud!

The Hip Hop generation need not apply to this venue. They wouldn't get it- but guys like Eddie Vedder sure do.

The Charlotte game reminded me of a line from a new-ish group called Lionize, that should become the official mantra of Xavier's fans this year. Over the last couple of years Lionize has perfected a sound that is an almost perfect blend of Bob Marley, "Machine Head" era Deep Purple, and "Dark Side" era Pink Floyd. I've seen them 4 or 5 times over the last couple of years and they are really good live. They hail from the D.C area but tour pretty much all over East of the Mississippi.

This year's Xavier comment is in the song Dr. Livingston, which leans a bit more to the Deep Purple side. It includes the line "I need insurance for my optimism/What if something happens/ I think I'll lose my mind". Another similar theme this Xavier year is the song Parlor Tricks.

A couple songs that display the balanced blend the best are Shameless Self Promoter and The Ballad of Ronnie Buttons. Leaning more to the Reggae side are Dumb and Dangerous and an excellent cover of the Bad Brains song I and I Survive. Leaning more to the Pink Floyd side is the combination of Self Propelled Experience Approximator and Trustafarian.

It is an unusual sound even as it is traditional sounding, if that makes sense. If you put Bob Marley, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, Jon Lord, Roger Glover and Ian Paice in a group, this is what it would sound like.

Won't make you want to go out and skip around feeling great about yourself...but the lyrics hit home to guys my age....its a bunch of 40 year olds singing songs about the stuff you think about at that age. Good music and great lyrics. Cincinnati should be proud of these guys.

Revivalists -I think if the black crowes and van Morrison had a musical love child it would sound like the revivalists. I wish I knew you when I was young is probably their most popular song, but probably sixth or seventh on my list. Lead singer is from Hamilton.

Kaleo - Folk rock meets delta blues. Icelandic band. Saw another Icelandic band mentioned in this thread. Would not have thought of Iceland as a hotbed of popular music.

This is pretty cool about BRMC. One of the founding members is bassist Robert Been, who is the son of Michael Been. Michael headed up a band named The Call who were pretty well known in the 90's. Michael then went on to produce a number of the earlier BRMC albums. He was also a good guy as he was convinced by Robert to take in the other BRMC co founder, guitarist Peter Hayes, who was a refugee from an abusive family.
After Michael died of a Heart attack in 2010, BRMC put one of The Call's biggest hits on their 2013 Spectre at the Feast album in honor of Michael- Titled: Let The Day Begin:

And here's the original The Call version, which hit #1 on the USA Rock Charts. I think it's better. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't know where you live, but they've played in Cincinnati a number of times. We heard BRMC play MidPoint Music Festival in 2013 in the Grammer's Tent.

One of their guys' dad was Michael Been who fronted The Call in the 80s. Kind of a cult-fan band. And I think BRMC covered some songs from The Call.

If you like these guys, Levon Been's late father, Michael Been, was lead singer of The Call, which was a fantastic band back in the 80's - hardly new music, but really worth a listen. Reconciled is a really, really good album. One of my favorites and Been had one of the greatest voices I ever heard. Here's one of their early ones.

Levon also stood in for his father for a tribute concert for his father a few years back - pretty good listen.

OMG! Just had my best friend from high school send me “the walls...” by the call 3 weeks ago that we used to listen to. Told him I feel sorry for the guitarist who had to play the same chords over and over for same song! This is crazy the bands father is part of this band...

To those who asked, grew up in Indianapolis and stayed in Cincinnati after X. Unfortunately with kids, Q102 has been on the dial...

You just need to decide to see live music and know what's happening. Cincymusic.com or CityBeat.com to see quick calendars. Both show there is something worth catching live almost every night of the week here. People bitch, but the music scene really offers great opportunities overall. It helps to keep an open mind about seeing bands you might not be aware of now, but so many play here on their way up.

Same thing up here in THE LAND. Besides the usual venues like Blossom, Nautica, The Rocksino Concert Hall and House of Blues, lesser known places (to non-afficianados) like Beachland Ballroom, Music Box Supper Club and Nighttown on the east side have superb acts that I have seen. Even the long term standby The Agora still has occasional shows. A cool event that happened there 3 weeks ago was that two members of Tool came to town for a "Tool Tutorial" where they played a bit and educated a sold out house as to what their process is as a band with Maynard James Keenan to put a record together. They're FINALLY finishing up a new album this year that will be out soon. About damn time!!!!

There is still great music around if you look for it. BTW! Jack White's show up here a couple of weeks ago was truly off the hook. What an entertainer, who has a sense of place and his audience, besides being a fantastic musician.

RIP Cleveland's best little venue: The Barking Spider. That was a fun room. The Grog Shop and The Beachland is really where I'd tell most people to start, but I've heard of a place called Wilbert's. When I gigged I liked playing at The Phantasy/Symposium in Lakewood, but not sure it's the same owners. Mostly don't care about the Cleveland scene compared to experiences in other cities, but The Grog Shop always seemed to have something cool when I was up there.

Here is a current Cleveland band I'd check out:

.

Grog Shop is still cool. Phantasy is pretty much dead at this point. Wilberts is trying to make a comeback. It closed then reopened under new Management. I saw old rocker Willie Nile there a bit ago.

Part of the reason why it's different up here is that we don't have the big "College presence" like Cincinnati or Columbus. Mostly older rockers like me or somewhat younger but definitely a dearth of 18-24 year olds who dig music. Those folks go out of town to school mostly so we're short here except in the summer when ALL the venues are rocking.
Good stuff, Sir.

This one ain't so new, but an old blues song originally written in 1948, recorded and charted by Sarah Vaughan in 1949, masterfully covered by Peggy Lee, and Ella Fitzgerald and superbly redirected by Peter Frampton/Steve Marriott/Humble Pie in 1972. This version is fantastically resurrected by Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa in this version just recorded in 2017.

Keep the Blues alive, man!

There is all kinds of good new stuff out there and coming up.
Things I love:
-Houndmouth's recent "Golden Age" LP
-Greta Van Fleet
-New Raconteurs LP upcoming and tour. Already have my tix for the show in The Land at the Agora.
-New recent Revivalists LP
-Avett Brothers back on tour. Got my tix for them in The Land too.
-Neil Young & Crazy Horse with Nils Lofgren back in the group are back in the studio and a new LP will be released this year.
-Tool is on tour again and will allegedly release a new LP this year, that is if Maynard James Keenan decides to. :-)

Shaping up like a really good music year!

Never thought I'd admit to this, but I'm finding I'm a little bit country ...
Saw the Loving Mary Band last summer in my hometown of Naperville (OK, it was was with Steven Tyler).

But I was just in Nashville ... actually south in Franklin TN where Rorey Carroll was just fillin' in with some bass on some random night. I thought she had a great stage presence. I head to Evanston IL tomorrow to see her and Aaron Lee Tasjan.

Not to worry, I'll put on my purple vinyl of Black Sabbath Paranoid and/or Aerosmith's Get Your Wings to make sure I'm still a little rock n roll.

A little history for you youngsters out there. People think Bruce Springsteen exemplifies the Jersey sound, but the Real Jersey Sound comes from guys like Southside Johnny and Little Steven. When he wasn't touring with Springsteen, Little Steven made probably the most underrated album of the 80's (along with Was, Not Was' "What Up Dog"), Men Without Women. Well, he put the band back together and has a new album that once again puts to shame that pablum "The Boss" has put out for the last 25 years. It gets a little political (but not nearly as political as his older stuff) but the beat is too good I don't really care.

Yes, I am an old white guy.

A friend was trying to convince a group of us to go to Pitchfork this year. He sent a clip of Parquet Courts and I started listening to them and really liking it. Kind of a post-punk, garage band. They pretty much put out an album a year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5CvZTIoir8

Then I started reading up on them and found their lead singer had done a side project called Fergus & Geronimo. I started listening to "Funky was the State of Affairs". The more I read about them the more it sounded like they weren't taking themselves too seriously, but I was thoroughly entertained anyway.

OMG!!! Bought the new Tool album- Fear Inoculum and it is amazing!!

I know Tool isn't for everyone- Prog Metal Rock- but this album is a masterpiece if you are into that genre. Danny Carey is just amazing drummer with total disregard for time stamps, but somehow keeps the rhythm intact. Maynard's vocals are more understated than ever-didn't hear a single scream through the entire 87 minute LP- but the lyrics get his point across. Adam Jones actually has a few guitar solos that are fire, and Justin Chancellor's base holds it all together. It has been 13 years since the last Tool LP, and the wait is worth it. They're touring soon too and I'm getting my tix for The Land on 11/10.

This album is dense has hell with multiple layers to sort through the complex maze, but sonically I uncover another one every listening. If you like any of this type of music, buy this sucker, just sit back for an hour and a half and let it engulf you.

Tool is a band you have to unravel. Whether you are seeking lyrical genius or musicianship, you can find it if you are looking. Every album after Aenima, presents a complex puzzle with rhythms, references, and meaning. But you are right, it's not for everybody.
