View Full Version : Future Trouble for IU?

There's a pretty provocative (and super long) article up at espn.com about IU BBall, Indiana Elite and a basketball and education nonprofit organization:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=6587668
As those who closely follow the recruiting trail know, IU is killing it right now (they have kids locked up through 2014...). This article asks some serious questions about their success...
Thoughts? Much ado about nothing or a scandal brewing?

This Adams guy seems like a real scumbag hiding behind the front of a non-profit that isn't benefiting anyone but the Hoosiers.
Hopefully they get busted by the NCAA and it opens up some recruiting doors in Indiana.

At this point, who isn't in future trouble?

Pretty interesting. I think everyone had/has to be thinking this after their recent recruiting success. IU is a dying program as far as most kids coming into the college scene now are concerned, and it still stuns me that so many kids (in a row) can march down to Bloomington for another disappointing season followed by a recruiting scandal.
But I agree with drudy :D

It's becoming clearer why the Big Twelve (10) wants to pay its players. They'll want retroactive applicability of that rule when it goes into place, too. Having Indiana basketball and Ohio State football crushed by NCAA sanctions would be horrific for business for the Big Twelve (10).

Have you seen Indiana play recently?? It's past being in future trouble. They're in CURRENT trouble.

It would be nice to see some sort of violations hit New Mexico as well..Alford is a huge jerk and would definitely deserve it

Seeing as how IU has such an advantage in the state, it is amazing how Travis "Steal" has been able to rip talent out of there.
No wonder Crean is pissed. Even with all of the assistance and advantages, he's still getting worked by other schools for some in-state recruits.
Tommy will be given his ultimate fate in a couple more years. Never fear.

At least they're using the talking points of the social/economic justice aspect of it (the players generate the money, the owners keep 99.9% of it), even though it is just a competitive-imbalance motivation.

Sorry, but I don't think Crean is losing sleep over how IU is recruiting the state of Indiana right now. They're tearing it up for the most part.

Then why was Crean so pissed a few months ago? He almost came out and accused Xavier of cheating to get guys.
They're putting a lot of eggs in the Cody Zeller basket.
Time will tell

I go to IU, so I'm obviously a little biased, just as you are biased against IU, I would imagine.
I don't know, I think with highly rated Indiana recruits like Etherington, Zeller, Parea, Hollowell, Patterson, Yogi Ferrell, Trey Lyles, and James Blackmon Jr. coming in throughout the next 3-4 years, any rational Hoosier fan can't be disappointed with the job Crean has done keeping in state talent.
Like you, I question why Crean sometimes does whine and indirectly point fingers elsewhere, but I guess time will tell whether this works out or not.
I understand your mindset, because I used to root against IU and similar programs, but to deny that there is an influx of talent coming to Bloomington which looks like it will make Crean at least somewhat successful is borderline ignorant.

Actually, I'm not anti- IU.
I know Tom Pritchard who played at St. Eds HS here in Cleveburg with my nephew and Delvon Roe. I've got no axe to grind- except with Crean who A) pulled the same thing on Marquette that the desert raccoon pulled on XU and B) Acted like a whiny bitch because he was getting outworked for a while on the Indiana recruiting trail.
Whatever. I am, however, very against this whole AAU ugly underbelly culture. I've seen it from very close and from many angles- and the whole thing stinks. My cousin, who was a very successful Big 12 coach for over 20 years- and an Olympic Gold medal winner as an assistant, finally had enough with trying to deal with it and is much happier now as an Assistant Athletic director.
Just the term "AAU Runner" makes my skin crawl.

I haven't indepently fact checked this so take it for what its worth:
JeffRabjohns (http://twitter.com/#%21/JeffRabjohns) Jeff Rabjohns From the information I have, 19 A-Hope players have/are going to play college basketball - 1 has played at IU, 2 are committed to IU. by tsnmike

James Blackmon Jr.
Of course, if he turns out to be good enough, Calipari will give him the nod and he'll end up at Kentucky. It's a nice placeholder commitment for him, though.

I was an IU fan long before I came to X, so I don't have an anti-IU bias. I will admit that Crean has assembled a talented list of recruits who have committed. He is now on the door-step of having to win games and make the post-season. If he and Cody Zeller have not made a post-season tournament by the end of Zeller's Sophomore year, I suspect the fan base will turn on him.

I don't see this killing IU right now but it will for sure give Parea a suspension during his Freshman year. If it's in the Kanter range then the entire year is not out of the question.

Perea is a kid in a foreign country being pulled in all directions by people of questionable character and intentions. Indiana and Baylor come out very dirty in all this.
That's what I take from this.
