I gotta hand it to the guys at New Mexico State. This is innovative. It's just too bad that the team sucks...

Is it really that innovative? It is similar to what lots of other programs do, it just doesn't have a name. Many players are recruited by a coach and informed that they can't offer them a scholarship but will let them walk on to the team with the understanding if there are free scholarships later they could gain one. Coaches are under no obligation to provide a scholarship to them (and this article sounds like if it is promised in the future then it could be a violation).

Isn't this very similar to what happened with Andrew Taylor? I guess the only difference is that it didn't happen as quickly.

No. Andrew Taylor had a scholarship the day he walked on campus. He voluntarily gave up his scholarship in April, it was given to JC, then given back when graves left.

Edit: Taylor was on scholarship the day he walked on campus. He sat out a year on scholarship per transfer rules. Play a year then he voluntarily gave up his scholarship in April, it was given to JC, then given back when graves left.

I believe this is true. But I also believe there was an understanding on the part of all involved that Andrew's scholly was *truly* on a year-to-year basis, and that he might not have it the following year depending on how things shook out.
