Makes sense. I know NKU has wanted to do this for a while now (since 2005 at least) but because of budget problems and then the NCAA's moratorium they couldn't do for it. But the NCAA is lifting the moratorium this fall and now that NKU has The Bank of Kentucky Center (and other campus improvements) it seems like a great time to go for it. Sounds like they are striving to get into the Horizon but if they cant get in there they will go to the OVC.

Good move for them. Does X and UC now have a new rivalry game they have to play?
Horizon league? Great addition

Their soccer stadium is nicer than XU's. That is a another nice part of their athletic facilities besides of the Bank of Kentucky Center. They probably need to upgrade their baseball stadium but other than that I don't see much else they would have to do.

I like the move, it's about time. They seem to have the facilities, so why not? I like seeing programs striving for more. Don't they need one more womens program in order to meet minimum athletic standards though? I hope they add lacrosse. Badass.
I HATE dayton.

Miami does - I'm not sure that X and UC do.
And District of Columbia Muskie will claim that NKU is not a rival in 5..4..3..2..1..

Cronin will schedule NKU until they become competitive then he will drop them and replace them with Thomas Moore.

Persue? There instead of their?
Is this DII spelling and grammar? NKU will need to step it up to compete on the DI level.

Yeah I'd imagine it will take a couple of years to become competitive. The BOK Center is a great asset to have and I know the administration looks at Xavier's progression the last 30 years as a model. So I think they will be competitive sooner rather than later. I'm not sure about Dave Bezold's coaching abilities though.

Funny how a post seems to turn on itself, and then finally consumes same.
That said, Northern has been thinking about the move for some time, and letting all its stakeholders mull it over. The move to D-1 isn't cheap, and it's important to get everyone on board.
The NCAA has held up D-1 expansion for the past few years, apparently the result of some new D-1 approvals not finding league approval immediately and schools thereby floating around in space. NCAA doesn't like schools floating around in space. But mostly the the NCAA likes the NCAA. Another thread for another day.
The NCAA charges a million bucks to process a D-1 app fee. But that's just a down payment on future costs to the university. NKU can expect that annual costs for all D-1 sports, including obligatory scholarships in all sports, will be in excess of $4M annualy. Once NKU is accepted into D-1, and it will be, it will not be able to share in NCAA tourney competition proceeds for the first five years of its D-1 membership.
NKU has 15K students, a solid experience in D-II competition, a shiny new arena that holds over 9K, and excellent facilities and support in place for the other twelve or so sports. So it is time.
But the U's budget is $200M, so four or five million bucks really do count. Hence, some hesitation, particularly in an uneven economic clime.
NKU is a good fit for the the Horizon League for several reasons. But the most important reason is that NKU is/will be an integral part of the Cincinnati tv market. So that means Cleveland, Indy, Chicago, Milwaukee, etc. could be tied together by media. We'll see.
Sports aside, as a university, NKU is ready to graduate to the bigs. It's the only regional university in Kentucky (Western, EKU, Murray State, Morehead, etc.) that is not D-1. So associating with the bigs is the right thing to do.

I would go to NKU games when X isn't playing. I already do. I'm in favor. Would love to see Butler, Wright St, et al at the BOK.

I think it's another ticket to an X game that I can go to easily. Surely, X would play these guys occasionally, right?

NKU should be in d1, they have a better arena than 2/3 of A-10
