Dayton’s Brian Gregory remains Georgia Tech’s top choice and will likely replace Paul Hewitt as the Yellow Jackets next coach.

Sources told FOXSports.com that an announcement could come in the next 48 hours.

Gregory, a former Tom Izzo assistant at Michigan State, has spent the past eight years at Dayton – where he’s compiled a 172-94 record.

He led the Flyers to an NCAA appearance in 2004 and also went in 2009.

Dayton won the NIT two seasons ago and lost to Charleston in the first round of the NIT this season.

WTF?!? Does GT know this? Seriously, how the hell does THAT warrent money?

Alright, I've done it before and I'll do it again. It seems big-time athletics (be it collegiate or professional) loves under-achievers and half-ass talent. I am once again putting my name in the hat. I currently don't have a job, but you know what, MY team DIDN'T have a losing record in the Atlantic 10. More so, I feel I'll be able to relate easier to these student-athletes since I am only a couple of years older than them. More so, I know my limitations and can set expectations.

Seeing as I'm either just as qualified or more so, I'd like the job GT. Seriously, I'll move. The girlfriend will understand. And whatever BG is getting paid, I'll cut my rate down 25% from him. Boom, roasted: Brian Gregory.

This is a freaking joke.

Home and home with Georgia Tech?

F that. A midget led team will have an absolutely atrocious RPI. We won't gain a damn thing over playing some of the other teams we schedule OOC.

In a word, the midget and GT are going to absolutely disappear. GT has only themselves to blame.

I HATE dayton.

The day every rational UD fan has been waiting for. Party on Brown St!!! In all seriousness, has anyone ever seen an ACC school take a coach that's own fan base wanted him gone?

Georgia Tech fans must be sick to their stomachs.

I was just about to post this link. I don't know what in the hell the GT AD was thinking. How could someone running a D-1 athletic dept be so clueless? All he had to do was ask a few UD fans about their opinion on BG and he should have been scared away. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot.

Worst. News. Ever.

Come on now. I was really excited, already getting my 2018 shirt designed for next year's UD/X games.

So many questions now.

Who will Dayton replace Gregory with to keep players undeveloped?

Who will keep their locker room divided and help tension remain ever-present?

Who will make countless excuses as to why they lose?

Who will make countless remarks about how preseason expectation are too high and that 7-9 is respectable for their program?

Who will they bring in that we can easily poke fun of based on common but humorous physical characteristics?

So many questions, so many possibly answers.

Titan, you're underestimating their AD to begin with. If they were stupid enough to extend Gregory to 2018 because of 1 NCAA win and an NIT crown, I have faith that they'll either hire a retread coach or an up-and-comer that missed out on a job like Missouri or NC State.

Or will they just wimp out like Tennessee and have a search firm do the dirty work that Tim Wabler can't do himself?

It must be Monday, I could never get the hang of Mondays.

I was just about to post - if you thought our March Madness was worst case, imagine what That School Up North is going through. Any modicum of talent on that team is either graduating (read: exhausting their NCAA eligibility), or trasnfering out. Then their beloved coach abandons them for a BCS tier job.

Then I started reading this thread and realized - their fans don't like BG either! It's pretty bad when your Men's Basketball head coach accepts another gig, and your fanbases immediate reaction is not one of doom, gloom, and mourning. (Best done at bars with copious amounts of cheap beer and booze) Instead yoru fanbase is throwing a big celebratory party. (Best done at bars with copious amounts of cheap beer and booze) .

Quick - somebody find a GT board, and see if we can get some archival threads of their fans thrilled to death with this exciting new hire. We have ourselves a coach that can win us the NIT boys, this program is going to soar to new heights now!

On a serious note: you do have to feel for whoever gets the Dayton job. Not only do they have to move to the ghetto that is Dayton, they will find themselves with a depleted locker room, an out of date "modernized" arena. But they will have a rabid fanbase, and sold out games, which is some consolation. And they get Swampy to either point out their praises or shortcomings. What more could a coach want, the lead page of the DDN? I hear one of the interview questions is "Have you ever won a game at Cintas Center?"

If Gregory couldn't win in the A-10, how in the world is he ever going to win in the ACC? He won the following as Dayton coach:

1) 1 A-10 regular season title (his 1st year)
2) 0 A-10 tourneys
3) 1 Ncaa tourney game

The last time something this dumb happened was when Clemson hired Purnell. When that happened I called my sister who is a Clemson grad and told her sorry for however long he is there. It was great to see Purnell win 0 NCAA tourney games at Clemson and in Brad Brownell's first year Clemson wins a tourney game, allbeit a first four game, but nonetheless counts as a tourney win.

In cases like these I never blame the player or coach for taking money and moving on. GT is ultimately going to look like the fool down the road for not only hiring Gregory but for just considering him as their head coach. Living in the Baltimore area I look forward to watching GT get rolled many times in the coming years. Now we can only hope Dayton hires another terrible coach so we can continue many years of laughter at their expense.

The mood in ATL is about 98% negative towards this move. Hilarious. Some of the comments on the AJC site and the radio stations are classic. Dud seems to be the favorite word they are using. As a Xavier and a UGA fan, I find this hilarious and entertaining. Two hated rivals, linked together by the suckiness that is the midget. Awesome.

No unfounded jubilation on the GT boards, or call in shows, or newspaper comments or whatever?

Even better!

When you, as a head coach, make a voluntary move to another program - and the fans of the school you are LEAVING are happy, and the fans of the school you are JOINING are sad, something is seriously messed up.

I can only imagine the fans of the other ACC schools, if they know much about Brian Gregory, are starting to go "Well, that's still two solid free W's every year" Do you almost feel bad for BG the first time he has to set foot inside Cameron Indoor? Just a little bit? Sort of like being led to the floor of the Roman Coliseum.

I love this comment on the AJC:

"You guys should visit Dayton. Recruiting enough talent to that place to make the tournament once in a hundred years should qualify you for the Hall of Fame. I wasn’t even aware Dayton qualified for the NCAA tourney.

On the bright side….At least the offense can’t get any worse."

I know a few girls from High School are pissed at Gregory’s Post UD success…. They sucked their way through Dayton too, and their reward is fighting stretch marks and postpartum.

GT sited Gregory’s reputation of exploiting teams with his dedication to trickery, chaos, and keeping teams guessing….unfortunately GT didn’t understand that those teams were Gregory’s own.

GT wanted a coach who’s recruiting style matched their mascot’s persona…and unfortunately for them Gregory is spot-on… little, annoying and something you eagerly want out of your house.

I think that was actually Gregory logged in saying that.

I cannot wait to hear his real opinions on UD lol. Cannot freaking wait. Hopefully he proves 'unclassy' and throws the whole f'ing fan base under the bus.

Is it me or did Gregory always sound like he was a whiny little boy when he talked?

How far can being tutored by a great coach carry you? Apparently as far as you'd like.

Gregory is skipping town just ahead of the mob. I think he must be well connected and well liked.

I took a look at the GT board and it is getting comical... they are starting to find the UD propaganda lines and don't know enough to not accept them as true. Such as

"In 15 years, Coach Gregory has sent 20 players to the NBA".

Umm were any of those players from UD or were they all from his time at MSU where the players came for Izzo and not Brian Gregory.

According to CoachingNewsOnline.com, the early list of candidates to replace the departed Brian Gregory at Dayton include:

• Wisconsin-Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter
• Morehead State head coach Donnie Tyndall
• Murray State head coach Billy Kennedy
• Old Dominion head coach Blaine Taylor
• Ohio State assistant coach Jeff Boals
• Ohio head coach John Groce

This, by far, is one of my favorite comments from Tech fans trying to psych themselves into the hire:

"He's an X's and O's guy. We really need that"

If by X's and O's you mean substitute always, relentlessly, no matter what is happening in the game, then yes, he's all X's and O's.

I'm sad to see him go. :(

So where does "Buckets" end up?

Dayton fan if he stays: What a class act, just a great kid. He's going to do great things just like Muddy told me!

Dayton fan if he goes: He sucked anyway, I heard he was a poison in the locker room.

Watching this coaching search is going to be a hilariously humbling experience for UD. A few fans are mentioning names like Anthony Grant and Shaka Smart (although more rational fans are shutting that down pretty quickly). It doesn't seem that UD has any assistant coaches that are ready (not that you would want anyone from the Brian Gregory coaching tree anyways) ala Miller or Mack at Xavier. This coaching search could end up becoming a pretty epic clusterf*ck.

Gah! Kelsey to dayton! Watermelon heads exploding all over the midwest!

I honestly feel sorry for GT. What were they thinking even offering the midget? Really.
In a wierd turn of my brain, it would be hilarious if the midget became successful at GT. I mean really successful. the dayton fans would harp on how he was so good, but just couldn't do it at dayton.

I'm having a really fun day today.

I know there has been a lot of speculation lately of Brian Gregory getting fired at uDump, but I never expected this. Should this be viewed as a promotion for him? Major college, major conference, past recent tourney success.

I also wonder if this came after J Staten declared he was transfering or if J Staten transfered because this was happening.

Please go check out UDPride for their recommendations for future coaches. It will provide you a great deal of entertainment. My favorites so far:

Chris Mack (LOL)
Bob Knight (really)
Anthony Grant (because he's going to leave an SEC school for UD)
Shaka Smart (BCS school will back up the truck)
Tommy Amaker

The list goes on and on.....

Now they are taling about getting one of the Hurly sons, yes the Hurly that was interviewed on 60 Minutes on Sunday for turning St. Anthony's into a basketball player factory.

I think they know Anthony Grant is a pipe dream - witht he comment, ther's no chance, but you have to ask. Uhm, no you don't, at least not publicly, that causes situations where coaches and fans know that you couldn't get your top choice or top two choices or whatever, and are settling for whats behind Door #3.

Speaking of Door #3 (or Door #2) in this case, I hear Tennessee filled their vacancy now that it is known that Coach Mack turned them down. I'd consider the Tennessee job to be "scorched earth" after the NCAA gets through with them.

Regarding the Gregory hire at GT. A blurb from an article on ESPN:

Some quick hitters
• It was really weak that Georgia Tech assistant athletic director Wayne Hogan went out of his way to deny reports that the Yellow Jackets were hiring Brian Gregory. Clearly this was in the works, and Georgia Tech looks small in the way it handled things over the weekend.

• Hiring Gregory is a questionable move. So let's get this straight: The Yellow Jackets pay $7 million to buy out Hewitt and then hire Gregory, whose Flyers finished 7-9 in the A-10 (eighth place) and 22-14 overall. Gregory did win the NIT championship in 2010 with a victory over North Carolina, but he reached the NCAA tournament only twice in eight years. Hewitt made the NCAAs last season, and won a first-round matchup with Oklahoma State. Hewitt also made four other NCAA appearances, and reached the national championship game in 2004. Should he have been let go? You can make that argument. But to fire him, pay him money and get a coach who hadn't done nearly as much as Hewitt at a lower-level conference? How does this make sense?

This is an exact quote from a good friend of mine who is a big Georgia Tech guy:

"That’s what I was afraid of. I suspect that we had to go for someone we could afford instead of someone we need. The GT athletic program made all of $110,000 profit this year and we will not finish paying off Chan Gailey’s contract until January of 2012. In addition, we now owe Paul Hewitt $7.5 mil over the next six years. Based on those numbers, I doubt we could afford to pay anyone else more than mid to high six figures (it sucks being poor). Perhaps in six years we can afford to dump Gregory and go after a really good coach."

What a mess. It happens in the gilded BCS ranks as well.
