View Full Version : Coaching Carousel 2011
NC State site having a little fun with the Cronin rumors. Some highlights:
- Coach Cronin's can-do attitude and portability make him well-suited for this job and any number of overhead compartments.
- ...concerns over Cronin's slight stature negatively affecting his ability to open the RBC Center's doors or reach, say, the phone on his desk.
Here's the link for the rest. Enjoy.

Miami is his home. He would much rather be in Miami, FL than Manhattan, KS. I am sure he is pushing hard for that job. He would own Florida recruiting and if he can bring Delonte Hill with him he would continue to have connections in Baltimore and the Carolina's.

No, even though I would love to see him at the U, I just dont see him leaving K State, better facilities and fans care about K State basketball. Nobody cares about basketball at the U, that is why Haith was getting paid 1.5 mil for garbage production.
Frank Martin is their number 1 candidate, but K State will give him a larger salary and it helps K State that the U is also looking for a new AD at the same time.

NC State must be low balling. Unless they are just playing the waiting game and they think Brad Stevens wants the job. They were only paying Lowe $750K so I doubt they are going to get crazy with the next hire. Roy Williams only earns around $300,000 in salary and the rest of his roughly $1.7 million is made up elsewhere. So to think NC State will offer anyone $2 or $3 million is probably a little far fetched. Maybe it is a state law in North Carolina regarding state employee salaries being in line with state guidelines. Who knows?

Oh, sorry. I thought you were saying something else. That said, I'd add two points: (1) Roy is clearly giving UNC a HUGE hometown/alma mater discount; and (2) NC State will have to overpay to get the quality of coach they are looking for to take over that program.
On that second point, I had a funny discussion with a friend yesterday. I'm not in the coaching profession, but I think this equally applies. We have 2 friends who recently got new jobs. Both were recruited away from their old jobs where they were happy and respected. When recruited they told the recruiter that it would take a lot to move, because they were happy. They were asked to name their price, which was between 2 and 3 times their current income. Both times their price was accepted wholesale. Moral of the story? If you're convincing someone to leave their current job, they're not looking to leave, and there is some degree of risk in the new job, you have to pay them a lot to take that risk -- and typically much more than they'd otherwise be worth.

I agree and that is why I think they are not offering as much as they need to. Shaka Smart by all indications is a very smart man. If NC State was offering him $1.5 million more than he is making now he would say where do I sign? He coached a team to a 4th place Colonial league finish and then got hot to make a run to the final 4. He will lose 5 seniors so next year will be very difficult and he may never be heard from again. So NC State is either offering a very low price or they already have the next coach lined up but cannot announce it yet.

I must just be dense this morning. Sorry. I agree with you -- they clearly do not realize that leaving a successful program to take that job is a risk that must be taken into account compensation-wise. I can already see how this is going to turn out. Having failed to lure any of their top prospects (nearly all of which were asinine), they are going to overpay a more experienced hack who has neither the energy nor chops to compete with the new generation, and will be a total flop.

That's a pretty good list of candidates:
Longergan - Vermont head coach, has been successful in the America East
Jones - American head coach, has been successful in the CAA
Dooley - Kansas assistant and GW grad
Chillious - UW assistant, had a good amount of success as a head coach at the prep level

American U is in the Patriot League which is a far cry from the CAA, but nonetheless Jeff Jones has done a nice job there and has been in DC for over a decade so obviously he knows the area. I think it's a solid list too. It would be nice to see GW turn things around because the A10 is better off when the program in this market is in good shape.

Mark Turgeon to Maryland. Not a particularly sexy choice.

I personally think Turgeon is a better choice than Brey. I think he is a better coach and a better recruiter. The east is definitely not his familiar area but he just needs to hire some good assistants.

I agree with this. I'd rather have Turgeon then Brey. Pretty good hire considering. Doubt Maryland fans will feel that way.

Murray State's Dan Kennedy is off to Texas A&M, meaning the best entry-level job in all of college basketball is available. I don't exactly want to lose Pat Kelsey, but that's the job he should go after if he wants to be a head coach (assuming Mack is sticking around a while).

Mark Turgeon has hired assistant Dalonte Hill from Kansas State. This is a huge coup, as Dalonte has a lot of AAU contacts around the Maryland area. According to Jeff Goodman, Dalonte will be taking a pay cut to join the Maryland staff.

Hill was the one who was brought in to get Michael Beasley. I'm sure Frank Martin will be able to find another pipeline to get players to K-State.

The biggest knock on Gary Williams was recruiting. Mark Turgeon adding Delonte Hill just crushed Williams in recruiting.

Ed DeChellis is bolting Penn State for...Navy. Apparently, some coaches read Feinstein's work and dream of coaching in the Patriot League.

Per Jeff Goodman, Brandon Miller has resigned as assistant coach at Ohio State University. Miller age 32 stated that he wants to spend more time with his family. Interesting that in the past two months, two top assistant coaches have resigned to spend more time with family.
