Turn on your TV.

Japan hit by 8.9 quake. After shocks of 7.4. Largest quake in 40 years. The 7.7 in 1923 leveled Japan.

Some of the videos and pictures are awful. It could get worse if some of those nuclear plants leak radiation. They already evacuated a 3km radius around one of them.

Tsunami to hit Hawaii at any minute too.

Simply amazing amount of damage to the island. Here's to hoping the amount of lives lost remains small and the people on Pacific shores take the tsunami warning to heart. No need for senseless injuries/deaths that could easily have been avoided.

Agreed Jumpy. It amazes me the amount of people who want to go to the shoreline and watch/surf the waves that come in during a tsunami. I remember last spring when they were expecting large waves in Hawaii and the shore was flooded with spectators and surfers. They got lucky and the waves didn't amount to much, but it only takes one massive wave and all of those people would have been dead.

My prayers go out to everyone effected. The videos out of Japan are jaw dropping. Simply astounding and horrific. My friend in Hawaii just texted me and she evacuated but it sounds like they dodged a bullet.

I HATE dayton.

I am in communication with my friends in Japan. Things are a bit chaotic in Tokyo, but authorities are just trying to make sure that the tracks, tunnels, and bridges are all OK before they release the trains and subways. A lot of people are just going to sleep in the office.

The Dane's son is at Misawa Air Base in Aomori at the very northern tip of Honshu. We haven't heard from him, but we saw on CNN that all US personnel are accounted for. They are diverting flights to Misawa, so we are sure that he is busy tending with passengers since he is in base security.

This whole thing brings back bad memories for me of the Kobe earthquake in 1995. Over 5,000 people died in that quake. I was "next door" in Osaka, and it was horrible. I grew up with quakes in NoCal and went through Loma Prieta in 1989, but the Kobe quake was a massive step up from that. The quake struck in the morning, and we spent all day trying to get out of the area and back to Tokyo. We probably walked at least 20 miles before we found a ride to Nagoya where we caught the Shinkansen back to Tokyo.

Holy Crap. These tsunami's are travelling as fast as a jumbo jet! 600mph in some areas!

I lived in Kobe for six years growing up. Every now and then I would feel a little quake but nothing big. Then I left and the big one came and flattened the whole city. If I ever went back I would not be able to recognize anything from my youth. No going back to the old stomping grounds. They say you can't go home again...

I would be surprised in Japanese Nuke plants are over engineered to pass some serious quake muster. That whole country lies on some serious fault lines.

I bet they recover been than Haiti did.

Word is coming out that the flood waters have broken a dam. Not good.

It is cold there. It is 33F in Sendai right now. 30F in Aomori. High temps tomorrow will be mid-40s. That is not going to help.

Going to be rough in the morning when they see everything, and it's that cold. Guy on CNN just talking about going through the Kobe one, and how this one was so much worse. Lots of work ahead there.

My friends in Japan are stunned. They have never experienced anything like this. I also have a friend in Honolulu who lives on the beach and has headed to higher ground as the sirens sound.

Heard about this on 700WLW, and thankfully everyone is okay. Hopefully the same for any UC and Miami students over there.

Utterly horrific. In this day and age of instant information, some of these vids, personal information, and events is shocking.

It drives me crazy to be honest. I want to do something, help. Some way, any way. And I can't right now.

I HATE dayton.

Warning cancelled. It was issued because the explosion at the plant was so large it set off the warning sensors.

I heard a tsunami was scheduled to hit Cleveland about 7:30 Friday night.

My sources tell me Marquette and their program were advised to seek shelter from the waves of punishment they will face after their first round game tips off.

The destruction where that tsunami hit is just mind-boggling. So sad. Feel so bad for those people that lost everything and loved ones lives lost, and the huge, huge clean-up in front of them.

But no looting and rioting. Everyone's home in Japan could break down, but Japanese society would not break down. They have rules and everyone abides by them. To do otherwise would be unJapanese.

The collective disciplne is incredible. It is a strong and deeply rooted culture. I read in the New York Times that the Japanese don't even have a word that translates into loot. They simply don't do anything like that and that is never even considered an option, not even linguistically. Think about that.

Japan is the safest place you could ever be unless you are Korean. Then all bets are off.

That is incredible...Simply incredible. Why the hatred of Korea? I understand North Korea, but South? Does it stem from WW2 or go way back further than that?

Japan Colonized Korea and sent Koreans into forced labor, something which tends to breed animosity by the victim. Many of my Japanese friends dislike Koreans simply because (in their words) "they dislike us."

Apparently, the death toll has grown to 2500 today because over 1000 bodies have washed up on shore on on the past 24 hours. I couldn't even imagine something so horrible.
