I don't think ud can't finish higher than 9th. UMass finished 7-9 in conference and has the tie-breaker over them for the 8th seed.

Yeah I just looked at the standings again and realized the same thing. La Salle beat UMass so the whole head-to-head tie-breaker doesn't work with those three. Maybe record against common opponents is second tie-breaker?

They only underachieve because they get undeserved pre-season hype EVERY year. When you really look at it, they're actually performing right where they should be; middle of the pack.

I do not know i really think the talent is there. I think it is a combination of bad coaching and not caring by the players

I hope they lose. UMass is horrible, and we'd beat them by 20. Dayton has obviously been bad, too, but they have enough talent to at least be dangerous. I'd rather avoid that in AC.

Beating them three times in the same year is always fun, though, so I am a bit torn.

Fair enough. They do have some talent. But take away all of the pre-season predictions when they were picked to finish in the top of the A-10 and what you see is pretty consistent mediocrity:

2010-2011: 7-9
2009-2010: 8-8
2008-2009: 11-5
2007-2008: 8-8
2006-2007: 8-8
2005-2006: 6-10
2004-2005 10-6

Etcetera, etcetera. Point is they finish in the middle consistently, so I don't think it's underachieving it's more along the lines of just doing what they always do.

As a fan you're hardwired to always root for your team, but at the same time you want what's best for the program over the long haul. Losing to UMass and missing out on AC would have to be rock bottom. The administration can't fool their fanbase into thinking that's a positive like they did with the NIT title. Even if they don't get rid of BG, changes would have to be made within the program.

If they make a ridiculous run (Beating UMass can happen. They played Xavier tough twice. And then you'd have Duquesne or GW, winnable), BG could get a lifetime contract or something. I don't want that. That would be the worst. OTOH, a big run could get BG a new job. I do want that.

I'm torn, but I think losing to UMass is best for the long haul. Changes have to be made. Just blow it up.

Thanks Adam, for your insights. It's weird to hear a fan root against their own team, as you stated, we are kind of wired to always root for our teams no matter what. All for the greater good. Kind of like you know something was wrong when WE were cheering BG's big contract extension. When the fans of your opponent are more excited about your coach's contract extension than you are, something is wrong.

Oh and I enjoyed my trip up to your arena last Sunday.
