I firmly believe that Mike DeCourcy has been partyin' with Charlie....
WTF????
"The job Mick Cronin has done at UC might be the most underrated in the last 10 years of college basketball.
If the fans are not going to recognize and appreciate that then maybe UC should go D-2"
---Mike DeCourcy, The Sporting News, on Sports Talk

Does Mike watch college basketball? Most underrated the last ten years? Are you kidding me?

And Sean Miller took an Arizona program that was down and in serious turmoil and will get them to the dance with a good seed in year two. Arizona is a big-name program, but still, year two. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples too.

If big bad "big brother" in the big bad Big East is being thrown around with words like underrated, then I guess we have passed UC as a program.

Are you crazy?
This is awesome. Let them keep that dude as coach.

When Mick took over, UC was a big name program.

Oh yeah, good point. I forget, based on the sUCkitude of the past years. That just makes what he's done even less impressive.

With all due respect, and sure Mike D has a very soft spot when it comes to UC, but let's really understand what he means. Whether we accept it or not, what Mike, and some others besides Coach Cronin, are trying to tell us is how far the UC program had fallen at the end of Huggs' years and the transition to Coach Kennedy.
They were not just bad, they were awful, had no recruiting and were entering BE. UC could easily be equated to DePaul if Cronin was unable to bring some respectability.
IMO, it still is a bit premature to see if UC sustains any achievement, but under Cronin, even with bumps and bruises, they have shown advancement. But Mike D is more talking about how low UC had sunk than how high UC has risen.

Yes, I hope he stays at UC for years so that I can continue to watch him recruit sub par talent and bitch and moan about every possible situation under the sun. I mean seriously, he is a very unhappy person. Even after a good win, he has something to complain about. I can't imagine he is very well liked in the coaching community.....and I can't imagine his players like him all that much b/c he has no problem singling them out after poor performances.

C'mon now...
Of course DeCourcy oversated it... THAT'S WHAT THE MEDIA DOES! In the media, there is never gray area. Infact, things aren't even black or white... They're opaque or transparent. They see a potential story. They split it into two polar opposite views. They take a side and present it as if it were fact. They wait on the reactions to come in. the more readers/listeners that chime in, the more money advertisers are willing to pay for ad space. Same old formula used by ESPiN on down to the Xavier Newswire.
In fairness to UC, I really thought they would struggle this year without Dionta Vaughn and Lance Stephenson (although in hindsight losing Lance may have been addition by subtraction). While I know Moeller had a scarier non-conf schedule and ESPiN annoyingly pushes them for the Tourney only to enhance the value of their Big East contract... I don't mind giving them credit for having some nice wins in conference. I personally don't feel threatened by them. I don't see Mick taking UC to the top. The more positive press he gets just postpones the inevitable.

yeah at least once a week Mike will say something outlandish and one of the other college bball writers will argue with him about it. I don't hate Mike, and I think he is typically fair and positive about X, but he sure does love UC.

It looks like the local UC beat writer Koch is hoping on the Mick Cronin COY band wagon. He is declaring Cronin the coach of the past 5 years in the Big East. The UC propoganda machine is out in full force. Is this a joke? I'll admit lil Micky has done a solid job this year but give me a break already.

i guess it sort of depends on what his definition of underrated is. earlier someone mentioned sean miller, but sean miller's accomplishments at arizona aren't really flying under the radar.
so, if your definition of underrated is a good coaching job that went unnoticed, maybe he has somewhat of a point.
he still wouldn't come close to topping my list of most underrated coaching jobs in the last ten years, though. not even close, really.

Mike Brey has done a MUCH better job. With a tougher schedule and a home-court winning streak. Not too mention, they'll be a 2 or a 3 seed. A hell of a lot more impressive of a season than UC.
I'd even give Steve Lavin a nod over Cronin, despite him having a senior laden team. Lavin is definitely a hell of a motivator.
Cronin has done alright, but not COY. Not even close.

Oh Jesus. Bill Koch's article in the Enquirer today is absolutely insulting. His thesis: Mick Cronin is the best coach in basketball over the past five years.

Big East CoY, but still, what a homer. If Cronin was really deserving of that, he would have had the team back in the tournament a couple years ago, not finally this year.

Give Koch a break - that article reeks of YTG and the SID office at UC pulling the strings on this one.
It was a miracle that UC won 2 Big East tournament games last season.

I think if we all stop looking through the blue tinted glasses we could see that Cronin has done an outstanding job this season, and also over the years rebuilding the program. Will it be sustainable? That will be tough to see, but still to go from having 1 scholarship guy on the roster when he took over in May of 2006, to a near lock to make the NCAA tournament this year is quite impressive.

Impressive how soo many convienently forget how weak his OOC schedule was
RPI in Bold
Mount St. Mary's 11-21 (9-10) 229 69-59 W
IPFW 17-11 (11-7) 162 65-59 W
Florida A&M 8-19 (7-9) 322 76-51 W
Savannah St. 7-18 (1-1) 264 54-41 W
Dayton 19-11 (7-8) 77 68-34 W
Wright St. 17-14 (11-9) 126 77-69 W
Toledo 3-26 (1-14) 335 81-47 W
Utah Valley 15-10 (12-2) 245 92-72 W
Georgia Southern 2-27 (1-18) 341 99-54 W
Oklahoma 12-16 (4-11) 137 66-56 W
Miami (OH) 15-15 (11-5) 105 64-48 W
St. Francis (PA) 9-21 (7-12) 258 94-58 W
Xavier 23-6 (14-1) 23 66-46 W
They did play very well in-conference, but outside of Xavier(and arguably _ayton) they played nobody OOC. They padded their schedule and you act as if everyone should be jumping up and down proclaiming Mick as COY. Personally I expect more from a COY.
