Anyone wonder why Charlotte was the Forty Niners considering that usually means someone who left for the Gold Rush to California. Well its because their University was saved from being closed in 1949. That kind of made me chuckle. I would like to know more about this. Maybe some of the Niners that live on our site can enlighten us.

I'm sure it didn't cost that much to save at the time. Maybe a few bucks actually.

Because the NCAA wouldn't let them use 69ers.

"A bronze statue of the 49ers Gold Miner sits in front of the Reese Administration building on campus."

Would that be considered irony?

this is such a spare nickname. Three flimsy reasons

1. Because some lady convinced the powers that be not to close them down
2. After the highway the school is off of
3. Because they have lots of gold in that area and there was a gold rush in 1849 that they weren't a part of at all.

If Xavier had followed these reasonings

1. Never was in trouble of being shutdown.... Old Timers?
2. Off of 75.... 75ers?
3. No gold but plenty of pork.... Porkers?
