This is offensive to me. I don't know which is worse: the fact that only 40% of UNC students use their tickets they pick up for games or that The Big Lead writer is excusing the students because the ACC is having a down year...

UNC is a storied program that RECENTLY WON A NATIONAL TITLE. What the eff?! They don't suck this year, either. I'm not saying we have the best student section in the world (they've gotten way better since I graduated a few years back), and I got angry when I'd look up at a dwindled student section against a weak team, but COME ON.

Pathetic.

last year unc was an NIT team that was barely above .500. this year, they are nationally ranked and well on their way to a pretty good seed in the ncaa tournament....

.....and student attendance is DOWN 34%???

that makes no sense to me.

I used to just hate UNC because my roomate at X's number one team was the Tarheels and X second, but now I hate them even more for this.

Thats unreal, Even for Fordham (on a saturday night even) and LaSalle our section was like 90% full. Granted it wasnt the most enthusiastic student sections we have had this year, we still filled it up for the most part...

There really is no excuse for UNC students IMO...

Ugh. I wonder if the students will go to games next year now that they WON THE EFFING ACC. Pathetic.

BTW, they rushed the court last night after beating Duke.

It's no big deal to me, but I know some people believe that it's armature hour to rush the court.

On the one hand, they're one of the storied programs, so it would be beneath them to do it, so to speak. On the other hand, it was against Duke and it was for the reg season title in the ACC.

They screwed up the ticket distribution system there. When I was a student there, you had to get a bracelet with a number on it during the week, and there was a drawing to determine what bracelet number the line started with. Then, on Saturday mornings at either 6 or 7 am (can't remember which), you had to go line up and pick up tickets to three games at a time (Duke is the exception; it was a pick-up all its own). Essentially, it required you to really want the tickets to show up at 6 or 7 am on a Saturday to wait in line for the tickets.

Apparently now they simply distribute the tickets through an online lottery, so there is no "skin in the game" for the people who get the tickets. Much easier to throw the tickets away when all you had to do to get them was sign up for an online drawing than if you stood out in the cold hungover super early on a Saturday morning!

Duke didn't rush the court when they won the first time this season.

Plus, UNC has won multiple national championships thus they can never rush the court again.

Are you kidding me? Wow, I know that UNC sucks but damn, act like you've been there Tar Holes. (Which they unfortunately have.)

I'm guessing most students at UNC are applying for jobs at fast-food joints rather than attending games...

We just rushed the court after beating Charlotte for the Atlantic 10 Championship in our 5th straight season.

UNC didn't even make the NCAA tournament last year. To even pretend that they do not have the right to beat Duke on senior night and win an outright ACC Championship, all while being excited, is ridiculous.

Also, its not like our students typically come to games at a high volume either. I'll have to try and find the number of students who reserve a ticket actually claiming it. I think it is below 60% or something like that.

Walking onto the floor after a game is not the same as rushing the floor. It's totally different than, let's say, the 1999 games against Princeton and UC. Both were spontaneous moments; the game against Charlotte was orchestrated and nothing more than a coronation.

Big difference.

They weren't supposed to be much better this year though (according to people who were not completely insane). I just think we should give them a break. Imagine you go to UNC as a freshman and you didn't make the NCAA Tourney last year. This year would have to feel pretty good after that.

If national championships are the standard at UNC, rushing the floor for a regular season ACC crown (even over Duke) gets cheapened in this case. I can understand Virginia Tech rushing the floor - it was a win over then #1 Duke and was SUPPOSED (and I do mean supposed) to put them in the NCAA Tournament.

But going back to the original point of the thread, UNC fans are the "wine and cheese" crowd that former FSU player Sam Cassell once called them.

They won the NCAA championship 2 years ago. It's not a question of even been there, like when NCSU students rushed after beating Duke 2 years ago, but we're talking about being 2 years removed from winning it all. UNC students shouldn't rush. Period.

And I'd hardly say that the students rushed the court after the Charlotte win. They've let students onto the court on the last game of a championship season for a few years now. (My last game as a student they let us on the court and we watched the nets get cut.)

In 2006, after Xavier won the A10 tourney, THAT was a rush. (A hell of a fun one at that)

UNC's was classless. Xavier's was expected.

And yea SixFig, growing up in NC you either love or hate UNC.

I'd like to see that number, too. Cuz I would believe that number back when I went there from '03-'07, some of those Fordham games on Tuesdays were quite empty. But it seems to me at least that its much more populated in that section than in my days. Doesn't seem like just over half of it is filled with student fans.

This is how I feel. I don't really understand all the condemnation of people for rushing the court. They beat a rival and won their conference. If people want to rush the court, good for them.
