One of my favorite threads on the A-10 message board is the "up to the minute" projections of the A-10 tournament. Here is what it looks like after all the games on the 16th...We will have a little more clarity after the Temple/Richmond matchup tomorrow night.

Here is the Tie Breaker rules for the A-10 seeding as well...I was never sure about these.

TWO-TEAM TIE
1. Head-to-head competition.
2. Conference record of the tied teams based on winning percentage
versus the highest common opponent and proceeding down to the
lowest common opponent, if necessary, until one team gains an
advantage.
a. All ties are broken in descending order.
b. When arriving at another pair of tied teams, use each team’s record
against the tied teams as a group. When comparing records against a
group of teams, the higher winning percentage will prevail. In case of
tied percentages vs. the team or group of 1.000 or .000, the following
shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.
3. Coin toss.

THREE-OR-MORE-TEAM TIE
1. Head-to-head competition.
a. Use each team’s record against the tied teams as a group rather than
performance against individual teams. When comparing records against
a group of teams, the higher winning percentage will prevail. In case of
tied percentages vs. the team or group of 1.000 or .000, the following
shall apply: 2-0 is better than 1-0; 0-1 is better than 0-2.
2. If the above results in two teams remaining, the two-team tiebreaker is used.
3. If more than two teams still remain, use the Conference record of the
tied teams based on winning percentage versus the highest common
opponent and proceeding down to the lowest common opponent, if
necessary, until one team gains an advantage.
3. Draw lots.

I'd prefer Temple to be on the opposite side of the bracket...

Ya think? Temple should beat Richmond tonight, and move to the #3 seed. I would much rather face Temple in the final than in the Semi.

I AM hoping we get a piece of Dayton again in the quarterfinals, just to pour some more salt in the many many wounds they have.

I'd prefer Temple to be on the opposite side of the bracket...

I'd rather lose in the semi's than lose in the finals, to be honest. I think winning out the regular season gets XU at worst a 6 seed, regardless of conference performance. A non-emphasis on the conference tournament won't surprise me. The real accomplishments are the regular season title, and the NCAA tournament.

POLLYANNA
02-17-2011, 11:54 AM
I don't want to lose at all, but better in finals than semi's. My reasoning, lose in semi's and committee lets that "well maybe one seed down." Lose in finals, not time for that thought to take bloom. By Sunday, their focus is a lot more on Big-E, Big-12, and Big Whatever finals.

smileyy
02-17-2011, 11:59 AM
The committee has said in the past that they tend to disregard conference tournament performances from a downside point of view. That is, a team can only improve in their tournament. Of course, seeding is a zero-sum game, so if another team improves _more_ than XU and is in the same seed range, it can become a factor.

Still, I like the extra rest and scouting opportunity. But that's just me.

Xavier and Temple are both shaping up to be 1-2 at this point; there's almost no way they would meet before the finals. As I alluded to in another thread, it's more likely that X would play either Richmond, Duquesne or URI in a semifinal. They're all capable of beating X, and I know URI and Richmond would love a shot at redemption this year.

Richmond is in absolute must win mode against Temple tonight - the end of the regular season will pit Richmond and Duquesne. I wonder who the A-10 will pull for in that matchup.

What, in the (God forbid) scenario that we start losing, and Richmond/Temple?Duq. win out, there could be some dancing going on in the Top 4 seeds as well. Even if we win out there could be some dancing going on in the 2, 3 and 4 seeds.

Speaking of dancing around - who would have thought the St. Joes Hawks would be on the A10 Bubble? Historically hasn't it always been St. Bonnie and LaSalle sweating out that bubble. And then the other 'bubble' Dayton and UMass are on the edge of their seats to find out who needs to prepare their arena, and who needs to make travel plans for March 8.

Why? Dayton's chances of getting a top 4 spot increased from very slim to just slim. Only shot they have is a several team tie at 10-6 or simply a tie with Duquesne at 10-6.

Not if Adam has his way with his low flying-high expectations.

It is entirely possible that Fordham could bail UD out of potentially facing Xavier in the quarters this year. UMass will likely lose at home to Temple and it's not out of the realm of possibility that they lose at Fordham's season finale.

Dayton should (I stress SHOULD) win at home against SLU, and given their ability to trick GW into playing 6-on-5, a win at GW is entirely possible as well.

UMASS will lose 1 more time to Temple. Dayton could win last 2 and get the 6 seed. But I am sure Dayton will lose at GW and thus still get that 8 seed. To be honest I would be perfectly happy with Temple, Richmond and Dayton all being on the other side of the bracket. Not that Xavier would not beat Dayton again because they own them, but it seems like Xavier runs into those 3 every year before the finals.

It appears that dayton is locked into that 8/9 game regardless of the outcomes of their game and Bonaventure's game saturday. The only thing that could change is dayton loses and the bonnies win then they would swap seed lines meaning dayton would have to play at Bonaventure in the first round. Am I correct?

Edit: I just realized that if dayton were to win saturday and UMass lose, then Dayton would move up to the 7 spot. That scenario does seem unlikely considering Fordham is destined to throw up a donut in conference play this year.

Speaking of the FRams, they are the first A-10 member to cement their Conference Tournament fate. I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't turn into a 5-peat also!

Yeah, I would bank on Dayton in that 8/9 spot. The question is whether they will be the 9 and have to start the tournament on an opponent's home floor.

I see the A10 put all the final games on Saturday, I suppose to give those teams that have to travel on Tuesday proper travel time.

For Outright A10 Honors
#1 Xavier @ #11 St. Louis - a win here gives us outright Champs (we already have tie breaker so not plating for seeding)
Failing that:
#10 LaSalle @ #2 Temple - an unlikely loss here would also give us outright A10 Honors.

Playing for the first round bye:
#4 Duq @ #3 Richmond - an -
#8 Dayton @ #5 GW

Duquense is 10 -5 and GW is 9-6. If Duq loses (likely, game is at Richmond) and GW wins (doesn't forget the 5 man rule, kicks UD while they are down) they would both be 10-6 - anybody know what the tiebreaker situation is between those two teams?)

Playing for an entry into the A10 Tournament
#12 St. Joe @ #13 Charlotte - suddenly this game is a PLAY IN GAME - St. Joe is 3-12, Charlotte is 2-13. A Charlotte win would give them identical 3-13 records. Again, have they met before or is this their first meeting this year. If it's first meeting it would also decide the tie breaker.

Then don't forget the whole 7-8 team seeding dance in the middle

Through 3/2 games

The winner of the Charlotte/St. joes game gets to keep playing. The winner will end up 12th and the loser will end up 13th.

As far as GW goes, I believe if they win and Duquesne loses than GW gets the 4 seed.

A St. Louis win could potentially put them in a home game in the first round. I would just be happy to see Dayton have to go on the road. I don't even want them to make it to AC.

Whats funny is the only two seeds that are locked in right now are #1 and #14.

Rhode Island (#6) is also only one game back from Duquesne and holds the tiebreaker too. So if Duquesne loses, and George Washington and Rhode Island both win, we have a 3-way tie for 4th place.

Rhode Island beat Duquesne
Duquesne beat George Washington
George Washington beat Rhode Island
So they're all 1-1 against each other

It next goes to performance against the highest common opponent. None of them beat Xavier (win!), and Duquesne is the only that beat Temple. So in this scenario, Duquesne gets the first round bye. Basically, if Duquesne loses, they get the first round bye if both Rhode Island and George Washington win. If only one of those two teams wins and Duquesne loses, that team gets a first round bye. If that team is Rhode Island, Duquesne falls to #5. If that team is George Washington, Duquesne also falls past Rhode Island to #6.

Along with the #1 seed, the #2 and #3 seed are also locked up by virtue of record and head-to-head. If Duquesne beats Richmond, they'll still be one game back after dropping three of their last four contests (two by a single point, ouch).

Temple is locked into #2 - they can't pass Xavier and Richmond can't pass the Owls.

How demoralizing it must be for ud to have a worse record than St. Bonaventure. (Cue the evil laughter! ;) )

I can't believe Dayton has to go to UMass twice in a season. The league office is patently unfair.
