Couldn't have happened to a bigger DB.

What did he do, get with Mick's girlfriend?

Lol. That pretty much locks up an NIT for them. Must have been pretty bad to make a decision that will result in a 25 point loss to Pitt.

Had to be big. Hell, UC doesn't even suspend people for felonies!

What a Joke--This is unreal, Mick is doing this for a couple of reasons- none of which are for what happened with Gates. 1st- He is doing it to put on a show for the Bearcat fans, UC is going to Pitt (where everyone knows with or without Gates they get killed) so its the perfect time to try and pull a stunt like this to say "im really trying here" 2- Its a built in excuse to lose to Pitt. Mick loves his excuses- just watch. After they lose he will pull the "Well we went in short handed blah blah blah"

I would be impressed if he keeps him out for 2-3 games though. I dont see it happening unless he realizes UC is down and out and needs something like this to point to as to why the collapse came yet again.

Yeah, Mick knows the February collapse is coming, time to throw Yancey under the bus again and accept none of the blame.

Are you telling me Yancy Gates wouldn't win the A-10?

February sweeps means one thing for television networks. It means something completely different for UC.

Are you telling me Yancy Gates wouldn't win the A-10?

He could, had he made the right choice of colleges coming out of high school. He could have gone to a school that would help mold him into a man, played for a coach that would mold him into an elite frontcourt player and a team that stacks wins by the dozens each year.

Instead, he is the lead circus clown being led around by a gnome that throws him under the bus every time something goes wrong.

Let's move the SucKS game to February.

And in typical Mick fashion, Mick threw Gates under the bus after the game. When asked about UC's offense, Mick said that the offense is actually better without Gates in the game (better screening, better ball movement etc.) and then took an additional shot at Gates when he said "We don't throw the ball into the low post without him (Gates) posting."

Nice things to say about arguably your best player, even if he has been suspended.

Per Cincy Enquirer....

Yancy Gates admits to mistakes (#1. enrolling @ uc)
but status still in doubt

Does anyone believe for a second that Gates won't play tonight?

DePaul is horrible. My thought is that Mick doesn't start him, hoping the team can pull ahead early and not need him to play, but if the game stays close he plays.

I am sure I am in the minority, but I applaud the way Mick handled this situation. He took their best player and sat him during one of their bigger games (whether you think they could have won or not). That takes cajones, especially since he knows his job is likely on the line this year.

Say what you want about Mick, but he has definitely been consistent that he is willing to keep values above talent: See Alvin Mitchell and Rashad Bishop.

That said, I don't think it was necessary to say some of the things he did say (mostly just the part about how the offense is better without Yancy)

For what its worth, I also think Yancy handled this well and said all the right things in the Enquirer article.

Yeah, YTG is sooo consistent:

Gates’ status for tonight, Cronin said, will be based on “how much I think he deserves to (play), when I think he deserves to.”

I agree to an extent. But doesn't it say something about Mick that he has these types of problems year after year?

This whole thing is completely nuts. UC is a joke.

I didn't realize that was going to be my 1,000th post. Good thing I stuck to my morals. UC is a joke is very fitting.

The whole program is a joke and intelligent UC fans know that. Mick makes poor decisions time and time again. Sure, he's probably to the point now where he's damned he suspends him and damned if he doesn't. Bottom line, he suspended him for a sure-fire loss on the road vs Pitt (they were going to get creamed regardless) and threatened to ban him for the Depaul game. Little did they know, they were going to need him. Now he's back <YAWN> and they may very well have won their last game of the season last night.

Did you hear his postgame show? Like all the others, it's nothing but a giant bitch-fest where he calls out his players one by one and name by name. It's sad. He learned it from the best at it, Bobby the Hutt. Compare Mick's postgame show to Mack's sometime. Miles apart.

You saved me the trouble of writing, because I agree word for word.

The other thing that bugs me is the use of "indefinite" to describe a 1 game suspension. Mick isn't the only on guilty of this, but seriously, if the offense Friday wasn't bad enough to warrant at least a two game suspension from the get-go, just call it a one game suspension. Suspend him again if you need to, but using "indefinite" to describe what is ultimately a one-game suspension lessens the impact of the word.

He may suspend him for the next game against a team they can't beat. It is indefinite. It comes and goes as the need for an excuse becomes necessary.

I fully agree with your post but this part really stuck out for me. The guy manages to bitch and whine in a way that would make you love any 14-year-old jersey shore princess. I don't know how and why this man has a job, but for him to throw players under the bus, not take credit for his role in it, then consistently do the throwing? That's absurd and he should be ashamed of his damn self.

I abhor everything about that spot on this great land but at a certain point I just feel a little bad for them. Pimp said it right though, the Intelligent fans over there know that it's a joke of a program, but they are in the minority apparently. Sucks a lot that the dude "in charge" of your team is an excuse maker.

It's ok though because I'll take the initiative and make an excuse for Mick: he sucks.
