Sad news today everyone; the White Stripes are no more: http://bit.ly/hiybo5
It is now one of my greatest regrets that I have never seen them live. They are one of my favorite bands and Jack White is a musical god. It is tough to see them go.
I like pretty much everything Jack White does. As long as he's still around, I'll be happy.

Very sad day.
I've seen them live twice (2002 in an embarrassingly empty venue, and 2003). That was back when they actually heavily toured America.
It sort of pissed me off how they ignored America for much of the rest of the decade. Instead they heavily toured Canada, South America, Europe. Meg's anxiety canceled an American tour. And a Jack White car accident canceled another tour.

Sorry, but I have to say "Who?".

Seven Nation Army is probably their most recognizable song (although I'm not a fan and get annoyed when I constantly hear it at college games):

My favorite album is De Stilj. This is a fun song:

This is the best song about the fall of the American auto industry I've ever heard:

The Stripes also have softer side. Great song writing. Universally regarded as a top 5 band of the decade.
I love the White Stripes, but I'm really not that distraught about this at all. Jack White is the White Stripes. I could replace Meg White on the drums yesterday, and I'm only a moderate drummer (drums are my 3rd or 4th instrument at best.) Standard, simple drum beats are all she uses, and it absolutely works for them, but by no means is she irreplaceable. As long as Jack White is playing music, I'll be happy (although he branches out so much now so I hope he still writes White Stripes-style music in the future.)
And if he is looking for another intermediate drummer, I'm absolutely available.

White Stripes were great, but with The Black Keys doing so well and the Ferocious Few on the upswing, the two person band was getting to be a crowded scene. Also, I thought Jack and his wife divorced. That could have something to do with it. BTW, I saw on TV a while back that Jack White actually took his wife's last name. Now there is a progressive guy. Either that or he hated his own last name.
Well, there is still Dead Weather and I heard they are soon coming out with a new CD. I saw them in concert and it was DYYYNOOOOOMIIITE!!

This should have happened around 2008. Not surprising.

Yeah, they divorced more than a decade ago. Publicly, they told the press they were brother and sister. Sort of weird stuff.
Both White and Meg remarried when the Stripes began to fall apart. Maybe that's not a coincidence.

Jack White is married to Karen Elson. As for the Dead Weather, they put out a new album last year and I don't believe anything is on the horizon. Jack is busy producing for and cultivating the Third Man label/brand.

Meg actually lived in Erlanger KY for more than a year after the band stopped. She was in a relationship with Patrick Keeler from The Greenhorns and The Raconteurs.

Well, there were only 2 in the entire band. No one will ever classify Meg as one of the great drummers of all time. I think Jack just felt sorry for her after they broke up personally and he kept the band going to give her a gig.
Anyway, the Jack White caravan will go on- in numerous other arrangements.
I hope the Raconteurs reunite and come up with something new in the future..

yeah, meg was definitely a crappy drummer. But White has done his best work with her (of course, that probably has nothing to do with meg).

Jack White is a genius. He knew exactly what what he was doing by using a crappy drummer. If you haven't seen "It Might Get Loud" I highly recommend it. Not only does Jack build an electric guitar out of a piece of wood, a coke bottle and one guitar string, but he also explains his philosophy of wanting it to be a challenge to play a guitar. While most guitarists play the best gear, Jack will use a plastic guitar he got from Montgomery Ward as a child. Really interesting stuff.
Maybe I just loved the movie because I play the guitar.

Exactly why I'm not losing sleep.

I agree that Jack knew what he was doing. He wanted that minimal beat, kind of dirty sound to compliment what he was doing. It was no mistake, I just wish he would've chosen me as his crappy drummer so I could be rich right now. Meg White certainly made it further than her talents would suggest she could. And as a guitarist I also really liked the It Might Get Loud. Jack White is a hell of a musician.

Snipe will see this as another example of the decline of the white man and plead for gov't intervention.

Yeah, the thing with Jack White is that less is more. His efforts outside of the Stripes are just over done.
White is best when the arrangment is super simple. I love this song (just him and a guitar and meg in the background):

I like Meg's playing better than the others he's played with.
I'd have her play drums in my band. I always hear people dissing her, but when I watch her play live, she's got really tasteful parts and doesn't get in the way.
Having played in a band with a Keith Moon wannabe (and actually really good at that) I can tell you her style is more genius than guff.

People used to say all the time that Ringo Starr was a crappy drummer- mainly because he refused to play any "look at me" drum solos. He didn't care for them.
Actually Ringo came up with a number of innovations as to drum sound- and if you would put a metronome next to him, he would be absolutely perfect.
I'm not so sure about Meg being underrated. I just think she is who she is- serviceable, but she's just wallpaper behind the great artwork that is Jack.
I know one thing. Jack White plays the neck of his guitar closest to the body than anyone I have ever seen- and stays there for extended periods. A lot of guys don't even try to go there.

The White Stripes have a ridiculous number of under appreciated gems like "effect and cause".
