Comment from a Dayton fan on UD Pride
"If the A10 were a solar system, X is the Sun and we are Pluto...plain and simple.
Watching X/Rich right now...guess what? X comes out in a zone and is going toe to toe with Rich...then they switch to a match up zone/man.
It's called coaching BG, I hope you are watching"

they were worried that if izzo went to the cavs that gregory was a shoe in for michigan state. this followed a time where they were worried boston college would hire him.
gregory is an adequate coach. baylor may have been sweating about losing scott drew or northern iowa may have been sweating about losing ben jacobson. dayton, however, could breathe easily IF keeping gregory was what they wanted to do. they were a team that made the nit most times, and the ncaa some times when he took it over. that's not great coaching. it is, perhaps, adequate coaching, though.
i don't know what took so long, but they're now beginnig to turn on him. dayton is easy to scout, and they don't appear to do a good job of scouting themselves. generally speaking, tennessee and butler both had good teams last year, but with very different make ups. if tennessee tried to play like butler does, it wouldn't work. in a sense, i think that's what dayton does much of hte time. they don't play to their strengths. they could be better, but they're not. a good coach would win more games with the personnel and resources that ud has. gregory doesn't do poorly, but he doesn't do well either. again, he is at best, adequate.
i believe he also recently got a big extension, so i guess ud feels he's good enough for them. far be it from me to disagree with them.

cheap thrills aren't the best thrills, but they are worth the price of admission. i guess something similiar can be said about guilty pleasures. i actually enjoy reading and posting on udpride. the mood has completely changed though. after three or four years i didn't think it ever would, but i guess after eight years, it finally has. ud fans, almost all of them, are actually acknowledging that the program is going nowhere fast.
this isn't an unusually bad year for them. i don't know why their attitude suddenly changed. i actually respect this attitude more. you can't get to where you want to go unless you first know where you are. having said that, the old attitude was far more entertaining. they always felt that they were on the brink of greatness.
when they lost, it was because they were unlucky, or because the other team was classless, or whatever.
when they didn't make the ncaas, no matter how much they missed it by, it was because the committee screwed them and not because they weren't actually good enough.
every year was going to be the yeary the eclipsed xavier and dominated the atlantic ten (despite being around 500 the majority of the time).
now, they're finally acknowledging that the only reason ud hasn't succeeded as much as other programs is because they've never been as good as those other programs. it's a very strange feeling to hear them say that. wow. i don't know how the administration feels, but if it's the same as the fans then it is slightly overdue. they did extend gregory until 2018 after last year's nit win. i guess that's a symptom of thinking they're on the brink of greatness, and the only reason they hadn't gotten there yet was because of bad luck.

Isn't it wonderful.
Now, if you are a real sadist, you may thoroughly enjoy the fact that they know where they stand now, but that they believe they get to stand there for 7 more years - the length of Gregory's remaining contract.
They see no out on that one, given that the buyout is too big for the school to swallow.
Truly, this is not a damn shame.

what is his buyout on ud's end??
generally speaking, when a coach gets a massive extension and a big buyout to boot, it's geared at other schools that may want to hire him away. the school that he's currently at wouldn't have to pay quite as much if they wanted to terminate the contract.
that's GENERALLY speaking, though. that may not be specifically speaking. generally speaking, teams with the kinds resources and emphasis on basketball that ud has are successful. specifically speaking, that isn't the case with ud, though. in fact many have done much more with much less.

UD fans are so much more fun when they actually think they are good. It is so much more entertaining when they hold onto the idea that they are/can be better than Xavier. Who wants UD fans to finally admit they arent any good? Than would make them sane, normal people. I like the crazy, delusional UD fans, they are so much more fun to talk/listen to.
