My wife and I are getting two dogs in the near future. In exchange for letting her name one of them Valentine (awful, IMO, but Valentine's day is her b-day so all things must revolve around that) she's letting me name the other something Xavier related.

So far she's approved of the above names. Which one do you guys think is best? Any other suggestions? Sound off.

If one's a female, call it Dayton.

What are the physical features of the dog, that could help with some names.

Personally, I like to name animals generic names like Chuck or Earl... but you didn't ask for my personal opinion. Of the choices given, I like Tu best.

I'm no Dr. Phil here Lucho but let me get this straight.. She gets the absolute right to name one of the dogs Valentine and then she provides you with a list of "approved names" for you to choose from? I think you know where I'm heading with this..

Anywho..I think Skip would be a good dog name and nice tribute to a great man.

I know, it's kinda effed up right? In all fairness she had picked some other god-awful names that I vetoed but when she arrived at Valentine she wouldn't budge so I obliged. I think I can get away with Skip too. Good choice.

First, hopefully you are getting dogs from the SPCA or a reputable rescue and not a breeder.

Second, what kind of dogs are you getting?

This seems like a very difficult name for a dog to carry around.
I'm trying to picture you on the back porch, calling for the mutt to come home.
"Here Valentine...come here girl."

Nope, just doesn't work.

Yup. They will both be rescues from reputable shelters in Chicago. They'll both be beagles as well. We're getting the first one (female) when we move in the next couple of weeks and the second one (male) a few months down the road once the first has been properly trained and housebroken.

I agree. I wasn't too thrilled about the idea either but she's working on some nicknames or shorter names for Valentine, and again, before she settled on that name there were some god-awful suggestions (mostly the names of Disney characters for some reason). Something two syllable, I've heard, is easiest for dogs to recognize.

Beagles are the best dogs!

I've read in several different puppy books that a dog's name should have at least two syllables because the dog is able to respond to that better - especially when being trained.

Edit: Just saw you already know the two syllable thing so never mind.

That's good. Validates my vote for Muskie over Tu or D'Artagnan. Since a dog will live for around 15 years, that will keep you from having to explain to the neighbors why you called your dog Crawdaddy.

I definitely think one syllable names are best. I would not, however, name him "Stay".

Romain Guessagba-Sato-Lebel Jr. It's more than two syllables but it's badass.

Otherwise, D'Artagnian is a powerful names for a male dog.

Or Mackdaddy.

I like Skip. But here are some others.

Guessagba

Jumpin' Jamal

Chalmers

T-Time

At least with the girl dog you can just call it Val - if the dog gets real fat you can just say you named it after Val Kilmer.

Had to vote for Muskie, as that is my dog's name. If you name him Muskie, get ready for people who don't know anything about Xavier to be completely baffled by that name. Some people think you named them after a fish, while others will think that you named them that because they smell.

I voted for Skip. Not a bad name for a dog. Not a bad nickname either. All nicknames starting with the letter S are superior if you ask me.

I grew up with three German Shepard's in succession and everyone of them was named Dragon. Dragon is a cool name for a big manly dog that could kill you, not so much for your little beagle. We liked the name and just kept it when we got a new one.

Always liked Nixon for dog. And you could also call him tricky dick. You could hold up his paw when he is a puppy and mimic "I am not a criminal". El Duce would also be a cool name for a dog, but people might think you are a fascist.

I would go with Skip. Skip Prosser Is The Jedi. What a great individual that helped set the table for all this good stuff. It still sucks that he is gone. He was a fine and decent man and one of my heros in life.

Mack is a good name for a dog.

IMHO, it's better than the given suggestions.

Go with Skip, and if you're worried about the two syllable thing call him Skipper. Just make sure to find a doggie bowl that can hold a pint.

I have brother/sister daschunds name Chief Wiggum and Ladybird.

In high school I had an old bloodhound I named John Chaney. He looked just like him.

As a child I had a great old mutt simply named Xavier.

Coming from the dog whisper himself, Dedrick Finn, I prefer Dana. 991 4 ever. I did however enjoy the movie My Dog Skip.

Of your list I like Skip, but I'll also throw out there "Posey". Sounds kind of nice to me. Great idea to name your dog after Xavier. Love it!
