Per Rush the Court.....

This idea has been batted around for some time now, but it looks like it’s going to come to fruition.

North Carolina and Michigan State are finalizing a deal to play each other next Veteran’s Day (November 11)
on an aircraft carrier in San Diego Harbor.

At first, we wondered why an eastern team and a midwestern team would travel so far to play when they have perfectly good aircraft carriers in their half of the country (Norfolk, Virginia, for example). And then we realized that the game will occur in November, and well, the game will be outside. San Diego’s rather predictable weather makes for a safer bet, and a deal should be announced soon for what will make for a rather interesting gimmick game.

Let’s just hope that they properly adjust for the wind coming in off the water.

Interesting... Predictable or not, the Pacific Ocean can be rather windy...

Looks like they'll have to pay special close attention to Channel 4 News with five-time Emmy award-winning anchor Ron Burgundy and T!ts McGee.

Have to hand it to them, that is different.

So now we play outdoor hockey in baseball diamonds.

We play basketball tournament games in Football Domes

We now play basketball on Aircraft Carriers?

Everybody's looking for the next big gimmick.

Can you imagine - 2nd half - 0:02.0 left on the clock - down 1. The other team commits a really dumb lame brain foul. Their coach is doing everything he can to keep his composure when all he really wants to do is run out on the court and give his player what for in words you can't use on a family show.

The team down 1 has their A#1 best free throw shooter heading to the line - this mythical player has a 99.44% free throw accuracy rate. The ref bounces the player the ball, he lines the shot up, he releases and just as the ball has 3 feet left to go, on a laser guided trajectory to the hole, I might add, a sudden gust of wind knocks the ball off coruse.

At which point its the big news on every sports talk show and forum, and you have at least one coach speaking out about how he will NEVER set foot on another aircraft carrier to play a game.

You think depth perception causes problems in places like Boardwalk Hall and domed stadiums, wait until you're out in the Pacific Ocean.

I think it's dumb.

That's the same thing I thought. I can barely shoot in anything bigger than a high school gym. But I also suck so it doesn't really make a difference.

Wait how far out in the ocean is this carrier going to go before the game starts?

What's next, a submarine?? When I learned Notre Dame and Navy were facing each other in Ireland in football, I remember joking that their next move would be to meet on an air craft carrier. Well, looks like the Heels and Spartans beat them to it.

This sounds awesome to me. Good for them.

I would imagine that the aircraft carrier has a better court on it than some of these pre-season tournaments. Wasn't it UC that played in what looked like a conference center a couple years ago?

That is in Cancun.

This story came out a while ago, but I never did hear if it is being held on the deck or in a hanger. I have to imagine it is in the hanger, but it would be so much cooler if it was on the deck. However, if it was on the deck it would be hard to count that game towards the stats since elements, such as wind, would make the game very different then playing in a gym.

How often have you played outside when wind affects your passing and shooting?

Probably not much.

Not passing- but easily shooting. At least 50% of the time wind would play a factor when playing outside for shooting. (And, if it is on an aircraft carrier- it more then likely would be on water Id imagine- you would see some wind from that IMO)

I think it would be cool to do it outside as an exhibition game.

That is in Cancun.

The Cancun tournament is in a ball room. They literally lay the floor down and move in a few bleechers into the middle of a ball room. there is a chandelier that hangs down above midcourt where the center scoreboard usually is.

Cincinnati did play in Las Vegas one year at a place where the court wasn't even regulation size. Whether or not it was at a conference center, I don't know. Either way it was obsurd.
