OK...odd question...but it's making me paranoid (not really, but whatever):

I have noticed over the last couple of years while driving that street lights very often "turn off" as I am approaching them. It has happened enough that it cannot be a simple coincidence. Since I'm driving by I can't tell if they turn back on, but find it very odd that this continually happens as I drive at night.

Has anyone else noticed this...and if they have...why in the hell does this happen? Is there some type of sensor that turns them off for speeding, or are they recording, or taking pictures or something (seems it would make more sense for the light to be on if they were recording or taking pictures)? It really has me scratching my head.

Discuss.

There is a sensor on each streetlight that turns it off when it's light out. My neighbor uses a laser pointer to turn off the light near his house on halloween. It's possible something on your car is very highly reflective and is triggering that sensor. Or your headlight is pointed the wrong way.

It's also possible I'm talking out of my ass.

There is a time delay on those lights to prevent them from turning off from passing headlights but they need to be adjusted.

I've noticed that manyof the street lights in my part of town (Mt. Lookout) are motion activated. At least they act like they are.

They will be off, and then turn on as I approach them, only to turn off again a few minutes after I pass.

Maybe it's a "green initiative" from the city?

I've noticed that the gas lights on my street are on all the freaking time. It's somewhat of a surprise to me that nobody has invented a retrofit valve that would make gas lights light sensitive.
