It's OBVIOUSLY an NCAA violation to give unused basketball shoes to soldiers. DUH!

So does this mean the NCAA is with the Taliban? That explains so much.

Drop their athletics down to D-III...I was shocked that they thought this was ok.

The NCAA will surely give Dookcane the death penalty for this.

If it were Kentucky, they would be given a commendation.

Note to road trip guys... be careful if you are planning on sending used snuggies to the troops. Check with the NCAA first. on booster rules.

I know most of the posts were in jest, but just in case anyone doesn't read the article and just takes the posts for their information, Duquesne is not in trouble for giving gear to soldiers. They are being reported for giving the gear to a JUCO Basketball coach, who is giving it to soldiers. It is illegal to give gear to coaches of JUCO programs, hence the minor violation.

This is the reason the NCAA is held in such low esteem by the general public.
It's ridiculous situations like this that encourage cheating

after reading the article in this link, something definitely smells kinda funny....

they are sending fifteen pairs of shoes to soldiers. of the fifteen pairs, the sizes were two 15s, four 14s, two 13s, three 12s, two 11s and two 10s.

ummmmm........yeah.

they are sending these via a community college. that college has fourteen players on the roster, and if you look at that team's roster, it breaks down quite nicely.

coincidence?? perhaps. i am curious as to how duquesne decided that fifteen pairs was the right number to send, and as to how the sizes broke down the way that they did (how many soldiers are wearing size 14 shoes??), and why they shipped them to the community college where if you look at everyone's height, it appears to have approxomiately five or six players that would wear a size fourteen or fifteen shoe.

if this was really for a shoe drive, i wouldn't think they'd be concerned about the number of pairs, much less the specific sizes of the pairs that were being donated.

it certainly isn't unreasonable to at least suspect (if not accuse) that those shoes were not for the soldiers.

....not to mention, they wouldn' reimburse the manager who paid for this out of his own pocket.

It definitely does seem quite fishy when you break it down like that, although I have three soldiers as close friends and two of them are 14s! Obviously that means nothing but just found it funny. It could be true that this was a ruse, but what would they gain from that? They may be recruiting one or two kids (have no idea if they are recruiting any) but would you buy a whole team shoes just to impress one kid slightly?

Also, your last point hits the nail on the head. Just give the kid his money back and none of this happens. That part is pretty scummy, not willing to reimburse the manager.

I doubt the men's basketball team had 15 pairs of size 8's sitting around. :logo:

Also a very good point. But didn't the manager buy them out of pocket? If that is the case I am not sure it would matter. I could be wrong but I thought the violation was because they didn't reimburse the manager therefore it was a gift from the school.
