This really was no contest from the beginning. Xavier jumped out to a 10-0 lead, and while Bellarmine hung around for a while (mainly due to our poor shooting), X pulled away thanks to Ta'Shia and Katie.
The starting lineup was:
F Amber Harris
C Ta'Shia Phillips
G Tyeasha Moss
G Special Jennings
G Katie Rutan
This is what I suspected might be the lineup a few months ago, and from what I saw, it appears to be the right decision.
The position in which players came off the bench:
1. Lynette Holmes
2. Megan Askew
3. Shatyra Hawkes
4. Sabrina Johnson
5. Amber Gray
6. Ashley Wanninger
7. Latisha Walker
My thoughts:
Harris-- Amber was Amber. Took some good jump shots in the first half, grabbed rebounds and did a little bit of everything. Shot needs to be a little more consistent as she missed all of her 3 point attempts. 4 steals also.
Phillips -- Ta'Shia is just amazing. She had 10 rebounds 7 minutes into the game. She makes it seem so effortless. It is amazing how bad she can make opponents look. Had several offensive rebounds and stickbacks. 19 pts and 23 boards. What more needs to be said? She appears to be in excellent shape as well.
Moss -- Didn't shoot particularly well, but did a little bit of everything else. Needs to be more consistent from 3. 4 assists and no turnovers is good.
Special -- Didn't have a good day scoring, but I know she'll be ready once the season starts.
Rutan -- Katie sure doesn't shy away from shooting the ball. Missed her first few 3 point attempts, but then started hitting. Bottom line is if she hits threes, X is a tough team to beat. Had a good day defensively also with 4 steals.
Holmes -- I think I'm really going to like Lynette. She's a real high energy-type player that gets after it. Rebounds, loose balls, driving to the basket and drawing fouls. She reminds me of former men's player James Posey. Needs to work on her shooting and FT's, but the potential that she had is very obvious.
Askew -- Megan is another high energy player and if today is any indication, she will have a bigger role this year. She took some jump shots, made a few, and grabbed a lot of rebounds. I'm hoping she has a good senior season. I met her a week ago and she's a really nice and funny person.
Hawkes -- Shatyra is a very quick point guard that drove to the basket, took a three point attempt, and really looked good outside of a couple of turnovers. She will make a good backup to Special this season.
Johnson -- Sabrina was very aggressive going after loose balls and grabbing rebounds. She had a putback and will be the primary backup to Harris and Phillips.
Gray -- Amber received a big round of applause when she came onto the court. When McGuff first put her in, she struggled a bit trying to keep up, and was removed after a couple minutes. She looked a lot better in the 2nd half. She still has a ways to go to be the player that she once was -- she is a work in progress and it's great to see her on the court.
Wanninger -- Ashley came in and looked pretty good. She had a couple turnovers, but also hit a couple threes as well. She played about 7 minutes or so. Probably won't see much time this year.
Walker -- Only got a few minutes and made a basket. She was the last person off the bench, so I'm guessing we won't see her too much during the season.
Overall, it was a very good game by X. Bellarmine was clearly overmatched, but this is the first time in the McGuff era that I thought that every member of a recruiting class could contribute something. That's what I got out of today's game. Looking forward to the season opener against South Carolina. Go X!
