Mick Cronin, Cincinnati: He took over a program in shambles in 2006 and has led it back to where it’s competitive (they went to the NIT last season) but has yet to lead the Bearcats to the NCAA tournament. This is Cronin’s fifth season (61-68 overall), and Cincinnati has yet to finish better than 10th in the Big East.

Karl Hobbs, George Washington: To think that a few years ago Hobbs was considered one of the hottest up-and-coming coaches in the country. That was just back in 2007 following three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. However, the Colonials have had three straight sub-par seasons with a 35-50 overall record, and Hobbs has some pressure to win this year.

Keno Davis, Providence: This may be premature, but a combination of off-the-court issues and a 12-19 mark last season has Davis needing to get things going. This is only his third season, but he needs to get moving in the right direction or else the Friar faithful will start to lose its patience.
Remember when this guy was the Brad Stevens of the coaching carousel?

Couldn't happen to a couple nicer guys than Karl Hobbs and Mick Cronin.

being on the hot seat can't be all that bad. if you win, you're retained. if you lose, you're bought out and essentially paid not to work.

Another case of a guy who had it going at Drake, then decides to take a crappy job in a big conference at Providence.
He may wind up at College of Charleston wondering what the hell happened.

Well, it is a solid-sized paycheck for a couple of years. The worst that happens is that he goes back to a job similar to the one that he left. I don't think anyone was predicting Drake to turn into the next Xavier, Butler or Gonzaga.
But yeah, lower-tier BCS jobs aren't good jobs, other than the paycheck.

Mick Cronin, Cincinnati
But Mick Cronin still needs a telephone book to sit in the hot seat.

Is this what it looks like when Mick Cronin is on the hot seat?

college of charleston isn't THAT terrible of a job. nice city. nice facilities. decent fan and alumni support, and at least SOME history to speak of. they should have a fairly strong team this year with four starters returning. in most years, cofc is probably a step up from drake.

While I agree, isn't Hobbs an example of the opposite? I can not remember if he received much in terms of offers, but he was quite the hot topic as a coach, but a couple bad seasons has essentially eliminated him from the coaching scene. As someone else said, at least if Davis is fired he ends up where he started, if Hobbs is fired where does he go?
Just goes to show, it is not just about the conference or size of the school either big or small, it is all about the situation. Leaving Drake for a school with better potential could have been huge for Davis, but Providence was not the right choice. Likewise, staying at a school like Xavier would be beneficial, but Hobbs staying at George Washington clearly was not the right choice (again, if he had any better choices).

If I'm not mistaken, there was a newspaper report of academic shenanigans going on at GW just before the NCAA Tournament that season. They have been in a freefall since then; they've only made it as far as Atlantic City once in the last 3 seasons.

At least he cashed in on one good season at Drake. Providence always seems to be hit and miss as far as coaches go (Dave Gavitt, Rick Pitino, and Pete Gillen were good, Rick Barnes was so-so, everyone else struggled).

A quick internet search shows that Hobbs was a candidate for St. John's, Providence and Cincinnati at one point. Obviously, none of those jobs were no brainer type places to jump to and we don't know if he was even offered the jobs.

Karl Hobbes may have been (MAY) an even worse candidate for UC than Mick.
