TOP ASSISTANTS RUNDOWN; ATLANTIC-10

Thus far we’ve run through the ACC, America East, Atlantic Sun and Ohio Valley. Now it’s time to look at the top assistants in the A-10 – as voted upon by at least 75 percent of the coaches in the league:

1) Billy Schmidt, Dayton – Began his coaching career as an assistant to Steve Smith at Oak Hill Academy and has worked for Kevin O’Neill at Northwestern and Tennessee and Tommy Amaker at Seton Hall and Michigan. Schmidt has been with Brian Gregory since he got the Dayton job.

``It’s his passion for every aspect of the job that makes him great. There’s nothing in the description of a basketball coach that he doesn’t excel at. He’s turned into a dynamic recruiter and has learned X’s and O’s from some of the best, so the coaching aspect was already solidified. He’s also unbelievable with our guys. I trust him immensely in being able to get through to them and motivate them – and the guys believe in him.”
– Dayton coach Brian Gregory

2) Pat Kelsey, Xavier*****

3) David Duke, Temple

4) Porter Moser, St. Louis

5) Kevin Clark, Rhode Island

I wonder if Schmidt was the guy who recruited Jimmie Binnie. But I'm sure he was the architect behing the Fab 5. I'm a little surpised they didn't mention that.

Hey, Jimmie Binnie was a major upgrade from what they had before him.

Based on what Gregory said, it seems like maybe Billy Schmidt should be UD's head coach!

"Schmidt has been with Brian Gregory since he got the Dayton job."

Right there disqualifies him from any type of honors.

That "dynamic recruiter" came up with the Kurt Hueslman and Sean Finn gems.

It's the pre-season so it's no wonder a dayton assistant got top honors.
I was thinking the same thing about this guy should be the dayton head coach.

To be a dynamic recruiter, I thought you actually had to get dynamic recruits...

More so, for a coaching staff to be acknowledged as successful, wouldn't you need post-season success in the NCAA tourny? I mean, sure, they won a game a couple of years ago, but let's be honest... NO A-10 titles. ONE trip to the dance. NIT Championship after making it to the second round of the dance WHEN returning 7 seniors. Yea...sorry, this coaching staff is a bust. Hence why I love them almost as much as those lunatics up north do. Brian Gregory forever!

I have never seen a program accomplish so little in such a large amount of time

David Duke should maybe consider a name change.

This is exactly right. You can't be a "premiere" assistant at the same program for over 6-7 years. It makes no sense. If you were good at your job, you would be gone already by that timeframe.

I HATE dayton.

He is so awesome, he has won zero championships and hasn't moved on.

Sums up Dayton perfectly.
